Packers to travel second-fewest miles during 2023 season

The Packers will play nine road games in Jordan Love’s first season as starter, but total travel will be minimal.

Despite playing nine road games, the Green Bay Packers will be staying close to home during Jordan Love’s first season as the starting quarterback. According to Bill Speros of Bookies.com, the Packers have the second-fewest travel miles (11,956) required for road games during the 2023 season. Only the Cincinnati Bengals (11,942) have fewer.

The miles were calculated using linear air distance between stadiums, so the numbers aren’t 100 percent accurate.

The schedule, which will be released on Thursday, helps tell the story. The Packers will face the Bears, Lions, Vikings, Falcons, Panthers, Broncos, Raiders, Giants and Steelers on the road. Per Speros, the trips involve crossing only 16 time zones. Overall, there isn’t a distance-intensive trip on the road schedule. The Packers play in a central location and do not have trips to the West Coast or international.

For comparison, the Seahawks will travel over 31,000 miles on the road in 2023, and eight total teams have travel requirements doubling that of the Packers.

Despite a light travel schedule, the Packers won’t have a big advantage in the NFC North. All four teams in the division face the NFC South and AFC West and are in the bottom six for total road miles in 2023.

Chiefs among four NFL teams with three consecutive road games in 2022

The #Chiefs are one of just four NFL teams to play three consecutive road games in 2022.

There are a lot of interesting quirks of the Kansas City Chiefs’ 2022 NFL schedule.

One of those quirks is that Kansas City is one of just four teams to play three consecutive road games at any point during the 2022 NFL season. First noted by NFL Network’s schedule reveal team — the Chiefs, Packers, Dolphins and Eagles will all play three consecutive road games at one point during the 2022 NFL season.

These three games come in the back half of the season for Kansas City, beginning on Week 13 when they travel to Cincinnati to face the Bengals. The following week the Chiefs will travel to Denver to face the Broncos on Sunday night. They’ll finish the three-game road stretch in Houston for a tilt with the Texans, perhaps the easiest of the three road games.

Unfortunately, the Chiefs don’t really benefit from playing three consecutive road games here. You’d expect this would mean a lenient home stretch at some other point of the season. Kansas City never has more than two consecutive home games at a time, though.

Really, the only good news to take away from this is the recent history of teams who’ve played three straight games on the road. According to NFL Network, since 2018, teams who have played three consecutive road games have a 22-11 record during that three-game span.

The Chiefs also have a winning record while playing on the road recently. In 2020, Kansas City was perfect on the road, finishing the year with an 8-0 road record. In 2021, they finished the year with a 5-3 record on the road, losing to the Ravens, Titans and Bengals at their respective home stadiums.

If the Chiefs can come away with a winning record after road games in Cincinnati, Denver and Houston, they should be in pretty good shape to close out the 2022 NFL season on a high note.

Chiefs will travel 15,661 miles for road games in 2020

The Kansas City Chiefs will be on the road quite a bit, but comparatively less than other NFL teams.

The 2020 NFL schedule has arrived and the Kansas City Chiefs will be spending a good chunk of time on the road.

According to ESPN’s Stats & Info Twitter handle, the Chiefs will travel a total of 15,661 miles during the 2020 NFL season. That number doesn’t include travel distance for Super Bowl LV. It is over 1,000 more miles than the team traveled during the 2019 NFL season (14,298), which is surprising because they had the Mexico City game against the Chargers in Week 11.

The Seahawks (29,203), Rams (26,104), 49ers (25,507) and Chargers (25,455) are among the teams that will travel the most miles during 2020. The one common factor here, of course, being that all four teams are located on the west coast of the United States.

ESPN noted that the Chiefs and Chargers have the biggest disparity in travel miles between division opponents in the NFL. Kansas City has an innate advantage when it comes to travel miles, being centrally located in the middle of the country. Teams on the west and east coasts just tend to have a disadvantage, especially during seasons when they play against divisions at the opposite ends of the country.

Sometimes teams will augment travel plans in order to limit the time spent on the road. For instance, the Rams will play the Eagles and Bills in back-to-back weeks. They’ll likely stay on the east coast instead of flying back to Los Angeles, only to have to turn around and head back to the opposite coast.

The Chiefs only have one stretch of games where doing this might make sense, in Weeks 14 and 15 where they play the Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints on the road in back-to-back weeks.
