Miami Dolphins make change on their 2020 practice squad at quarterback

It seems as though the Miami Dolphins will take the approach that if their charged with working down the depth chart to QB3, they’ll have bigger problems at hand than who is taking snaps at quarterback. After initially deciding to release young QB Josh Rosen, the Dolphins brought back young QB Jake Rudock thanks to his familiarity with the system. But now Rudock is also on the outs — he’s been released from Miami’s practice squad. Miami still has quarterbacks Ryan Fitzpatrick and Tua Tagovailoa on the active roster, but the team’s third quarterback will be a fresh face.

Undrafted rookie quarterback Reid Sinnett, who ironically enough was serving as the Buccaneers practice squad quarterback before the team signed Rosen in the aftermath of Miami’s decision to cut the third-year quarterback, will now serve as Miami’s practice squad signal caller.

Sinnett was a one-year starter for the University of San Diego Toreros in 2019, finishing 11th in the voting for the Walter Payton Award (FCS’ equivalent of the Heisman Trophy) and posting some impressive numbers — he completed 67% of his passes for 3,528 yards, 32 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while rushing for an additional six scores. The Dolphins must see a greater developmental ceiling with Sinnett than they did was Rudock, who at this point is a low-end player from a physical traits perspective and won’t move the needed with his ceiling as a player. And, given Rudock’s lack of market the last time he was available, he may be “on call” for the Dolphins should something happen to Tagovailoa or Fitzpatrick throughout the course of the season. If Rudock latches on somewhere else? Oh well and good for him — but the Dolphins seem to have seen enough to feel comfortably that he’s not the answer they’re looking for as a bottom of the roster quarterback.

A look at the UDFAs for the Buccaneers

Here is a list of the confirmed undrafted free agents the Buccaneers have signed.

The Buccaneers came away from the NFL draft last week as big winners after landing offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs, who Mel Kiper calls an “instant-impact rookie.”

While the Bucs selected seven players in the draft, they didn’t stop working once Mr. Irrelevant was announced. Jason Licht and the Bucs went out and signed a number of undrafted free agents, including University of San Diego QB Reid Sinnett. Bruce Arians said the team didn’t draft a developmental quarterback because they were going to sign an undrafted one with plenty of upside. Sinnett threw for 32 touchdowns and 10 interceptions last season, and will now have the chance to sit and learn behind Tom Brady (oh yeah, and Blaine Gabbert).

Here is the complete list of confirmed UDFAs for the Bucs:

Hurst is a 6-foot-2 receiver out of the University of West Georgia and Pearson is a 6-foot-4 receiver from Jacksonville State. Both are big-bodied wideouts, but will be joining an already crowded receiving group. Still, when you are looking to give Tom Brady the best shot at winning, you do your due diligence and leave no stone unturned. That includes combing through the undrafted free agent market.

Get to know the Bucs’ new undrafted QB Reid Sinnett

The Buccaneers opted to sign an undrafted free agent rather than draft one, and that player turned out to be Reid Sinnett.

Before Tom Brady signed with the Buccaneers, some early mock drafts had Tampa Bay taking a quarterback in round one of the 2020 NFL draft. But with Brady on board, the team’s priorities shifted and they went with an offensive tackle in round one in Iowa’s Tristan Wirfs.

But the Bucs had other rounds to find an eventual successor to Brady, but came away from the weekend without drafting another signal-caller. Bruce Arians said there was a reason the team didn’t draft a developmental QB, because they planned to sign an undrafted one with plenty of upside.

That quarterback turned out to be Reid Sinnett out of the University of San Diego. The redshirt senior stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 225 pounds, so sounds like the perfect Bruce Arians quarterback. In 12 games last season, Sinnett threw for 3,538 yards, 32 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Sinnett was a finance major and was also recruited by Ivy League schools (Harvard, Penn, Yale) as well as Kansas.

Check out highlights below from Sinnett’s win over Harvard last year, where he threw for 384 yards and three touchdowns.

Report: Chiefs had video conference with sleeper QB prospect Reid Sinnett

The Kansas City Chiefs will leave no stone unturned during the pre-draft process, meeting with a sleeper QB prospect out of the FCS.

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to make the rounds in the pre-draft process, speaking with a variety of prospects.

While the quarterback room in Kansas City is looking plentiful, you can never have too many players at the position. The Chiefs haven’t shown much interest in this quarterback class, but it appears they’re doing some work on a sleeper prospect. According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the Chiefs are among the eight teams that had video conferences with San Diego QB Reid Sinnett.

You might not have heard much about Sinnett, but the redshirt senior was one of the top passers in the FCS during 2019. He completed 66.9 percent of his passes for 3,528 yards, 32 touchdowns and had just 10 interceptions on the season. He also added another 174 yards and six touchdowns on the ground.

The 6-4 225-pound QB was named team captain and a starter in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl for the National team. Sinnett jumped onto the scene with a strong week of practice and drew strong praise from head coach Marvin Lewis and QB coach Jeff Blake.

There was hope that he’d continue his strong pre-draft process with a Pro Day, but alas, it was canceled amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Ultimately he settled for a videotaped throwing session with his teammate Michael Bandy.

It’s easy to see the fit of Sinnett in Kansas City. He’s a smart and patient passer that doesn’t turn the ball over too often. He does a good job throwing on the move and picks up hidden yards on the ground. While Sinnett is a longshot to be drafted, he’s the type of guy who could come in as an undrafted free agent and turn some heads.
