Amari Cooper injured ribs vs Chargers, Randy Gregory expected back from COVID list

Amari Cooper will be re-evaluated Wednesday as the Cowboys prep for MNF; Randy Gregory is expected to be cleared to practice by then. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Cowboys fans got a scare when wide receiver Amari Cooper remained down on the SoFi Stadium turf after a 12-yard catch in the game’s final minute. Dallas was forced to take a timeout as Cooper was helped off the field; he did not return, as Greg Zuerlein connected on a 56-yard game-winning field goal as time expired three plays later.

Those same fans- and the team- may be able to breathe a slight sigh of relief after an update on Cooper’s status was provided Monday. Head coach Mike McCarthy said Cooper suffered bruised ribs, and that he’ll have an extra day of rest this week, thanks to the team’s next game coming on Monday night.

Cooper apparently took a shot to the ribs during Week 1’s game in Tampa, landing on another player’s facemask. He tallied three catches for 24 yards before re-aggravating the injury on Sunday.

“We’ll see Wednesday how he feels,” McCarthy said per the team website, with players scheduled to do just a walkthrough that day before starting their normal game practice on Thursday.

Wide receiver Michael Gallup is already on injured reserve with a calf injury. Cedrick Wilson started in Gallup’s spot; should Cooper be unable to play versus Philadelphia in Week 3, Noah Brown would likely get the nod.

McCarthy revealed that both defensive tackle Carlos Watkins and defensive end Dorance Armstrong are also dealing with new injuries from Sunday, a knee sprain and an ankle sprain, respectively.

Defensive end Randy Gregory, who was placed on the Reserve/COVID list last Monday, is expected to be cleared to return to practice by the middle of the week.

Randy Gregory added to Cowboys’ COVID list as Martin, Knight activated

If he stays asymptomatic, Randy Gregory must produce 2 consecutive negative tests 24 hours apart to have a chance to play in Week 2. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Another week, another batch of personnel shuffling on the Cowboys roster due to COVID-19.

Defensive end Randy Gregory has tested positive for the virus and is being placed on the Reserve/COVID list, as per Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. According to Gehlken’s report, Gregory is asymptomatic, meaning he needs to stay that way and have two consecutive negative tests within 24 hours apart in order to be cleared to play in Week 2 against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Right guard Zack Martin, who missed the season opener last week due to COVID protocol, has now been activated off that watchlist and was back in the team facility on Monday, along with offensive lineman Brandon Knight.

Dorance Armstrong is listed as the primary backup behind Gregory and is coming off a solid performance versus Tampa Bay. Chauncey Golston, the rookie from Iowa who made the 53-man roster despite starting training camp on the PUP list and missing most everything since, is expected to start working back into practice this week.

‘Don’t hold out for that:’ Cowboys’ Zack Martin not ruled out yet, but even Jerry Jones knows truth

Dallas coach Mike McCarthy and owner Jerry Jones say there is a chance Zack Martin could come off the COVID list, but admit it’s slight. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy was asked Monday about the possibility that starting right guard Zack Martin could come off the Reserve/COVID list in time to suit up against Tampa Bay on Thursday night. The coach left the door cracked, albeit ever so slightly.

Team owner, eternal optimist, and consummate salesman Jerry Jones, though, lives in that crack: where everything will magically work out simply because it would be a better story if it did.

The two men are saying the same thing about the All-Pro’s status. It just sounds very different depending on who says it.

“I would say he’s as close to being out as you can possibly rule out,” McCarthy told reporters during a pre-practice news press conference Monday. “There’s a protocol, so we’ll follow protocol for the game.”

The protocol says that Martin, as a vaccinated player displaying actual COVID symptoms, would first have to go symptom-free for 48 hours. Then he would have to receive two negative tests 24 hours apart.

And all of that has to happen before Martin can even get on the plane to Tampa.

Do the math. Even if Martin woke up completely symptom-free on Monday, time has already come awfully close to running out.

But there is, technically speaking, still a chance. And that’s all Jerry Jones needs to make a few waves.

Appearing on ESPN’s First Take with Stephen A. Smith and Cowboys legend Michael Irvin, Jones started by stating the seriousness of the team losing its best player in Martin, continued by praising the play of Martin’s replacement in Connor McGovern, and then went right into speculating about Martin’s sudden recovery… all in the same sentence.

“You can tell I’m talking myself into it,” the 78-year-old owner admitted, “because this is unfortunate. Working real hard. I’m still the guy that wants… he’s going to be tested right up until gametime. Maybe we can get a couple of negative tests out of him. I’m always looking for that pony in there somewhere.”

With that oddly-placed pony-racing reference, Jones was ready to switch topics. In fact, he had started to move on when Irvin asked him to hold his horses and definitively confirm there was a chance Martin could play in the season opener.

“Well, if he can test two negatives,” Jones said. “If he can get two negatives in the next couple of days, then he could play.”

And then, perhaps realizing he had oversold something he knows deep down won’t be delivered, Jones backtracked on the spin job.

“Don’t hold out for that. Don’t hold out for that.”

And then he quickly segued to the joke he had been trying to make all along, a diss on noted Cowboys-hater Smith.

While the headlines will trumpet that Jones thinks Martin might play Thursday- and technically speaking, he still could– what Jones actually said shows that he, along with everybody else in the organization, assumes he won’t.

“It’s disappointing, but you can’t harp on it, can’t let it be more than what it is,” running back Ezekiel Elliott said per ESPN’s Todd Archer. “I mean, definitely going to miss him, definitely wish he was out there, but we still have a game to go play, and we’ve got to try and get the job done.”

Elliott. McCarthy. Even Jones. They all sound resigned to Martin sitting out.

But until it’s made official, Cowboys fans can continue to cling to a faint glimmer of hope. Jerry Jones has become a master at selling those.

Cowboys RG Zack Martin ruled out of season opener vs Bucs due to positive Covid result

The Cowboys’ best player will be sidelined in the season opener due to a covid test. With Vita Vea and Ndamakong Suh on deck, Dallas’ chances to protect Dak Prescott are dwindling. | From @KDDrummondNFL

The Dallas Cowboys avoided major injury throughout the offseason, working carefully around minor dings and recoveries from offseason surgery. Yet, when they take the field on Thursday to begin their 2021 campaign against the defending World Champion Buccaneers, it will be without their best player.

Right guard Zack Martin is being ruled out of the road opener on Thursday night due to a positive Covid-19 test result. Tampa Bay presents a formidable defensive front including Vita Vea and Ndamakong Suh on the interior. The Cowboys will somehow have to figure out how to protect Dak Prescott without their best blocker.

The Cowboys are still currently without WR Noah Brown, who was one of five players still on the Reserved/Covid list at roster cutdowns. LG Connor Williams was activated today. Guard Brandon Knight has been identified as a close contact of Martin and has also been added to the list.

With Williams set to return to his spot as starting left guard, Connor McGovern will once again replace Martin in the starting lineup between center Tyler Biadasz and right tackle La’el Collins, who is returning to practice Sunday after dealing with a neck stinger for the last week or so.

Martin played in a career-low 10 games last season as the offensive line went through a myriad of ailments up and done the group. His going to the Reserve/Covid list means there will be a spot open on the 53-man roster (and game-day roster) for his replacement.

UDFA Braylon Jones may be the only current guard on the practice squad who would be eligible to replace Martin and Knight on the depth chart.

Some clarity may be needed to know whether or not Isaac Alarcon could be added. He is on the PS but as an International Pathway exception and for those players to become an official member of the 53-man roster need to relinquish their exception and then remain there for three weeks.

Whether or not a team can use one of each player’s two temporary call ups to the game day roster during that three-game stint has not be defined in the public statement regarding the rule change.

Falcons CB A.J. Terrell placed on reserve/COVID list, out for Sunday’s game vs. Bears

Falcons rookie cornerback A.J. Terrell has been placed on the reserve/COVID list, and he won’t play Sunday against the Bears.

The Chicago Bears continue to catch breaks with opponent injuries.

With the Atlanta Falcons already reeling from a laundry list of injuries, they suffered another defensive loss heading into Sunday’s game against the Bears.

Falcons rookie cornerback A.J. Terrell has been placed on the reserve/COVID list, and he won’t play Sunday against the Bears. Terrell becomes the first NFL player this season to miss a game due to COVID-19 reasons.

Terrell’s positive COVID-19 test came back overnight, and no one else was positive. Those individuals were tested this morning and the results will come back early Sunday morning, so this is a situation worth monitoring.

The Falcons defense has had its share of struggles through two games this season, as they’re allowing 39 points per game (1st in NFL) and 372 passing yards per game (2nd in NFL). Now with he loss of Terrell, it’s not going to get any better, even against a Bears offense that has yet to put together a complete game.

The Bears and Falcons kick things off at noon CT tomorrow on FOX.
