Clemson signed 21 players as part of its 2022 recruiting class, some of whom still have yet to make it to campus.

Nine signees went through spring practice as early enrollees while the rest, including transfer Hunter Johnson, will arrive on campus this summer. The Clemson Insider is taking a closer look at each newcomer and the likelihood of him contributing immediately this fall based on development and positional need.

TCI previously highlighted Keith Adams Jr., T.J. Dudley and Sherrod Covil Jr. Next up is Robert Gunn III.

Position: Kicker

Height: 6-foot-2

Weight: 175 pounds

Ranking: 3 stars (247Sports Composite)

Previous school: Pinellas Park (Florida) High

Early enrollee? Yes

The skinny: One of two specialists in Clemson’s 2022 signing class, Gunn possesses a powerful leg that plenty of schools around the country pursued before he ultimately chose Dabo Swinney’s program. Gunn, who made a 57-yard field goal in high school, was ranked the nation’s No. 8 kicking prospect in the 247Sports Composite. He handled kicking and punting duties in high school but was recruited as a kicker by the Tigers.

Gunn didn’t get a chance to participate much this spring. He was largely a spectator as he continues to work his way back to full strength after tearing the ACL in his kicking leg during his final high school season. He’s also joining a position group that includes one of the ACC’s best placekickers in veteran B.T. Potter, so contributing as a true freshman this fall was going to be a longshot for Gunn from the start barring injury. But a healthy Gunn could very well be the heir apparent to Potter, who’s entering his fifth and final season with the Tigers.

Clemson signed two of the nation’s top specialists as a part of its 2022 recruiting class.

Pinellas Park (Largo, Fla.) three-star kicker Robert Gunn III and Saralnad (Ala.) High School punter Jackson Smith officially put pen to paper with the Tigers on Wednesday, the first day of the early signing period for class of 2022 football recruits.

“So pumped,” Gunn told The Clemson Insider about signing with another specialist in Smith. “Can’t wait to get on the field again and also build a relationship with him and drop some bombs.”

After securing four early FBS scholarship offers from FAU, Army. Navy and Air Force, Gunn landed offers from the University of Texas and Clemson in a span of a week.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney indicated that Gunn was either headed to Texas or Georgia before Clemson locked him in.

“We said you have to come in here and compete for it,” Swinney said Wednesday. “Not only did he come in and compete for it, but he also knocked it out of the park. His kickoffs hit the hill.”

He committed to Clemson after his experience at the program’s Elite Retreat.

“I just fell in love with the school,” Gunn said. “The culture there is really real. The people there are just unbelievable. The atmosphere there couldn’t be better.”

“Since Day 1, my dad called it a ‘pipe dream’ and we just stuck with it and it paid off,” he added. “It was kind of emotional too because all these people didn’t believe in me and didn’t think I had the talent. I finally did it.”

Gunn, whose senior campaign at Pinellas Park came to an early end when he tore the ACL in his right (kicking) leg earlier this season, is considered by PrepStar as the No. 7 kicker in the nation.

He was an all-conference selection at both punter and placekicker in both 2020 and 2021.

The good news is he is ahead of schedule in his rehab and expects to be fully recovered this spring. He’ll arrive on campus as an early enrollee in January. Though, he’ll come in behind a veteran in B.T. Potter, who will surprisingly return for his fifth and final season of eligibility in 2022.

“I promise you, nobody’s gonna be happier than Robert Gunn,” Swinney said, “that he’ll have the opportunity to really kind of mentor with B.T. for a year. That’s gonna be a blessing for Robert.”

As for Smith, he’s rated as a five-star punter by NKR, which considers him the No. 1 punter in the country for the 2022 class. He’s ranked as the No. 5 punter in the nation by Kohl’s.

He committed to the Tigers in July after attending the All In Cookout. Smith was on campus again this past weekend as an official visitor and later announced that he would be putting placed on full scholarship.

“He’s just a great fit for us,” Swinney said. “This kid can absolutely bomb it.”

Smith punted 78 times over his last three seasons, placing 43 of them inside the 20, averaging 39 yards per punt as a senior and 38 as a junior. He also has experience at quarterback and tight end.

While there will be a changing of the guard with cornerbacks coach Mike Reed adding the role of special teams coordinator, Clemson can hang its hat on adding two big legs in this recruiting class.

Klubnik, an Austin native himself, was there to support his Westlake (Texas) teammate, Mark Sayegh, in addition to Gunn.

The Clemson Insider recently caught up with Klubnik regarding multiple topics, but the Westlake product touched on getting to support his future teammate in Gunn.

“It was awesome catching up with him and getting to spend 4-5 hours with him and his dad,” Klubnik said. “I spent the afternoon with him and was able to catch up and support him. It was awesome to build our relationship some more and another buddy that I know that I’ll have in a month.”

Both Klubnik and Gunn will be putting pen to paper with the Tigers this coming Wednesday, the first day of the early signing period for class of 2022 football recruits. They will also be enrolling early next month.

Members of Clemson’s coaching staff made the rounds in Florida this week, checking in on some future Tigers in the program’s 2022 recruiting class.

While in the Sunshine State on Thursday, Dabo Swinney and assistant coach Mickey Conn stopped by Pinellas Park High School (Largo, Fla.) to visit with kicker commitment Robert Gunn III. They also went out to lunch together.

The Clemson Insider caught up with Gunn, who appreciated the time he was able to spend with Swinney.

“It was awesome to have him here in my hometown,” Gunn said. “Got to show him around, and he enjoyed it a lot he said.”

What did Gunn hear from Clemson’s head coach while hanging out with him?

“Just can’t wait for me to come up there in January!” Gunn said.

Gunn, who committed to Clemson following the program’s Elite Retreat in June, has built a strong bond with his future coach.

“Me and Coach Swinney are close, family,” Gunn said. “He can’t wait to see me kick some bombs in the Valley.”

Gunn will enroll early at Clemson next month and is stoked to start his career as a Tiger.

“So pumped,” he said. “Am going to set a standard and be the best for myself and work hard and give 100 percent. Setting high standards for myself.”

Unfortunately, Gunn’s senior campaign at Pinellas Park came to an early end when he tore the ACL in his right (kicking) leg earlier this season, but the good news is he is ahead of schedule in his rehab and expects to be fully recovered this spring.

As The Clemson Insider has previously reported, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney was spending the majority of today in Florida, checking in with some class of 2022 commits.

Swinney was spotted earlier at Jesuit High School in Tampa (Fla.) visiting with three-star linebacker commit Wade Woodaz. In addition to his afternoon visit to IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.), Swinney made his way to the city of Largo, just outside of Tampa Bay.

He stopped by Pinellas Park High School to visit with three-star kicker commit Robert Gunn III. They also went out to lunch together.

“When I got there, I didn’t think about Clemson as what it is now,” Gunn told TCI after his official visit, reflecting on his commitment decision. “I got to learn a lot more about it. It was just the people, really, that were there, and all the benefits you get and just how Coach Swinney sets you up for the future to be a young man. It’s different there from all the other colleges. Coach Swinney has done one heck of a job, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”
