Rex Ryan has harsh advice for Patriots coach Bill Belichick

Rex Ryan goes in hard on Bill Belichick’s Patriots: “Your team stinks”

ESPN analyst and Bill Belichick’s former adversary, Rex Ryan, has obviously had enough of the New England Patriots’ continued indecision at the quarterback position.

Belichick has been non-committal to naming Mac Jones or Bailey Zappe as the starting quarterback for the Patriots. It’s a bizarre approach that culminated in Jones taking all of the first-half snaps under center on Sunday, while Zappe played for the entire second half of the game.

“Please stop. Just name your dang starter,” Ryan urged Belichick, when appearing on ESPN’s “Get Up.” “It doesn’t matter. They both stink. Whether it’s Zappe, Pea Shooter Jones—we don’t care. They both stink. Just go ahead and save the drama. Like we care about your team. Your team stinks.”

When appearing on “The Greg Hill Show” on Monday morning, Belichick claimed he wasn’t going to announce starters every week, particularly at the quarterback position.

So it could be another week of speculation and guess work when it comes to Week 13 in New England.

Rex Ryan lambasted Bill Belichick for creating fake drama around both of his terrible QBs

Rex Ryan kind of has a point here, though. Even if he is being petty.

Calling what’s happening to Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots a “down year” right now might be talking a little too kindly.

The Patriots are awful. New England is stacking losses and climbing up the draft board as the team tries to figure out its problem at quarterback. Well, uh, actually, the team seems to have the problem figured out. And the problem is both the Patriots’ options at QB kind of stink. There’s not much the team can do to solve that.

Yet, every single week Bill Belichick makes it a mystery about which quarterback he’ll start for each game between Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe. You know, as if it actually matters. It’s a very Belichick-y thing to do. It’s also very annoying.

One person who has grown tired of it is Rex Ryan. He absolutely obliterated Belichick for doing this over and over and over again.

“Just name your dang starter. It doesn’t matter — they both stink. Whether it’s Zappe or pea-shooter Jones, we don’t care. They stink. Just go ahead and save the drama. Like we care about your team. Your team stinks.”

PEA-SHOOTER JONES, Y’ALL. Whew. Rex is on one with this one. He wasn’t done, either. He has more smoke for Belichick. He gave Tom Brady all of the credit for the Patriots’ dynasty.

“This team plays like they’re exhausted. The Patriot Way. That’s it. It exhausts these kids. Tom Brady was the only reason you won anyway. Alright. I’m just telling you the difference. Tom Brady was the absolute difference. I said from jump they would never win again when that guy trotted down to Tampa…Bill Belichick. The greatest in the history — I will never dispute that. I had my [expletive] kicked by him a million times. But if you think for a minute that it wasn’t about Tom Brady you’re absolutely crazy.”

Man. Rex has been holding this rant in for years. I just know it. Belichick spent years beating up on him when he was the Jets’ head coach. This is payback.

He’s not wrong, though! At this point, Belichick is just toying with his quarterbacks. It’s not helping anyone.

Rex might just be being petty here. But he’s also very right. Sorry, Patriots fans.

Rex Ryan takes another shot at Patriots QB Mac Jones following loss

ESPN analyst Rex Ryan did not mince words when talking about Mac Jones.

ESPN analyst Rex Ryan has not been shy in criticizing New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones. Ryan took more shots at Jones after the quarterback’s performance against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

Jones went 15-of-20 on the afternoon, throwing for 170 yards and an interception. He took five sacks in the game as well. His 25.9 quarterback rating was his third-lowest rating this season. The quarterback did average 8.5 yards per pass, but it was not enough in what was an inconsistent day.

Ryan used Sunday’s poor performance to take another shot at Jones, as the Patriots continue to freefall in the standings. He did not hold back, to say the least, as transcribed by NESN.com’s Adam London.

“It’s never a personal thing, I just give my opinion. I don’t know this young man from anybody, but he’s not an NFL quarterback,” Ryan said, when appearing on ESPN’s “Get Up.” “He lacks the arm talent. Here’s the other thing: Any time the guy extends plays, which is what you have to do in today’s game, he’s awful. He’s absolutely atrocious. The worst part about this game, to me, is four sacks on third down. What are you doing?

“Can I prove that he’s got no arm? He averages 4.3 yards past the line of scrimmage on his pass attempts. That would be 32nd in the league. He completed 15 passes. Good for you. You take four sacks on third down. All you’re doing is hitting the check-downs because that’s all he can throw. Anything where he has to push the ball down the field, he struggles. It’s never personal. The guy can’t play. I said it four years ago and I still believe it.”

New England is in a bit of a bind at the quarterback position. They do not have any reliable starting options right now, and they still have the meat of their schedule to go.

There have been quarterbacks floated around as options for New England, including Kyler Murray.

Whatever the case may be, there is no quick fix for this year, and it seems like the writing is on the wall for Jones. Perhaps now, an earnest rebuild can begin in New England, as the Patriots look to get back in the playoff hunt in future seasons.

Pat McAfee claims Broncos are considering DC switch to Rex Ryan

Pat McAfee claims the Broncos might switch to Rex Ryan at DC. Adam Schefter, meanwhile, says that’s not happening, at least not “right now.”

Pat McAfee claims that the Denver Broncos might consider making a change at defensive coordinator and bringing in Rex Ryan as their new DC.

“There’s rumblings right now, rumors, rumors … the Broncos might be making a change at DC, allegedly,” McAfee said on show Tuesday. “I don’t know when … [but it could be] Rex Ryan potentially.”

The timing of this report/rumor from McAfree is curious because Denver’s defense just turned in its best performance of the season in a 19-8 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 6.

Ryan was a candidate for the job in the offseason, but the team ended up hiring Vance Joseph instead. Since then, Ryan has blasted the team’s defensive performances this year.

Earlier this season, Ryan hinted that the Broncos did not meet his contract demands when he interviewed for the DC job during the offseason. “[M]aybe they should have ponied up a little bit, you know what I’m saying?” Ryan said on ESPN.

McAfee hinted on Tuesday that Ryan needs a big offer to get him to leave his television job, and the punter-turned-entertainer pointed out that Denver has the wealthiest ownership group in the NFL.

“They can pay a little bit more for the coach’s salary because there’s no coaching salary cap,” McAfee said. “So I guess we should potentially think about maybe Rex Ryan returning [to the NFL].”

For what it’s worth, ESPN’s Adam Schefter said on McAfee’s show on Tuesday that Ryan isn’t going to the Broncos, at least not “right now.” Schefter did note that at the end of the season, “anything’s possible.”

This is nothing more than a rumor at this point. But if Denver eventually moves on from Joseph, Ryan will obviously be a name to keep an eye on.

Rex Ryan said he would love to defend against ‘weak arm’ Mac Jones

Rex Ryan believes Mac Jones has one of the weakest arms of all NFL starting quarterbacks

NFL analyst and former head coach Rex Ryan has never been shy about criticizing New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones. Ryan didn’t hold back this week, either, following Jones’ disappointing performance in the Patriots’ 38-3 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Jones went 12-of-21 on the afternoon, throwing for 150 yards and two interceptions. His 39.9 quarterback rating was his lowest to this point in the season. His 150 passing yards were also a season-low.

Late in the third quarter, coach Bill Belichick decided he’d seen enough and benched Jones for backup quarterback Bailey Zappe.

Belichick does not anticipate any drastic plans at the quarterback position, as the Patriots get set to take on the New Orleans Saints in Week 5. That still didn’t stop Ryan from absolutely shredding Jones on Monday’s episode of “Get Up”.

“The guy doesn’t have a whole lot of arm talent,” Ryan said. “I’ve said it from jump. Maybe the weakest arm for all starting quarterbacks in the league. I don’t hate. I’m telling you from all of the years I’ve had to defend against everybody. I would love to defend against this guy. Are you kidding me? This guy can’t throw. To think this guy is going to take you to where you want to go, you’re absolutely crazy. This guy can’t pitch it outside the numbers.”

Sunday’s performance from Jones certainly puts the future of the Patriots quarterback position in question. Jones has had an up-and-down tenure during his time in New England and has not consistently produced at a position that is crucial in today’s NFL.

One has to wonder where New England goes from here at quarterback, with a solid group of collegiate signal-callers coming up in the near future.

Rex Ryan blasts Broncos’ defense again after another poor performance

Rex Ryan seemingly implied that the Broncos did not meet his contract demands this offseason and they’re now paying the price on defense.

Rex Ryan doesn’t mind kicking a team while they’re down.

Ryan, who interviewed for the Denver Broncos’ defensive coordinator position this offseason but didn’t get the job, blasted the team’s defense and indirectly criticized coordinator Vance Joseph after their two-point loss in Week 2.

Following an absolutely embarrassing 70-20 loss to the Miami Dolphins in Week 3, Ryan was back on ESPN earlier this week to criticize Denver’s defense once again.

“You know what’s funny, I’m sitting here like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ That could have been me there — like, literally — maybe they should have ponied up a little bit, you know what I’m saying?” Ryan said on Get Up, seemingly suggesting the Broncos should have met his contract demands this offseason.

Ryan did not hold back.

“It’s just brutal,” the former coach said. “I see it as absolutely a disgrace. … Nobody saw this coming. This defense literally was supposed to be top-five defense in the league and maybe No. 1 with the right guy running it.”

Ryan clearly seems to be implying that he would have been a better choice to run the team’s defense without directly mentioning Joseph. The Broncos, meanwhile, have said they’re not firing Joseph (at least not this week).

If the defense continues to struggle, though, Joseph’s job might be in jeopardy at some point. If the current DC is eventually fired, Ryan might be a name to keep on eye on as a potential replacement.

Broncos aren’t firing defensive coordinator Vance Joseph

The Broncos are not firing defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, at least not this week.

The Denver Broncos’ defense was absolutely embarrassed by the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, allowing 350 rushing yards, 376 passing yards and 10 touchdowns in a 70-20 loss in Week 3.

That dismal performance has led to many fans and pundits (including Broncos Wire) asking for defensive coordinator Vance Joseph to be fired. Denver, however, will not fire Joseph, at least not this week.

“No, and that would not be something that I’d shared on a conference call if that were ever the case,” head coach Sean Payton said when asked during Monday’s conference call if he was considering making changes to the coaching staff. “So no, to answer your question.”

If the Broncos’ defense continues to struggle, Joseph’s status might be revisited later in the season. If he eventually is fired, Denver would obviously need an in-season replacement. The Broncos could perhaps consider bringing back Wade Phillips or hiring Rex Ryan, who interviewed for the DC job this offseason.

Denver’s most obvious in-house candidate is defensive backs coach Christian Parker, but it might not be fair to dump this mess on him during the season.

For now, the Broncos are sticking with Joseph. We’ll see if that changes in the coming weeks.

Rex Ryan blasts Broncos’ defense after poor start

“There’s no reason why this shouldn’t be the top defense in the league,” Rex Ryan said of the Broncos’ defense.

Rex Ryan made two appearances on ESPN on Monday — on Get Up and on First Take — and the former NFL coach blasted the Denver Broncos’ defense and defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, although he did not mention Joseph by name.

“This team has averaged more points per possession than any [other] offensive unit in the National Football League, nobody knows that — it’s the truth,” Ryan said Monday. “So whose fault is [0-2] on? It’s on their defense!

“Their defense is supposed to be No. 1 in the league! If I was going to be the coordinator — I don’t know what the hell [he’s] doing now — that’s who’s letting this team down. It’s their defense. It’s not the offense.”

It’s interesting that Ryan has made these comments publicly because he was a candidate for the team’s defensive coordinator job after Sean Payton was hired as head coach. Payton also interviewed Vic Fangio, but the team ultimately hired Joseph.

Under Joseph, Denver’s defense has allowed an average of 26 points per game through two weeks. Such an average would have ranked third-worst in the NFL last season.

“I think it’s fixable,” Ryan said. “We just have got to get that defense playing to what the expectations were. Because when I saw the talent they had on that defense, I’m like, there’s no reason why this shouldn’t be the top defense in the league.”

If the Broncos eventually part ways with Joseph, Ryan might be a name to keep an eye on given his comments on Monday.

Rex Ryan putting AFC East on notice after Aaron Rodgers joins Jets

Former Jets coach Rex Ryan is pounding his chest after the Aaron Rodgers trade.

The New York Jets’ acquisition of former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has Rex Ryan sending a message to the AFC East, including the New England Patriots.

Of course, Ryan has a history with the Jets. He was the head coach of the organization from 2009-2014. The Jets finished in second place in the AFC East twice and went to back-to-back AFC championship games. The 2010 appearance came after a divisional playoff win against the Patriots by a 28-21 score.

Now, the Jets appear to be reloading with Rodgers in the fold. They also have a formidable wide receiver room with Garrett Wilson, Corey Davis and Rodgers’ old friend, Allen Lazard, leading the way.

To be fair, the Patriots have loaded up on playmakers of their own. JuJu Smith-Schuster and tight end Mike Gesicki were two of the more notable additions. Nevertheless, the Jets are certainly a formidable foe.

Ryan seemed giddy about this on Tuesday’s episode of “Get Up!”.

“Watch out, everybody. Here come the Jets. Here come the Jets,” said Ryan, as transcribed by NESN.com’s Adam London. “We haven’t had this type of quarterback since, maybe, ever — since (Joe) Namath. This is it. This is the missing piece for the New York Jets right here. Guess what, all you fans of the AFC East? It ain’t no fun when the rabbit’s got the gun. We got the gun right now. It is on. Our defense is better than yours, our quarterback’s better than yours. It is on. This is a great move right here. … They are going for it and they should. They have a playoff-caliber defense and now you got the quarterback. Watch out, the entire National Football League. We just put you on notice, and guess what? We’re gonna kick your butt. Here we go, Jets.”

The acquisition of Rodgers certainly puts New England in a difficult spot, as the AFC East features talented quarterbacks on all opposing teams. Rodgers will be looking to provide a spark to the Jets after throwing for 3,695 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in his final season in Green Bay.

Broncos coaching staff update: Strength coach hired, QBs coaches interview

The Broncos interviewed Greg Olson (not to be confused with Greg Olsen) as a QBs coach, hired a strength coach, and lost their WRs coach.

Slowly but surely, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton has been building his new coaching staff at Dove Valley.

The latest addition to the staff is Dan Dalrymple as the team’s new strength and conditioning coach, according to a report from NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill. Dalrymple previously held the same role with the New Orleans Saints under Payton.

Elsewhere on the coaching front, the Broncos recently interviewed Greg Olson (not to be confused with Greg Olsen) and Kerry Joseph for the quarterbacks coach position, according to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports. Olson has since been hired by the Seattle Seahawks as a QBs coach.

Denver will also need to find a new wide receivers coach after Zach Azzanni left the team to join the New York Jets in a lateral move, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. Azzanni, who coached the Broncos’ WRs over the last five seasons, will reunite with Nathaniel Hackett, who is now the offensive coordinator in New York.

Denver’s own offensive coordinator position remains unfilled, but it’s not a crucial hire for the Broncos given that Payton will run the offense. The team’s defensive coordinator job will be a crucial hire, though, and Denver has several candidates.

Vance Joseph, who has already interviewed with the Broncos, is scheduled to interview with the Philadelphia Eagles on Wednesday and Thursday, according to KMGH-TV’s Troy Renck.

In addition to Joseph, Rex Ryan is also a DC option for Denver, as are Kris Richard, Mike Zimmer and in-house candidate Christian Parker.

We are tracking all of the Broncos’ coaching staff moves on this page.
