It would have been easy for Notre Dame to pack it in against No. 13 Louisville after shooting 31 percent from the field in the first half, including 2 of 13 from 3-point range. Instead, after trailing by as much as 16, the Irish roared back in the second half to lead by as much as four. But the Cardinals went back out in front and ultimately hung on, 67-64.

The Irish (10-6, 1-4) had a chance to send the game to overtime after John Mooney stole the ball with 37 seconds left. After they took their time looking for a good shot, Prentiss Hubb was short on a close layup. Nate Laszewski got the offensive rebound, but Mooney had to force a desperation corner 3 as time expired. It didn’t fall, and the Cardinals (13-3, 4-1) were victorious.

Mooney had his 10th double-double of the season with 15 points and 19 rebounds. T.J. Gibbs also scored 15. Dane Goodwin came off the bench and contributed 14 points, including four 3-pointers. Rex Pflueger scored six in his first game back from a knee injury.

Desperate to get in the win column for ACC play, Notre Dame found itself in a contest with Syracuse on Saturday in which the lead changed 18 times. Whenever one team gained momentum, the other would take it right back. Ultimately, it was the Irish coming out on top in a wild contest, 88-87, for their first conference win of the year.

John Mooney (28 points, 14 rebounds) broke an 84-all tie with 39.7 seconds left when he got his own rebound off a miss and laid the ball back up and in. It gave Notre Dame the lead for good.

Prentiss Hubb (22 points, nine assists) made it 88-84 with two free throws, and Syracuse struggled to hit a 3-pointer on their final possession. Joseph Girard III finally knocked down a trey with 0.4 seconds left, but by then, the Irish only had to inbound the ball successfully to finish the win. Girard tried to draw a foul on his shot for a potential four-point play, but it was ruled a flop.

T.J. Gibbs scored 21 points for the Irish with all of his field goals coming on 3s. Rex Plueger was involved with a collision that aggravated his surgically-repaired left knee and didn’t play in the second half. However, he wasn’t about to let that diminish his postgame enthusiasm.

Drawing a tough Indiana team in the annual Crossroads Classic, Notre Dame could have let itself get smoked. Instead, it hung in until the very end and nearly won it. However, it’s unlikely anyone on the team is thinking of this as anything but a 62-60 loss.

Notre Dame (8-4) turned a 17-point deficit into a five-point lead with 3:42 left. But Armaan Franklin made two 3-pointers after that, including one that gave Indiana (11-1) the lead with 15.7 seconds left. John Mooney missed a game-tying layup, and Rex Pflueger was unable to connect on a half-court shot at the buzzer.

Mooney tied for the team lead in scoring with Dane Goodwin for 15 points and had a double-double with 10 rebounds. Nate Laszewski met the bare minimum for a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Juwan Durham added 11 points.

Already ravaged by injuries to their rotation, the Irish momentarily suffered another blow when T.J. Gibbs went back to the locker room in the first half clutching his left leg. Though he returned before halftime, he appeared bothered by the leg while on the floor. Pfluger also was bitten by the injury bug with a sore groin before going back into the game a short time later.

Watch – Notre Dame Basketball Routed at No. 3 Maryland

The first half particularly was challenging for the Irish, who made only eight field goals and shot 1 for 11 from 3-point range.

Despite keeping pace early with No. 3 Maryland, Notre Dame found itself on the short end of a 19-7 run to end the first half and never recovered in a 72-51 road loss Wednesday.  The Irish (6-2) began this ACC/Big Ten Challenge matchup by jumping out to a five-point lead in the first five minutes.  They kept pace for another 11 minutes, tying the game at 13 before the Terrapins (9-0) blew it open and never looked back, leading by as much as 27 in the second half.  The Irish dropped to 4-3 all-time in the annual challenge between the two power conferences.

Jalen Smith led the Terrapins with a double-double of 15 points and 16 rebounds to go with five blocks.  Eric Ayala scored 14, and Aaron Wiggins had 11, two of which came on a thunderous put-back dunk of his own shot to end the first half.  The Terrapins never allowed the Irish to get into a shooting rhythm, limiting the guests to 29 percent from the field.  The first half particularly was challenging for the Irish, who made only eight field goals and shot 1 for 11 from 3-point range.

John Mooney continued to be Notre Dame’s most dependable player, achieving his fifth double-double of the season with a game-high 17 points and 12 rebounds.  Prentiss Hubb matched Mooney’s team highs of five field goals and three 3-pointers, finishing with 13 points and leading the Irish with three assists.  Rex Pflueger was held scoreless, missing both of his 3-point attempts, and committed a game-high five turnovers.  It was a surprising off night for Pflueger, who has enjoyed a balanced season to this point.

The Irish were unable to keep up with the quicker Terrapins, who held a 15-7 advantage in fast break points.  They also outscored the Irish in points in the paint, 36-22.

With time winding down Notre Dame’s Robby Carmody went down with what appeared to be a significant knee injury and initial reports do not sound good for the Irish sophomore guard.

The Irish return to action Saturday when they host a struggling Boston College squad.
