Rockets at Hornets picks and predictions

Prediction

Rockets 117, Hornets 108

Moneyline

PASS.

There is minimal value on the Rockets (-250) to beat a Charlotte team that is battling injuries and is 7-21 this season.

Against the spread

BET ROCKETS -6.5 (-110).

The Rockets have won 4 of their last 5 games, and 2 of the victories were by 11 or more points.

The Hornets have lost 12 of their last 13 games, with their last 6 losses coming by 9 or more points. Charlotte has failed to cover the spread in 3 of its last 4 games and 6 of its last 8.

Over/Under

BET OVER 220.5 (-110).

The Rockets have hit the Over in 7 of their last 10 games, including 2 straight. They have scored 114 or more points in 3 of their last 5 games and 6 of their last 10.

The Hornets have hit the Over in 2 of their last 3 games. They have scored 108 or more points in 3 of their last 5 games while allowing 121 or more in 2 of their last 3.

Houston Rockets at Charlotte Hornets odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s Houston Rockets at Charlotte Hornets odds and lines, with NBA expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Houston Rockets (10-23) travel to Spectrum Center Monday to take on the Charlotte Hornets (17-17). Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Rockets vs. Hornets odds and lines, and make our expert NBA picks, predictions and bets.

After starting the season 1-16 the Rockets found their groove and won seven outings in a row. However, Houston has won just two of its last nine games since that win streak.

Houston is led by C Christian Wood and has become a viable opponent despite having the league’s fourth-worst net rating. The Rockets are 16-16-1 against the spread (ATS) this season and 8-9-1 ATS as road underdogs.

The Hornets will be without F Miles Bridges Monday, but G LaMelo Ball and G Terry Rozier are both back in action.

Charlotte is one of just a handful of teams that it has been profitable to bet on every game. The Hornets are 20-14 ATS and are .500 despite having a negative net rating (minus-1.5). They’re 2-1 ATS as home favorites.

Rockets at Hornets odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Hornets 124, Rockets 116

Money line

PASS on the money line.

The Rockets have been good enough without their starting backcourt to make betting the Hornets (-270) not a smart move. However, I’d also stay away from predicting the upset with Houston’s 3-7 record over its last 10 games.

Against the spread

BET on the HORNETS -6.5 (-105). This is both a bet on the Hornets and a fade on the Rockets.

Houston has lost three straight to potential playoff teams, dropping games to the Chicago Bulls by 15 points, the Milwaukee Bucks by 20 and the Indiana Pacers by 12. The Hornets are just as dangerous as the Pacers and should prove that.

The Hornets are just 2-3 in their last 5 games, but a couple of those losses came to the Utah Jazz and Phoenix Suns. The Hornets should be coming in confident after outscoring the Denver Nuggets by 25 in the final quarter to win by 8 points in their last game Thursday.

I’d side with Charlotte given each teams’ current form. Also, the Hornets are the ninth-best shooting team in the league, so they’ve been consistently better this season.

Lastly, the Hornets have the second-best turnover rate and the Rockets have the league’s worst. I’d rather back fewer turnovers, especially when dealing with a team like Charlotte.

Over/Under

BET on the OVER 235.5 (-112) as betting the Under here is asking for trouble. Both teams have awful defenses while both also rank in the top five in pace and play to each others’ weaknesses.

The ultra-young Houston backcourt may again be sidelined again, allowing free reign for Ball and Rozier. Similarly, Charlotte doesn’t have much size up front to deal with Wood.

I’d rather side with the Over when combining the teams’ strengths along with the pace at which this game should be played.

Rockets at Hornets: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Rockets 106, Hornets 109

Money line (ML)

These are two evenly matched teams and so it should be a close game throughout the night. The Rockets not having Wall, Wood and Gordon hurts their offense and will likely keep them below their season average of 111.0 points per game.

Without those three players, they’ll have a hard time winning on the road, where they’re 6-6 this season. SG Victor Oladipo will have to do much of the heavy lifting against the PG LaMelo Ball-led Hornets, who has sparked Charlotte this season.

I’d rather pass on the money line and bet on the spread instead, but if you like even money, take the HORNETS (+100) to win by a hair.

Against the spread (ATS)

Here’s where I’d put my money, along with the Under. The Hornets are 4-1-1 ATS in their last six games and taking the points in what should be a tight game should work in your favor. After all, the Hornets are playing well and capable of winning outright despite being slight underdogs.

Charlotte is 6-6-1 ATS at home this season and has gone 4-2 SU in its last six games, which includes a 4-1-1 ATS record.

Take the HORNETS to cover.

Over/Under (O/U)

The total has only gone Over in three of the Rockets’ last 10 games, though Charlotte has a 6-3-1 O/U record in its last 10 games. The absence of Gordon will hurt Houston’s perimeter offense, and Wall being out is another blow – thus leading to a slightly lower scoring output.

I like the UNDER 219.5 (-110) in this one.
