Ravens work out three defensive backs, sign two to practice squad

The Ravens worked out three defensive backs and signed two to their practice squad

The Baltimore Ravens have seen their defensive back room be decimated by injuries well before the 2021 season began. They lost cornerbacks Marcus Peters and Khalil Dorsey for the season, and have since seen other players in their secondary go down throughout the year and miss time such as safety Deshon Elliott and cornerback Jimmy Smith.

On Wednesday, the team worked out three defensive backs in Blake Countess, Robert Jackson and Isaiah Johnson. They signed both Countess and Jackson to their practice squad, while moving kicker Jake Verity to the practice squad/injured list. They had one open spot on their practice squad before the moves.

Countess has spent time with three teams ever since his NFL career started back in 2016 and has accumulated 57 total tackles, two interceptions and one sack. He was taken by the Philadelphia Eagles in the sixth round of the 2016 draft.

Jackson went undrafted in 2018, and signed with the Indianapolis Colts. He’s appeared in 16 NFL games (all with the Cleveland Browns), and has nine total tackles in his career.

Johnson started 14 games for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2020, putting up 15 total tackles and four passes defended.

Browns re-sign CB Robert Jackson

Jackson is back in Cleveland

The Cleveland Browns couldn’t quit the Robert Jackson business. Less than 10 days after releasing the young cornerback, the Browns have re-signed Jackson to a one-year contract.

Jackson’s return to the Browns was not unexpected. He has spent almost all of the last three years in Cleveland after being signed to the practice squad in the early part of the 2018 season. The undrafted free agent from UNLV has played sparingly and primarily on special teams until the end of the 2020 season.

Thanks to injuries and COVID-19 problems, Jackson was thrust into the starting lineup for Week 17 and the wild-card round game, both wins over the Pittsburgh Steelers. He didn’t play particularly well but showed enough against Pittsburgh’s aerial assault to merit a longer look from the Browns.

Browns waive CB Robert Jackson

Jackson was thrust into the starting lineup in Week 17 and the Browns’ wild-card win over Pittsburgh

The Cleveland Browns have placed cornerback Robert Jackson on waivers in a roster move. Jackson appeared on the NFL’s transaction wire on Thursday.

Signed following the 2019 NFL draft as a free agent from UNLV, Jackson bounced between the practice squad and active roster with the Browns. Jackson played sparingly over his two seasons with the Browns until thrust into a starting role in Cleveland’s Week 17 matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the wild-card round playoff win the following week.

If Jackson goes unclaimed on Friday, he will be free to sign with any team before the NFL’s official free agency kicks off in March.

Browns place OL Michael Dunn, CB Robert Jackson on injured reserve

The Browns also placed A.J. Green on the practice squad I.R.

Two players who acquitted themselves nicely when pressed into emergency duty for the Browns are now done for the year. Offensive lineman Michael Dunn and cornerback Robert Jackson were each placed on the team’s injured reserve on Tuesday.

Dunn suffered a calf injury while filling in for Joel Bitonio as the team’s starting left guard in the Browns’ wild-card win over the Steelers. Jackson injured his hamstring in the game. Both players are now done for the season, with the minimum I.R. time of three games carrying through the end of the playoffs.

With Bitonio due back from his COVID-19 absence, the loss of Dunn should be mitigated. Denzel Ward could also return to the Browns after missing the last two weeks with COVID-19, too. Jackson had seen a major increase in playing time in Ward’s absence.

The Browns also placed CB A.J. Green on the practice squad injured reserve. Green played in the Steelers contest as a practice squad elevation. To replace Green, the Browns brought back CB Donovan Olumba to the practice squad. Olumba was on the Browns during the 2020 offseason after signing with the team from the Cowboys.

CB Robert Jackson signed from Browns’ practice squad

Jackson has bounced between the Browns’ active roster and practice squad since 2018

Faced with an opening on the active roster with CB Greedy Williams going on injured reserve, the Cleveland Browns chose to promote from within. The Browns signed cornerback Robert Jackson off the team’s practice squad and to the active 53-man roster on Wednesday.

Jackson has seen this movie before. The follically gifted CB bounced between the Browns’ active roster and practice squad in 2019 and has been with the team for the last two seasons in some capacity.

The move bolsters the CB depth on the active roster. It also leaves an opening on the practice squad. With QB Garrett Gilbert now gone, the Browns still have just two quarterbacks on the roster, Baker Mayfield and Case Keenum.

Browns elevate CB Robert Jackson to the active roster

Jackson is the first player around the NFL to get the practice squad elevation

Robert Jackson is the answer to what might someday be an NFL trivia question. Jackson is the first-ever practice squad player promoted to the active roster under the new CBA rules.

Jackson, a third-year cornerback, is on the Browns practice squad. But due to injuries at the position, the Browns have taken advantage of the new rule wrinkle to promote Jackson to the active roster for a game weekend. It’s part of the change allowing 55 active players for each game day, up from 53. The teams can elevate one or two players from its practice squad before 4 p.m. ET the day before a game.

Jackson will revert back to the practice squad following the game. The Browns need him to help fill in for inured Greedy Williams, Kevin Johnson and M.J. Stewart at cornerback. Williams and Johnson have been ruled out for the Week 1 trip to Baltimore, while Stewart is questionable.

Jackson was the first player officially designated with the new practice squad elevation around the league. He played in six games for the Browns a year ago, almost exclusively on special teams.
