Pete Carroll explains why the Seahawks benched Riq Woolen

Carroll says Woolen couldn’t hold up tackling because of the shoulder.

You might have noticed something odd in the middle of the 49ers’ dominant win over the Seahawks last night. On the right side of the field, Mike Jackson could be seen playing the boundary where normally Riq Woolen is lined up. Woolen was pulled out of the game in the first half after whiffing on a few tackles as well as a friendly-fire incident near the sideline.

After the game was over, head coach Pete Carroll told reporters that Woolen’s shoulder was the reason why he put Jackson in. Carroll says he couldn’t hold up tackling because of the shoulder.

Woolen did not show up on the team’s injury report in the days leading up to last night’s game, so whatever it is it’s a new issue.

Aside from a shoulder stinger for Jason Peters, there have been no reports of any other injuries for the Seahawks coming out of the game.

Watch: Riq Woolen was starstruck when meeting Carson Wentz

Watch.

The Rams recently signed Carson Wentz to play backup behind Matt Stafford. After LA’s one-point win on Sunday, Seahawks cornerback Riq Woolen was excited to meet Wentz.

Watch.

This may seem odd to some fans, but they need to remember how special Wentz was when he was healthy. Prior to his knee injury in 2017 Wentz was one of the league’s better quarterbacks and would have been in the MVP conversation that year had he stayed healthy. He finished that campaign with an 11-2 record and led the NFL with a 7.5% touchdown rate and a 78.5 QBR. Wentz also had his moments as recently as the 2021 season, when he went 9-8 and posted 27 touchdown passes to go with seven interceptions. He has not appeared in a game yet this year.

As for Woolen, he had a rough start to the 2023 season but has bounced back strong the last couple of games. For the year he has allowed a 50% completion rate and a 68.7 passer rating in coverage. Woolen also has two interceptions and seven passes defensed.

Watch: Seahawks CB Riq Woolen was so excited to meet Carson Wentz

Seahawks corner Riq Woolen is a *big* fan of new Rams quarterback Carson Wentz

The Los Angeles Rams got a much-needed victory against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday afternoon, their first since Week 6. Though Carson Wentz didn’t see the field in his first game with his new team, he apparently had a huge fan on the other side of the field: Seahawks corner Riq Woolen.

The Seahawks Shared a video of Woolen going up to Wentz after the game and he struggled to contain his excitement over meeting the new Rams quarterback.

“I’m not even trying to be a fangirl right now. Chill, bro,” he said, trying to play it cool. “You’re a legend, too, bro. Hell yeah. Nice to meet you, man. I’m Tariq, bro. Hell yeah, nice to meet you.”

What are the chances Woolen thought Wentz was actually Matthew Stafford? They’re probably higher than 0%.

Not to downplay the player Wentz once was with the Eagles, but he isn’t exactly a star quarterback anymore. But hey, maybe Woolen just really enjoyed watching Wentz play during his prime.

After all, Woolen is six years younger than Wentz.

Seahawks Week 12 injury report: Geno Smith listed as LIMITED

The Seattle Seahawks have are hurdling towards their Thanksgiving showdown against the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday Night Football. The health of the team – specifically for quarterback Geno Smith – is the focus of the week for Seattle.

The Seahawks had another walk-through, similar to Monday. As such, the injury report is merely an estimation of what a full practice would have yielded. Fortunately, Smith was upgraded from a theoretical “did not participate” to a “limited.”

12 strong PFF grades for the Seahawks from Week 11 loss

Here are 12 solid individual Pro Football Focus grades for Seattle this week.

Doom and gloom are the order of the day in Seahawks Country, where the team just suffered their most self-destructive loss of the Pete Carroll era. Following a brutal and largely self-inflicted loss by one point to the division rival Rams, it’ll be tough to find positives.

Nevertheless, let’s try to salvage some sunshine from this situation. The Seahawks got strong performances from several of their most-important players, including Charles Cross and the cornerbacks. Here are 12 solid individual Pro Football Focus grades for Seattle this week.

Watch: What Seahawks players told the media after loss to Rams

Watch: Pete Carroll, Geno Smith, Riq Woolen, Quandre Diggs and Jason Myers speak with reporters after loss to Rams.

The Seattle Seahawks got dominated by the Baltimore Ravens a few weeks ago by more than 30 points, and even that didn’t hurt as much as Seattle’s one-point loss to the division-rival Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. Their implosion in the fourth quarter against LA somehow feels like the worst loss in the Pete Carroll era, or at least the most avoidable and self-inflicted one.

In the locker room after the game the mood was understandably subdued. Reporters did get to hear from Carroll, plus Geno Smith, Riq Woolen, Quandre Diggs and Jason Myers, though. Here’s what they had to say.

Seahawks have the most zone-heavy defense in NFL this season

The Seahawks have lined up in some version of zone on 84% of their snaps

The Seahawks secondary is about as talented as any in the NFL this year. With Riq Woolen, Devon Witherspoon and Tre Brown at cornerback you’d figure that they would be playiung a lot of man defense. The opposite is the case, though. In fact, according to this chart no team in the league is playing more zone defense than Seattle this year.

The Seahawks have lined up in some version of zone on 84% of their snaps. Check it out:

While it doesn’t really mesh with their personnel, this doesn’t come as a surprise. Head coach Pete Carroll has always preferred a heavy zone scheme no matter who his defensive coordinator is or who’s playing on the back end. Maybe some day that will change, but it doesn’t seem likely after 13 years of this.
