Rhys Dakin earns Ray Guy Award Punter of the Week

Iowa football’s Rhys Dakin earned the Ray Guy Award Punter of the Week national weekly honor after his performance at Minnesota.

Rhys Dakin had himself a night at Minnesota.

The freshman punter from Melbourne, Australia, enjoyed his coming-out party in the Hawkeyes’ 31-14 win over the Gophers. Dakin’s right leg was one of the big developments in the win over Minnesota.

The 6-foot-4, 225 pound punter booted five punts for an average of 49.6 yards per punt in the win over Minnesota.

Three of his punts traveled 50 yards or more, including his career-long 55-yard punt in the second quarter.

Dakin also pinned Minnesota inside its 20-yard line on three occasions. As a result of his big performance, Dakin earned the Ray Guy Award Punter of the Week honor. It’s the first national weekly honor of Dakin’s budding Hawkeye career.

Through the season’s first four games, Dakin has punted 23 times for an average of 43.6 yards per punt. Ten of Dakin’s punts have been downed inside the opponents’ 20-yard line.

“Yeah, I just talked to LeVar coming out. I said, ‘Did he do anything wrong tonight?’ I mean, he had one punt LeVar wasn’t pleased with totally, but, yeah, I thought he did a great job and that was a huge component of the game.

“This is his first road game, his first conference game, his fourth game in American football. He just seemed unfazed. The wind wasn’t real bad out there, but it didn’t seem to matter which way we were going. He just kept putting them down there and they had a long field all night long, which was really big and helping us. Although they still drove it twice, but typically they were starting out inside the 25 which is really helpful. I thought he was really good,” Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz said of Dakin following the victory.

Given some of the lofty expectations for Dakin and the fact that he is succeeding current Chicago Bear and former Ray Guy Award-winning punter Tory Taylor, Ferentz feels Dakin has responded well to any early-season adversities.

“He’s been pretty good ever since he showed up and you know we weren’t working football with him, but just going back to the start of camp and I think it was Tuesday, he had a couple bad ones which is not like him. But then a couple plays later or punts later, he’s nailing it again. So, he typically practices really well. He’s steady. Probably doesn’t have the proficiency or expertise that Tory had a year ago, but you got a four-year gap there in that regard.

“I couldn’t be more pleased and to me the most pleasing thing is just watching his demeanor. He doesn’t seem to get too rattled or affected. Kind of liked his little, you know, showed a muscle. There’s a new thing on Big Ten enforcement on taunting, too, and I guess you can’t, guys are like shooting arrows and stuff, so he didn’t get a penalty for doing anything. But, I liked his moxie. That was good. He’s got a good spirit to him,” Ferentz said.

Dakin and Iowa return to action on Saturday, Oct. 5 with a road trip to No. 3 Ohio State. The game will kickoff at 2:30 p.m. CT and be televised on CBS.

247Sports features Rhys Dakin on preseason true freshman All-American team

247Sports is a believer in what Rhys Dakin will bring to Iowa.

Iowa City just might be morphing into the punting capital of the world.

That makes sense for a program and fan base that prints and proudly dons “Punting is Winning” t-shirts.

Fresh off Tory Taylor’s Ray Guy Award-winning season, the Iowa Hawkeyes appear to have found their next great punter. Reports out of Iowa’s fall camp can’t stop raving about freshman punter Rhys Dakin.

The 6-foot-4, 225 pound freshman is from Melbourne, Australia, and he can really boom it.

Dakin put on an impressive display during Kids’ Day at Kinnick and the expectation is that he will only continue to get better and refine the nuances of his game.

247Sports is among those buying early stock in what Dakin will bring to the Hawkeyes. Dakin was tabbed to 247Sports’ preseason true freshman All-American team.

There might not be bigger shoes to fill nationally than Tory Taylor at Iowa. He was a multi-time All-American and often a get-out-of-jail-free card for the Iowa offense. Iowa went back to Australia to find his replacement, and the early word on Rhys Dakin this offseason has been strong, though I’m sure that Iowa fans would like to see less of him in 2024 than they did Taylor last year. – Chris Hummer, 247Sports.

Dakin has consistently turned heads throughout his abbreviated time in Iowa City, and, at Iowa, his role will be a pivotal one.

The Hawkeyes have made a history and a habit of pairing defense and special teams with just enough offense to perfection. Dakin’s leg could prove to be another valuable weapon in the third phase of the game for Iowa in 2024.

“It’s awesome to come to a place where people actually appreciate punting,” Dakin said recently.

At Iowa’s Media Day, Dakin discussed his best distance and hang times so far.

“I had a couple of 60-yarders today. I’ve kicked one I’m going to say 65 probably, like confirmed. My best hang time is a 5.7, so definitely take pride in my hang time,” Dakin said.

Though he’s been mistaken for Tory Taylor a few times in Iowa City already, fans can trust that won’t last for long.

247Sports joins USA TODAY Sports in the preseason pub for Dakin. Dakin was tabbed to USA TODAY Sports’ list of instant impact freshmen.

Rhys Dakin among USA TODAY Sports’ instant impact freshmen

An instant-impact freshman.

The Iowa Hawkeyes know how to turn terrific play in the third phase of the game into winning football.

Punting is winning. That’s a moniker that’s taken to heart in Iowa City.

Last season, storied Hawkeye punter Tory Taylor captured the Ray Guy Award after setting the NCAA single-season punting yardage record with 4,479 yards on 93 punts. Taylor had 109 punts downed inside the opponents’ 20-yard-line over the past three seasons.

Taylor was so good that the Chicago Bears were comfortable using a fourth-round pick on him in the 2024 NFL draft.

With Taylor off to the Windy City in the NFL, opposing fan bases might have been holding out hope that one of Iowa’s biggest weapons was out of the picture. While Taylor moves on to Chicago, it looks like Iowa has its next great weapon in the special teams department.

Rhys Dakin, another Aussie, steps in as the punter for the Hawkeyes. The 6-foot-4, 225 pound freshman from Melbourne is already turning heads.

The word is getting out, too. USA TODAY Sports’ Paul Myerberg included Dakin among his 10 college football freshmen ready to make an instant impact in the 2024 season.

With punting maestro Tory Taylor off to the NFL, Iowa will turn this all-important position over to another Australian important in Dakin, who arrives in the Big Ten via Melbourne. The track record of imported punters is very strong: Taylor was the second Australian in a row to win the Ray Guy Award as the nation’s best at the position when he did so last year, following Rutgers’ Adam Korsak, and Australians took home the award for five years in a row from 2013-17. – Myerberg, USA TODAY Sports.

Taylor joins a list from Myerberg that features Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola, Georgia cornerback Ellis Robinson IV, Auburn wide receiver Cam Coleman, Missouri defensive end Williams Nwaneri, Notre Dame linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa, Colorado offensive tackle Jordan Seaton, South Carolina EDGE Dylan Stewart and Texas Tech wide receiver Micah Hudson.

Dakin will get his first chance to impress in live action on Aug. 31 when the Hawkeyes host Illinois State in their season opener from Kinnick Stadium.

Rhys Dakin listed among 247Sports’ 100 impact true freshmen

Iowa has its next great Australian punter.

Four Iowa Hawkeyes were selected in the 2024 NFL draft. One of those Hawkeyes might have been the best in the history of his position at the University of Iowa.

After a storied career in Iowa City, Tory Taylor was selected with pick No. 122 in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL draft by the Chicago Bears.

As the next chapter begins for Taylor, it means that Iowa needs to find someone new to flip fields and set up shop for its stingy defense.

Out of ProKick Australia, Rhys Dakin signed with Iowa in the 2024 signing class to keep the Aussie pipeline rolling. The 6-foot-3, 210 pound punter was rated as a three-star signee and as the No. 2 punter in the 2024 class per 247Sports.

Now, as the season approaches, Dakin was included among Chris Hummer’s 100 first-year players who will influence the 2024 college football season.

Yes, I’m including a specialist on this list. After all, who’s been more impactful for Iowa in recent years than All-American punter Tory Taylor? He’s off to the NFL, and the Hawkeyes went back to Australia to find his replacement. Dakin has a huge leg and already looks primed to start. He’ll have bigger shoes to fill than perhaps any player in college football, pun intended.  – Hummer, 247Sports.

Dakin does have large shoes to fill. Taylor leaves as a Hawkeye legend that played an integral role in helping Iowa win a number of close games thanks to his ability to flip fields and pin opponents deep.

At Iowa, excellence in special teams is something the fan base expects. Dakin is next in line and should perform admirably.
