Former Auburn cornerback Ro Torrence reveals transfer destination

Ro Torrence entered the transfer portal after just one season on the Plains.

Former Auburn cornerback [autotag]Ro Torrence[/autotag] has found his new home, he announced he is transferring to Arizona State Saturday afternoon. He has two more years of eligibility left and is expecting to contend for a starting job with the Sun Devils.

He spent just one season at Auburn before entering the transfer portal during spring practices. The Bessemer, Alabama native started his career at Hutchinson Community College, where he was the NJCAA Defensive Player of the Year and won a national championship.

He appeared in 10 games for Auburn last season, making five tackles, breaking up one pass, and forcing a fumble. His best game of the season came in the Birmingham Bowl when he had three tackles and forced the fumble.

The 6-foot-4, 200-pounder was expected to provide depth behind Jaylin Simpson and Nehemiah Pritchett. However, A.D. Diamond and D.J. James both spent time with the second-team ahead of Torrence before he entered the portal on March 23.

Auburn cornerback enters transfer portal

Ro Torrence played in 10 games last season.

Another Auburn football player is entering the transfer portal just a few hours after quarterback Dematrius Davis announced he was leaving the team.

This time, it’s Tigers cornerback Ro Torrence. Torrence, a junior, had already transferred to Auburn from NJCAA school Hutchinson Community College before the beginning of the 2021 season. He didn’t play much for Auburn, netting only five tackles, a forced fumble and a pass deflection during his action with the team.

His NJCAA career, however, showed lots of potential. Torrence was a first-team JUCO All-American in 2020 and only gave up a single pass completion in the regular season that year. He also came up with an interception in Hutchinson’s NJCAA title game against Snow College, a game the Hutchinson Blue Dragons won 29-27.

While Torrence didn’t get a lot of opportunities to produce in the 2021 season, he’ll still be missed amid a flurry of offseason transfers during the offseason where cornerbacks Eric Reed and Dreshun Miller entered the transfer portal. Depth at any position is a large contributor to great programs, and any loss of depth to the portal isn’t ideal for coach Bryan Harsin and the Auburn Tigers.

That being said, though, Auburn has covered the cornerback position nicely through the transfer portal and its 2022 class. Auburn currently has three four-star cornerbacks coming in from the 2022 class and former Oregon cornerback DJ James will come to The Plains this season to fill in the role as well.

Spring Football Preview: Projecting the cornerbacks

Could this be one of the deepest positions on the team heading into spring ball?

The final positional review comes with cornerbacks.

It is rare that a position group can lose its top player to the NFL and still be the strongest on the team, but that looks to be true for the Auburn cornerback room.

Auburn will be without one of the best corners in college football a season ago in Roger McCreary, but Auburn has made a habit of replacing their top corner and not a step.

The past couple seasons and they once again have a player ready to take over in Jaylin Simpson.

Simpson is clearly the top corner on the team, but Auburn has several solid candidates for the other corner spot, here is a look at the group ahead of spring practices.

Multiple Auburn Tigers out for game vs Alabama State

Auburn will be without two starters and some depth players during their matchup with Alabama State.

Auburn will be without two starters and three depth players during their matchup with Alabama State today at 11 am CT.

Starting wide receiver Ja’Varrius Johnson is not going through pre-game warmups, per Christian Clemente of Auburnsports.com.

Shaun Shivers is not expected to play today as well. Tar’Varish Dawson will dress out but is not expected to play. Expect to see a lot of Jarquez Hunter, Jordan Ingram, and Sean Jackson to fill in during the second half. Cornerback Jaylin Simpson will dress out but is not expected to have a full workload due to a groin injury.

Cornerback Ro Torrence will not see the field today.

Dreshun Miller, the talented transfer from West Virginia, is expected to fill in for Simpson and Torrence.
