Chiefs release DE Demone Harris from practice squad

The #Chiefs have released DE Demone Harris from the practice squad ahead of Week 8.

The Kansas City Chiefs have cleared a spot on their practice squad ahead of Week 8.

According to the NFL’s personnel notice on Monday, the practice squad contract of DE Demone Harris has been terminated by the Chiefs. Harris first joined Kansas City as a late-season addition in 2019 when he was signed to the team from the Baltimore Ravens practice squad. He spent the remainder of that season on the 53-man roster through Super Bowl LIV. He signed a reserve/future deal with the team and joined the Chiefs’ practice squad for the majority of the 2020 NFL season.

The team protected Harris on the practice squad as recently as last week. He has been protected a total of four times since Week 2. The 25-year-old appeared in two games for Kansas City in 2021, with standard elevations from the practice squad in Weeks 5 and 6, playing 17 total snaps on defense. He recorded no official statistics in those 17 snaps with the team.

After his two standard elevations, Harris would now be subject to waivers were the Chiefs to elevate him to the 53-man roster again. Last week, the team signed former Las Vegas Raiders draft pick Shilique Calhoun to the practice squad, presumably because they knew they’d need another option to elevate on the defensive line with Austin Edwards and Cortez Broughton being the only other defensive linemen on the practice squad. Should injuries or COVID-19 strike, there’s always a possibility that Harris is back with the team either on the practice squad or 53-man roster in the future.

New Orleans Saints to release veteran backup RB Latavius Murray

The New Orleans Saints released veteran backup RB Latavius Murray, opening a roster spot for CB Desmond Trufant:

We expected the New Orleans Saints to sign free agent cornerback Desmond Trufant after a successful tryout, but the corresponding roster move is a little surprising. ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported that the Saints will release backup running back Latavius Murray on Tuesday, which was confirmed by NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill.

It’s surprising because Murray had played well in his first few years with New Orleans, and the decision to keep him during final roster cuts last week suggested the Saints thought he still had something left to give. Schefter adds that the Saints approached Murray about a pay cut, but he declined — which makes sense considering how few slices of the pie are left to go around just days before the season starts. It’s a shame the Saints didn’t get a draft pick or any other compensation before letting Murray go, but his poor performance in preseason likely quieted any interest.

So now Murray will go looking for a new team. Maybe he ends up following the path of the player he replaced by signing with Mark Ingram’s old Baltimore Ravens squad, which has dealt with a rash of injuries at the position in recent weeks. There are other openings around the league.

As for New Orleans: it’s the Tony Jones Jr. show behind Alvin Kamara. They also have Dwayne Washington and Ty Montgomery on the roster if more backs are needed down the line. Cutting Murray at this point saves more than $3.1 million in salary cap, but it remains to be seen what Trufant signed for, which help balance that out. Stay tuned for additional roster moves in the days ahead.

Former Seahawks center Justin Britt felt ‘unwanted’ in Seattle

Former Seahawks starting center Justin Britt told reporters he felt “unwanted” in Seattle and will now get his shot with the Houston Texans.

The Seattle Seahawks said goodbye to their starting center Justin Britt before the start of last season, releasing the long-time starter in April 2020. Britt then sat out the year before signing with the Houston Texans this March.

The center opened up to Houston reporters via Zoom last week about his departure from the Seathawks.

“I felt, leaving Seattle, I felt unwanted, but like they were good to me,” Britt said May 20 via the Texans Wire. “I enjoyed my time there and the friendships I made and playing with Russ (Wilson), I’m forever grateful for that.”

Seattle decided to go in a different direction from Britt last season opting to go with Ethan Pocic as the starter. Britt himself will now get another shot at making a starting lineup with a new team.

“You pull up to the stadium and know that this is where I work,” Britt explained. “It’s incredible. It took maybe a couple of weeks to get used to things, but I think everyone in the building does a really good job of making people feel like they’ve been here.”

Seahawks defensive tackle Jarran Reed expected to be released

Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Jarran Reed is expected to be released after the team was unable to locate a suitable trade partner.

Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Jarran Reed is expected to be released after the team was unable to locate a suitable trade partner.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport tweeted the news Friday afternoon.

“After spending much of today attempting to trade DT Jarran Reed, source said it’s looking like a release for the #Seahawks starting DT,” Rapoport wrote. “Rare for a free agent of this caliber to be available now, but extenuating circumstances.”

The possibility of Seattle parting ways with Reed surfaced on Thursday, so some sort of impending move was expected.

Because of the decreased salary cap this season, clubs like the Seahawks are having to make some difficult decisions and it looks like Reed is going to be one of the latest victims.

Chiefs to release RB Damien Williams

The Chiefs say goodbye to one of their heroes from the Super Bowl LIV win.

The Kansas City Chiefs are set to release one of the heroes of their Super Bowl LIV victory.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Chiefs are releasing RB Damien Williams. Kansas City Star beat writer Herbie Teope confirmed the report. Williams first joined the Chiefs as a free agent back in 2018, but his role was limited until they’d released former starting RB Kareem Hunt. He would be a major part of the Chiefs’ postseason run in 2018, scoring touchdowns against both the Indianapolis Colts in the divisional round and New England Patriots in the AFC title game.

In 2019, Williams was named starting running back by offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy before training camp. He’d ultimately split work with LeSean McCoy early on, but separated himself late in the season, appearing in 11 games, rushing for 498 yards and five touchdowns on 111 carries. In Super Bowl LIV, Williams scored the go-ahead touchdown and the touchdown that ultimately won the game for the team.

Williams opted out of the 2020 NFL season to take care of his mother, who was diagnosed with cancer. In total, Williams will finish his Chiefs career with 1,127 scrimmage yards on 214 touches with 13 total touchdowns. He added another 10 touchdowns in the postseason, which is currently a franchise postseason record for touchdowns scored.

The release will save the Chiefs roughly $2.1 million in salary-cap space, some of which the team probably used today to re-sign RB Darrel Williams. That move signaled that something might be coming with Damien and now we know that to be true.

Report: Saints expected to release DT Malcom Brown

The New Orleans Saints expect to free up about $5 million in cap space by releasing nose tackle Malcom Brown in a salary cap-minded move.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbyahgz6p2j3xp7 player_id=none image=https://saintswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

NFL insider Josina Anderson reported Friday that the New Orleans Saints intend to terminate their contract with starting nose tackle Malcom Brown, saving nearly $5 million against the salary cap. This wasn’t entirely unexpected; Brown’s name popped up in trade talks recently, but between teams over-valuing their draft picks and under-valuing good run defenders like Brown, it was probably difficult for the Saints to cut a deal.

Still, it’s a tougher loss than it appears on the surface. Brown was a force in the middle of the Saints defensive line, and the unit noticeably stepped back when he wasn’t available against the Philadelphia Eagles (snapping their 55-game streak of games played without allowing a 100-yard rusher). It won’t be easy to replace him, and the problem is compounded if veteran defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins leaves in free agency.

That’s not to say the Saints don’t have options. David Onyemata has developed into one of the sport’s better interior defenders. Young backups Shy Tuttle and Malcolm Roach have earned more minutes. But moving on from both Brown and Rankins in the same offseason creates a void of experience that no one on the roster is positioned well to replace.

Brown initially signed a three-year, $15 million contract with the Saints as a New England Patriots free agent back in 2019. He appeared in 29 regular season games and 3 playoff games, all starts. Just 27 years old, it shouldn’t take long for him to land on his feet.
