2006 NBA draft rewind: Sixers trade for Rodney Carney on draft night

We rewind the clocks back to 2006 when the Philadelphia 76ers acquired Rodney Carney on draft night.

The Philadelphia 76ers wrapped up a disappointing 2005-06 season. Their big acquisition, Chris Webber, at the deadline of the previous season did not mesh with superstar Allen Iverson. Consequently, the Sixers finished 38-44 and missed the playoffs.

The Sixers entered the 2006 NBA draft with the 13th pick, and they selected defensive swingman, Thabo Sefolosha out of Switzerland, and immediately sent him to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for the 16th pick.

That pick became Rodney Carney who was a big athlete at the University of Memphis. He started 35 games during his rookie season in Philadelphia, but he never really found his footing, and he was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2008 offseason. He averaged 6.2 points and shot 43.4% from the floor in his two seasons with Philadelphia.

In that trade, the Sixers received a second-round pick from the Timberwolves, but they never got it since it was top 55 protected. The deal was essentially a salary dump to create room to sign Elton Brand that summer.

After a season in Minnesota, Carney came back to Philadelphia as a free agent and he averaged 4.7 points and shot 40.1% from the floor. He spent his final NBA season, 2010-11, with the Golden State Warriors and the Memphis Grizzlies.

Draft Rewind: Sixers make a trade for Memphis’ Rodney Carney in 2006

We look back at the 2006 NBA draft when the Philadelphia 76ers traded for Rodney Carney.

[jwplayer mRu6rMVb-z6KDnl0B]

The Philadelphia 76ers entered the 2006 NBA Draft after a very disheartening 2005-06 season. The first full season of the Allen Iverson and Chris Webber duo did not turn out the way the team expected and they were back in the lottery following a playoff appearance in 2005.

They selected a good defender in the form of Thabo Sefolosha with the 13th pick, but the team then flipped him to the Chicago Bulls for the 16th pick which turned out to be Rodney Carney of Memphis.

Carney had a good career with Memphis averaging 14.3 points throughout his four seasons there and he finished up his senior season averaging 17.2 points and 4.3 rebounds while shooting 39.1% from deep. The hope was that he would provide some good play next to Iverson and Webber, but the team then traded Iverson and waived Webber so that was that.

He did average 6.6 points and 1.9 rebounds while shooting 34.7% from deep as a rookie.

He was then traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2008 before going back to Philadelphia in 2009 and then finishing up with the Golden State Warriors and the Memphis Grizzlies in 2011. He tried to make the rosters of the Miami Heat and New Orleans Pelicans later on, but he could not impress them. [lawrence-related id=38065,38046,38061]
