Vols promote Richard Jackson to full-time assistant coach

Tennessee baseball promotes Richard Jackson to a full-time assistant coach.

Tennessee announced on Thursday a promotion for former Vol Richard Jackson.

Jackson will serve as an assistant coach for Tennessee. His promotion comes after a change by the NCAA in allowing schools to add a third full-time assistant coach.

“Loyalty and family are two things that everyone in our group takes very seriously, not just with words but with actions,” Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello said. “Richard was a great teammate and competitor as a player and continues to be both of those things regardless of his title.”

Jackson pitched for the Vols from 2016-19.

He served as a student assistant at Tennessee in 2020 before being promoted to a volunteer assistant from 2021-22.

Fourth-year Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello announced Richard Jackson will serve as a volunteer assistant coach for the Vols.

Jackson spent the previous two seasons as a student assistant coach for Tennessee.

Jackson replaces Ross Kivett.

Kivett left Tennessee following the conclusion of the 2021 season. He accepted a full-time assistant coaching position at the University of Houston.

“The secret sauce, if any, to our program is that we have some of the best assistant coaches and support personnel in college baseball,” Vitello said in a UT press release. “It has become a routine for those folks to receive outside offers since we have been in Knoxville.

“Due to NCAA limits on two paid assistants in baseball, the one thing we can’t offer Ross right now is a full-time position with benefits. Houston could do that. We are happy to see one Vol rewarded for his efforts and success. We are equally excited to see another Vol move up to fill in the void left behind.”
