Kevin Durant and his agent/business partner Rich Kleiman already have their eyes on owning an NBA team one day. “For sure, a hundred percent,” Kleiman told Insider when asked if he and Durant want to get into the NBA ownership ranks. “Kevin clearly will have many opportunities to be associated with NBA teams and organizations, staying around the game his whole life. I hope I do as well. And I hope that the business we’re building puts us in a position one day to be able to have an opportunity to buy into an NBA team.”

More on this storyline

Kleiman told Insider that, ideally, he and Durant would be hands-on owners. “I think that at whatever level we were able to do it, being hands-on with an organization is also what’s really appealing,” Kleiman said. “I’d love to be able to operate as a CEO of an NBA organization, and I’m sure Kevin would love to be able to have a hand in building, from a player and operational standpoint, being able to build a roster. But I think that that’s everyone’s dream right now in some capacity in our world.” -via Insider.com / November 7, 2022
Kleiman praised LeBron James as a trailblazer and said he and Durant have already put feelers out there. “I think if LeBron is able to get into Vegas and then you see D-Wade in Utah, I think that only probably opens up the runway even moreso for Kevin having an opportunity to do that,” Kleiman said. “And, you know, we’ve put our flags in the ground, and we have appropriate relationships, and we’re doing our behind-the-scenes due diligence.” -via Insider.com / November 7, 2022
Front office executive No. 6: “I’m assuming there’s some sort of agreement with Kevin. Like, ‘Look, if you want to move, we’ll move you. And we’re not going to move you to New Orleans and we’re not going to move you to Sacramento and we’re not going to move you to Indiana.’ So if the best Brooklyn can do is the Lakers, then if I was the Lakers, that’s what I’d be waiting on.” -via The Athletic / November 7, 2022

Kevin Durant is picking up the pickleball craze. The Nets star and Rich Kleiman, his business partner, have purchased an expansion team in Major League Pickleball. 35V, their investment company, will also serve as strategic partners for the league, while running their team. “35V is committed to investing in the future of sports and emerging opportunities, and Major League Pickleball is a league we are incredibly excited about,” Kleiman said in a statement. “We can’t wait to build this team from the ground up as well as work to elevate the sport and the league to unprecedented heights. Brooklyn is explosive but its offense just isn’t very imaginative. It’s a couple of passes, maybe a screen and then rely on the superior skills of KD/Kyrie to make a play. Pels were a bottom third defense last season. Nets can’t do much with them. – 9:04 PM

I tweet it at least once a season so I might as well get off in G1 of the Nets’ season: Durant’s shot blocking ability is vastly unidentified. Moreover, like Bill Russell was famed for, KD keeps the snuff in bounds. – 8:48 PM

The Nets, who trailed by as many as 18, find themselves down to the Pelicans, 58-50, after a scrappy second quarter. Kevin Durant has 21 points on 6/12 shooting, and everyone else is feeding off his energy. His plays got Barclays Center rocking: a one-footed jumper & block on BI. – 8:47 PM

More on this storyline

The 35V team will debut next year during the 2023 season as part of the league’s expansion. The league will grow from 12 teams to 16. “Kevin Durant, Rich Kleiman and 35V are going to be game-changing partners for Major League Pickleball,” Steve Kuhn, the league’s founder and CEO, said. “They not only bring passion for the game, but also unrivaled expertise to help us to continue to grow. We’re especially excited about their plans to bring pickleball to underserved communities – something they have done with basketball for years.” -via The Athletic / October 20, 2022
New Orleans Pelicans: When asked about Kevin Durant complimenting him before the game, Brandon Ingram joked: “I think he was trying to butter me up a little bit so I would come out there a little soft” Ingram appreciated the praise from KD, and called him “probably the best player in our league” -via Twitter @PelicansNBA / October 20, 2022
“[We’ve got to] box out, put a body on people, not let them get in our paint on defense,” Durant explained after the game. “You let a team get in your paint, you leave your guys on the perimeter, now they’re crashing for the glass, so we’ve got to keep the ball out the paint. [If] they’re shooting over us, then their team’s got no choice but to get back on defense instead of crashing, so we’ve just got to keep teams out of the paint.” -via New York Daily News / October 20, 2022

“We want to build a lasting franchise,” a highly placed Nets source told the Post, “so this is not just about this year.” Durant and his business partner Rich Kleiman met with the Nets braintrust Monday in Los Angeles. The minutes of the meeting aren’t available, but a Nets source said this isn’t just an uneasy cease-fire or temporary solution until a Durant deal is found. They insist he’s re-invested long-term.

KD wanted out & tried nearly every trick in the superstar playbook. The last would be working-to-rule in training camp & early in regular season, the ugliest & most disruptive route, but he chose what always seemed clear: the best team he could play on next season was the Nets. – 11:42 AM

Q: Are the Nets done building their roster now? Brian Lewis: Not close. Not by a long shot. Yes, they let their DeAndre Jordan trade exception expire last week, but the Nets have six open roster spots, tied for the most in the entire NBA — three Exhibit 10s, a two-way and two standard spots. The first domino could be David Duke Jr., who rejected their two-way offer and is holding out for a standard deal. But they still have to fill out the rest of the roster. Nic Claxton — whose starts have gone from zero to one to 19 in his three years in the league — has proclaimed himself ready to seize the center spot. But with DayRon Sharpe the only other 5 on the roster, it wouldn’t be a shock to see them look for a backup/competition for Claxton. And if they wanted to appease Durant, they could bring in Carmelo Anthony, a move he’s wanted them to make. -via New York Post / August 24, 2022
John Gambadoro: The Phoenix Suns had multiple conversations with the Nets this offseason but none in the last couple of weeks. The Suns were never out of it because they were never really in it. Nets were always insistent the return had to be better than what Utah got for Gobert. Mikal Bridges was never offered because no formal offer was ever made from Phoenix nor was there a proposal made by the Nets. The Suns simply did not have what Brooklyn wanted – were told several times they did not have what it would take to get a deal done. -via Twitter / August 24, 2022
The prospect of landing the great Kevin Durant on a four-year deal wasn’t enough to inspire Boston to include Marcus Smart, Toronto to include Scottie Barnes or Memphis to include Jaren Jackson Jr. or Desmond Bane. These are very good players, to be sure, but none has ever worn an All-Star jersey. And Durant, who turns 34 next month, is a former MVP with two rings, two NBA Finals MVP trophies, 12 All-Star berths and a stat line from last season that shows he still has elite basketball left. (Only Durant and LeBron James averaged at least 29 points, seven rebounds and six assists.) I understand the context here, how the combination of his injury history, age and personality (will he be happy in the next spot?) impact every team’s internal calculus. But even with all of that, it’s still mind-boggling that KEVIN DURANT hasn’t yielded better offers than this. -via The Athletic / August 24, 2022

“[Durant is] where he’s at every summer,” said Rich Kleiman, his longtime business partner with Thirty Five Ventures and an executive producer on the film. “He has an insane work ethic. He’s in the gym every single day. He relies on his routine and the work he puts into the game. He’s 15 years in the NBA. We’re 10 years working together. Every time you think something is the end of the world, or you think you’ve got to go hide out in a hut and disappear from the world, you realize it’s just life. He’s focused on that, and all the other stuff will figure itself out.”

He didn’t go to Duke University law …

He didn’t go to Duke University law school like renowned sports agent Drew Rosenhaus, or have a relative cutting deals at Universal Music, making his path to celebrity row at Madison Square Garden nearly unreplicable. “I would see all these corporate guys [courtside] and thought I couldn’t do that — I’m not going to college. Then seeing Clive Davis, Marty Van Deer and Puffy, Jimmy [Iovine] and music big wigs around the time I was hustling in that world was when I wanted the music industry energy,” he says of MSG’s Golden Age, with the Knicks and Rangers making runs well into June seemingly every year during the ‘90s. With hoop dreams of his own six feet under, Kleiman enrolled at Boston University, but his time there in the general studies program wouldn’t last long. Dropping out after a semester, which he now chalks up to not being “disciplined enough,” Kleiman remained in Beantown for two years working as a bookie. He even spent a year in Boca Raton, Florida — but contrary to the typical relaxing life of retirees in the Sunshine State, Kleiman grinded, working odd jobs but priding himself on continuing to build his interstate Rolodex.
