Ricky Martinez joins New Mexico State’s staff

Former Tennessee player and assistant Ricky Martinez hired at New Mexico State.

Tennessee student assistant coach Ricky Martinez was hired at New Mexico State on Thursday.

Martinez will serve as recruiting coordinator and oversee infielders at New Mexico State under head coach Jake Angier.

Martinez played shortstop for the Vols in 2019. He transferred to Tennessee from Grayson College (2018) and Sacramento State (2017).

Angier was an assistant coach at Sacramento State from 2014-19.

Martinez played in 67 games at Tennessee, recording a .279 batting average, 62 hits, including a team-high 18 doubles, and 28 RBIs.

He was selected in the 18th round of the 2019 MLB draft by Arizona.

Martinez served as Tennessee’ student assistant coach from 2022-23. The Vols advanced to the 2023 College World Series.

75 University of Tennessee student-athletes are slated to graduate this weekend.

Commencement ceremonies will take place at Thompson-Boling Arena Friday-Sunday.

“This weekend signifies the most important element of the student-athlete experience,” Tennessee Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics Danny White said in a UT press release. “We want our student-athletes to win championships and achieve excellence athletically, but all of that is supplemental to the No. 1 goal, which is earning that University of Tennessee degree. We’re all proud of these men and women for their extraordinary accomplishments and can’t wait to see what the future has in store for them.”
