Rockets at Trail Blazers picks and predictions

Prediction

Rockets 119, Trail Blazers 111

Moneyline

In a Jan. 24 meeting, the Blazers won 137-131 in overtime in Houston as 10-point underdogs, 1 of their only 8 road wins this season.

Since then, the Blazers are 4-13. In their last 13 games, their only wins have come against the 22-41 Memphis Grizzlies.

The Rockets (-225) have only 6 road wins all season, tied for the 2nd-fewest in the league. They won their last road game but had lost 9 straight before that.

Portland only has 9 home wins and has dropped its last 8 games at Moda Center.

There is no good bet here. You can’t trust the Rockets on the road, and the odds aren’t worth the action anyway, while the Blazers are a bad moneyline bet at home.

PASS.

Against the spread

The Rockets have covered the spread in their last 4 games and are 33-28-1 ATS overall this season. They are, though, 12-18 ATS on the road.

The Blazers, who are 12-18 ATS at home this season, have covered in 4 straight overall after an 0-7 ATS skid. Twelve of their last 13 losses have been by 6 or more points.

The Rockets are 2-2 ATS when favored on the road.

BET ROCKETS -5.5 (-115).

Over/Under

The Rockets have scored 114 or more points in 3 straight games. Both teams have averaged 116 points per game over their last 3. The Blazers have allowed 119 and 128 points in their last 2 games.

BET OVER 218.5 (-105).

Houston Rockets at Portland Trail Blazers odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Houston Rockets at Portland Trail Blazers odds and lines, with NBA expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Houston Rockets (19-55) and Portland Trail Blazers (27-46) face each other Saturday for the second night in a row as the Rockets wrap up a three-game road trip and Portland continues a five-game homestand. Tip-off is 10 p.m. ET at Moda Center. Below, we look at the Rockets vs. Trail Blazers odds and lines, and make our expert NBA picks, predictions and bets.

The Rockets won Friday’s matchup 125-106. They have won two of their last three games but that’s their only two victories in their last eight contests. Houston has the fewest wins in the NBA and, even with their win Friday, are tied for the fewest road wins in the league with only eight.

The Trail Blazers have lost two straight games and have won only twice in their last 14 games. They are 17-20 at home this season and are still in contention for a play-in spot despite being 19 games under .500. Portland trails the 10th-place Los Angeles Lakers by four games with nine games left in the regular season.

Rockets at Trail Blazers odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Trail Blazers 118, Rockets 114

Money line

This is a tough pick because both teams are struggling. The Blazers have been losing and losing big. The Rockets are 4-19 in their last 23 games, although they have won two of their last three.

The Rockets have not won consecutive games since Jan 16 and 19 and I personally don’t like betting on struggling teams to win two consecutive games over the same opponent.

Despite their struggles, Take the TRAIL BLAZERS (+145).

Against the spread

The Rockets have covered the spread in four of their last 10 games and have alternated covering and failing to cover the spread in their last six games. They are 16-21 ATS on the road this season.

The Blazers are 16-20-1 ATS at home this season. They are 4-6 ATS over their last 10 games but have failed to cover the spread in three of their last four games.

Then of Portland’s last 12 losses have been by at least 19 points.

However, I like the Blazers to win outright because I don’t trust the Rockets to win two games in a row. If you want to give yourself a few points of insurance you can take the TRAIL BLAZERS +4.5 (-115).

Over/Under

The Blazers scored 127 and 119 points in their two victories across their last 14 games.

The Rockets allow the most points in the NBA this season, giving up 117.9 per game. The Trail Blazers allow the fifth-most points in the league at 114.0 allowed per game.

Two of the three games between the two teams this season have had 230 or more points scored.

Take OVER 231.5 (-108).

Rockets at Trail Blazers: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Trail Blazers 124, Rockets 105

Money line (ML)

The Trail Blazers (-1400) are overwhelming favorites, and they will cost you 14 times your potential return. That’s ridiculous, and a terrible betting strategy.

PASS.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The TRAIL BLAZERS -15 (-110) are worth a small-unit play even with a big number on the board.

The Rockets +15 (-110) are 5-1 ATS across the past six games on the road, but they’re 13-27 ATS across the past 40 as an underdog.

In addition, Portland is 4-1 ATS in the past five against Houston, and 6-1 ATS in the previous seven battles with the Rockets at Moda Center.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 237.5 (-105) is the lean here. The Under has cashed in eight of the last 10 meetings in this series.

The Under is also 4-1 in Portland’s past five at home, and 8-2 in the past 10 as a home favorite for the Blazers.

While the Over has hit in four in a row for the Rockets, the Under is 4-0 in Houston’s past four against teams with a winning overall record.

Rockets at Trail Blazers: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Trail Blazers 124, Rockets 113

Money line (ML)

PASS. Given its situation, there’s no way I’d take Houston to pull off an upset and it’s not a profitable strategy betting huge NBA regular-season favorites on the money line.

Against the spread (ATS)

What should be an exciting Western Conference primetime game pitting two playoff contenders with perennial All-Star guards has been marred by COVID-19 protocols.

Houston had its opening night home game vs. the Oklahoma City Thunder postponed because the Rockets didn’t have a minimum of eight active players due to positive COVID-19 tests and contact tracing.

The Trail Blazers got boat raced in their first game 120-100 at home by the Utah Jazz. Portland’s biggest deficit was 31 points, and the Trail Blazers hit seven fewer 3-pointers and were outrebounded 65-49. PG Damian Lillard struggled to get going, scoring just nine points on 4-of-12 shooting and made just 1 of 7 3-point attempts.

It’s tough putting any stock in previous Rockets-Trail Blazers meetings since Houston moved on from former head coach Mike D’Antoni to Stephen Silas. Say what you will about D’Antoni never winning an NBA title, the Rockets won the Southwest Division three of four seasons under D’Antoni and finished at least 16 games above-.500 each season.

The Rockets will take a step back in 2020-21 and, without several of their key players Saturday, will start the season off on a losing note. Take TRAIL BLAZERS -7.5 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

The recent total trends in Rockets-Trail Blazers games are bringing the total down. Seven of their previous eight meetings have gone Under the total. Trail Blazers home games are typically high scoring. Portland has gone Over the total in four of its last five as a home favorite and is 36-27-1 O/U as a home favorite since 2018.

I just “lean” OVER 225.5 (-110) only because we have no idea what kind of Houston team we are getting with just nine players available and a new head coach.
