Urban Meyer says Jags’ offensive struggles vs. Colts are on the unit as a whole, not a single individual

After going over the game film, Meyer says the Jags had various issues that hurt them on offense and there wasn’t one player in particular that the loss falls on.

Fans came into Week 10 hoping that the Jacksonville Jaguars could acquire their first winning streak since 2019, but that was not the case. A big reason for that is because the team got off to a slow start and found themselves down by a score of 17-0 within the first three possessions.

The first few offensive possessions were particularly brutal as the Jags’ offense started the game with two three-and-outs and wasn’t in sync. This left many fans to wonder if those issues fell on the man behind center in Trevor Lawrence, as he’s struggled since the bye and hasn’t looked like the player fans saw Weeks 4-6.

However, Jags coach Urban Meyer shut those speculations down quickly by saying that the offensive unit as a whole was an issue.

“Of course, that thing gets time-tested, and I would be surprised if anyone ever said something different,” Meyer said. “Sure, people have off days, but when you struggle like we struggled in the first half, it’s certainly not a player and it’s certainly not a quarterback. And same thing when someone plays great—the first thing I always usually do is talk about the offensive line or the receiver that made that player look great. So, I know that’s a little bit not what people want to hear, but that’s actuality when you really watch. We had six penalties on offense, six. We had guys make some mental errors, we had a sack that shouldn’t have been a sack, someone had a missed assignment at the receiver position and it turned out to be a sack. So, yes, I think that’s time-tested.”

Meyer is right about the Jags not doing Lawrence any favors early in the game, they had two offensive penalties (holding and a false start) in the first quarter and one in the second quarter (holding). Receiver Jamal Agnew (who scored the first touchdown for Jacksonville) also had a drop around the seven-minute mark in the first quarter that would’ve been a third-down conversion. Add things like that in with some misses on Lawrence’s part and the inability for the receivers to get separation at times, and you have an offense that’s simply out of sync aside from the run game.

Meyer, Lawrence, and the staff also understand that there are some things that the rookie needs to improve on, too, and the backbreaking fumble he had at the end of Sunday’s game is a prime example. For those reasons, Meyer told the media that Lawrence isn’t exempt from the team’s issues and has to get better along with his teammates.

“No, I say ‘we’ and he’s part of the ‘we.’ We have to play better,” Meyer added. “The encouraging thing is, the second half, there was—that was a recipe of getting your tail kicked in and it came back. On the road, tough crowd, very good team. I was talking to Amy [Palcic] walking down here—when you start getting for that game, you start looking at the team; that’s a very good team.”

After Sunday’s game, Lawrence himself admitted that his turnover stung after the game and also admitted that there were throws he wish he had back the week before against the Buffalo Bills, too. However, on Sunday he told the media that he wouldn’t spend too much time reflecting on it and was ready to move on to Week 11.

“I’m disappointed in myself. Frustrated,” Lawrence said, according to ESPN. “But I know how far we’ve come. You look back compared to the first couple weeks of the season, and it’s night and day of where we’re at. We’ve got a locker room full of guys, coaches and players that believe, and we’re on the right track, but this one hurts just because I’m frustrated in myself. Had a chance to go win the game and got to do that. I had no doubt we were going to win the game. The whole offense believed it. Just got to finish.”

Needless to say, the Jags’ offense will be putting in a lot of time towards getting the little details right this week. If that can translate to the field on Sunday against San Francisco, it would be huge as the defense has stepped up and needs their teammates on the opposite end to improve as well.

Good, bad, and ugly from the Jags’ loss to the Colts

Week 10 marked another disappointing loss for the #Jaguars, but stunningly it wasn’t because of the defense.

The Jacksonville Jaguars weren’t able to secure their first winning streak since 2019 on Sunday after falling to the Indianapolis Colts in a battle where they fought to the end. Ultimately, with the Jags surging late in the game, the Colts were able to do enough to hold them off and move to 4-4 after a 23-17 victory.

While the game put another figure in the loss column for the Jags (now 2-7), it wasn’t all bad for the Jags as we’ve seen with some of the losses of the past. At the same time, there were a lot of costly mistakes that could end up making the team better down the road if they look to correct them.

With that being the case, here are the good, bad, and ugly takeaways we came away with after assessing Sunday’s loss:

Jamal Agnew gets Jags on the board with longest WR rush in franchise history

Jamal Agnew continues to impress with his speed and got the Jags on the board after the team was previously struggling.

The Jacksonville Jaguars got off to a terrible start Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts and found themselves down 17-0 after just a few drives. With the offense struggling, they decided to get creative and put Jamal Agnew in the backfield — and it turned out to be the best decision of the day.

After taking a handoff from quarterback Trevor Lawrence, Agnew ran to the left of the formation and used his blazing speed to turn in a 66-yard rush for a touchdown. Unfortunately, the extra-point attempt afterward was missed, but the Jags at least got on the board and moved the score to 17-6.

Agnew made history with his touchdown as it marked the longest rush by a receiver in franchise history. It also was the longest rush by a receiver in the NFL since 2016, when Tyreek Hill was able to turn in a long rush, too.

Since the touchdown neither team has been able to score and the defenses have seemingly settled down. However, if the Jags can continue to be creative with Agnew, maybe they can change that trend sooner than later.

Jaguars inactives for Week 10 game vs. Colts

With Rudy Ford having a solid week against the Bills, CB Tre Herndon was listed as one of five inactives vs. the Colts.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have deemed five players inactive this week against the Indianapolis Colts and running back James Robinson isn’t among them. Multiple reporters revealed that he would be suiting up Sunday after being considered a game-time decision.

With Robinson set to go, the Jags decided to make running back Devine Ozigbo inactive this week. That means the Jags will have three active running backs when they take the field in Robinson, Carlos Hyde, and Dare Ogunbowale.

Joining Ozigbo on the inactive list are receiver Tyron Johnson, cornerback Tre Herndon, tight end Jacob Hollister, and pass rusher Jordan Smith.

The Jags added Johnson to their active roster before Week 1’s game against the Houston Texans, but when active he hasn’t been able to get going. They also signed receiver Laquon Treadwell off the practice squad, so making a receiver inactive makes sense if the Jags need depth elsewhere.

Herndon was listed with the inactives last week, and Rudy Ford flourished while mostly taking his snaps at the nickelback role. Additionally, coach Urban Meyer stated that he believed Herndon wasn’t 100% from the knee injury he sustained in the preseason, which also could be a reason they are holding him back.

At tight end, the Jags seem to really like the trio that is active in Chris Manhertz, Luke Farrell, and Dan Arnold. Arnold has established himself as the receiving threat of the bunch, while Manhertz and Farrell or more so utilized for their blocking ability. As a result, Hollister has been inactive for multiple weeks.

Lastly, with Jordan Smith, it appears the Jags simply believe the rookie needs more development. He has yet to be active in a game, but his time could come eventually down the road this season.

The Colts inactives for the game are as follows:

Jags RB James Robinson to play vs. Colts

After missing Week 9’s game against the Bills, James Robinson will suit up for the Jags this week against the Colts.

After missing Week 9’s game against Buffalo due to the heel injury he sustained Week 8 in Seattle, Jacksonville Jaguars running back James Robinson will play against the Indianapolis Colts. The news comes as Robinson was deemed a game-time decision and had to work out for the team before Week 10’s away game.

Robinson was limited in practice Thursday and Friday after being a game-time decision last week. He was listed as questionable on the final injury report as a result.

The Jags’ doctors were obviously encouraged enough by what they saw out of Robinson during his pregame work out and his addition to the offense is huge, though he may not be at 100%. The team has only scored 19 points the past two weeks and could use its top scorer in Robinson who has four touchdowns to his name this season with 482 yards.

Even with Robinson back, though, Urban Meyer said the plan will be to utilize Carlos Hyde, too. The team also has Dare Ogunbowale listed among its active players for Sunday’s game, so he will be the No. 3 option at running back while also contributing on special teams.

3 keys to a Jags victory vs. the Colts

A win vs. Indy would give the #Jaguars their first winning streak since 2019, and these three keys should lead to them ending that period Sunday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars haven’t had a winning streak in over a season, but that all could come to an end Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts. After stunning the league with arguably the upset of the NFL season, the Jags defeated the Buffalo Bills and will look to capitalize on their Week 9 momentum.

However, to get their second win in a row, they will have to travel to Indianapolis and defeat a hot Colts team that is looking to hit .500 and has won three of its last five games. With that being the case, it won’t be a cakewalk for the Jags, but Indianapolis is a beatable team if they do several things right.

Here are three keys that could lead to the Jags winning Sunday as they look for their first true road win of the season:

Report: Jags to make decision on James Robinson’s status after pre-game work out vs. Colts

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport provided an update on James Robinson’s status Sunday morning.

Just as he was last week, Jacksonville Jaguars running back James Robinson will be a game-time decision. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the second-year running back will work out before Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts. Then, once that’s completed, they will then decide on Robinson’s status.

Robinson was ruled questionable on the final injury report, and coach Urban Meyer said he was hoping to know about Robinson’s status after Friday’s practice or Saturday. However, it appears Robinson didn’t completely look comfortable whenever the Jags looked at him, though it may be an injury he can play through as Rapoport suggests.

Regardless of Robinson’s status, Meyer said the team had plans to utilize No. 2 running back Carlos Hyde alongside him. That indicated that Robinson likely wouldn’t be 100% from the injury, which he sustained Week 8 against the Seattle Seahawks after he was pushed out of bounds.

Hyde, who started last week, was able to accumulate 21 carries for 67 yards against the Buffalo Bills, which was good for a 3.2-yard average. Dare Ogunbowale was the No. 2 running back behind him and received a carry that only went for a yard.

With Robinson being the motor of the Jags’ defense, it would be huge to have him back, even if it’s on a limited basis. However, if the injury won’t allow him to focus on being at his best as he said on Thursday, holding him out one more week would be a smart decision.

Spread update: Jags now 9.5-point underdogs vs. Colts

The Jags were 10.5-point underdogs earlier this week, but are now 9.5-point underdogs.

The Jacksonville Jaguars haven’t had a winning streak since 2019, but Week 10’s game against the Indianapolis Colts will allow them to do so. After stunning the Buffalo Bills last Sunday, they will travel to Indy looking to make it two in a row, but they will do so as underdogs again as Tipico Sportsbook have them listed as 9.5-point underdogs.

That marks a one-point decrease after the Colts entered this week as 10.5-point favorites. There were also changes made to the money line as the Jags have a +340 figure after previously having a +380 figure there, and the Colts have a -475 figure after previously having a -450 figure.

Indianapolis Colts -9.5

Since our last spread update, the Jags announced that both left tackle Cam Robinson (back) and quarterback Trevor Lawrence (ankle) will be able to play. Both players exited last Sunday’s game with injuries, though Robinson sustained his in warmups and wasn’t allowed to play against the Bills. Meanwhile, Lawrence injured his ankle in the second quarter and was able to return a few plays later.

The only player questionable at this point is star running back James Robinson (heel). He was limited on Thursday and Friday, and if he showed enough progress during the latter date, the Jags could let him suit up.

The last time both teams faced each other was at the end of the 2020 regular season. Indy defeated the Jags by two touchdowns and the final score was 28-14.

Jacksonville’s offense will come into Sunday’s game looking to get going after putting up just 16 points in their last two games (seven Week 8 and nine Week 9). With that being the case, and Robinson’s status uncertain, it makes a lot of since that the Colts would be favored by more than a touchdown.

Jaguars final injury report for Week 10: RB James Robinson questionable vs. Colts

As Urban Meyer said, James Robinson surfaced on the final injury report for Week 10 as questionable after he was a limited participant in practice Friday.

As expected, Jacksonville Jaguars running back James Robinson (heel) was listed as questionable on the final injury report for Week 10’s game against the Indianapolis Colts. However, the good news is that no other players joined him in the status column.

Friday morning, Jags coach Urban Meyer provided the media with an update on Robinson, stating that the practice that followed his presser would be important for Robinson in terms of getting a read on his status. On Thursday, Robinson was limited and said he could still feel the injury when taking reps, but added that the team planned to monitor it on a day-to-day basis

If Friday marked a good day of practice for Robinson, it appears he’ll be able to go. However, Meyer said the team is expected to give Carlos Hyde reps alongside Robinson, so it seems like they won’t overwork the second-year rusher even if he can return.

The other big update that came from the injury report was the status of linebacker Myles Jack (knee). He didn’t practice on Wednesday and Thursday, but Meyer confirmed that he could’ve as the staff was choosing to be cautious with him. Jack was upgraded to full participation Friday and will play Sunday, giving the unit a player who is quite familiar with the Colts.

Offensive starters Cam Robinson (back) and Trevor Lawrence (ankle) were also upgraded to full participation after being limited on Wednesday and Thursday. Both sustained injuries last Sunday but were expected to play as their situations weren’t severe.

As for the Colts, cornerback Xavier Rhodes was ruled out and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner was ruled questionable. Despite his injury, Buckner said he was confident he would play Sunday, but if he is unable to go it would be huge for the Jags.

Behind Enemy Lines: Week 10 Q&A with Colts Wire

@KevinHickey11 of @TheColtsWire offered us a little intel on Indianapolis, who will come into Sunday’s game with three victories in their last four games.

After a huge win over the Buffalo Bills, the Jacksonville Jaguars will look to string together two in a row for the first time since 2019. However, to do that the team will have to win on the road (excluding their trip to London) for the first time this season as they look to stop a hot Indianapolis Colts team.

Like the Jags, the Colts didn’t get off to a fast start early this season losing four of their first five games. However, they won three of their last four afterward and are now a game away from .500.

Of course, since their last matchup against the Jags (which occurred last season), a lot has changed with their roster, including the addition of a new QB1. To get some intel on those changes and some information on how the season has gone, we sat down with Colts Wire editor Kevin Hickey this week.

Here are five questions he was able to answer about the 3-4 Colts, who are currently in second place within the AFC South:
