Lions release OLB Reggie Gilbert

Gilbert was signed in June but did not make it through the second week of Lions training camp

The Detroit Lions made a roster move after Wednesday’s practice session. The Lions have released outside linebacker Reggie Gilbert.

Gilbert signed with Detroit as a free agent prior to the June minicamp. The 28-year-old was hoping to catch on with his fifth NFL team, but he didn’t even make it through the second full week of training camp. Gilbert was not at practice on Tuesday and no explanation was given.

There is now just one No. 45 jersey in camp, belonging to fullback Jason Cabinda. Gilbert spent 2020 on the practice squad with both the Jaguars and Cardinals and has played with the Packers and Titans prior to that.

Gilbert’s release leaves one open spot on the 90-man roster.

Texans bring in DE Reggie Gilbert, DT Willie Henry for visits

The Houston Texans have brought in DT Willie Henry and DE Reggie Gilbert in for visits.

The Houston Texans aren’t finished looking at how to improve their roster with three games to go in the 2020 regular season.

On Thursday, the club brought in defensive tackle Willie Henry and defensive end Reggie Gilbert for visits.

Henry is a former Baltimore Ravens 2016 fourth-round pick who collected 36 combined tackles, 4.5 sacks, seven tackles for loss, and 12 quarterback hits in 17 career games for the AFC North club, three of which he started. In 2018, Henry’s season was derailed by a hernia surgery, and ultimately the Ravens released him at the end of the 2019 preseason. Henry recently played for the San Francisco 49ers, where he played four snaps in one game.

Gilbert is a 2016 undrafted free agent the Green Bay Packers kept on their roster for three seasons. The former Arizona Wildcat provided 40 combined tackles, five tackles for loss, 11 quarterback hits, two pass breakups, a fumble recovery, and 3.5 sacks in 18 games for Green Bay. In the 2019 preseason, Green Bay traded Gilbert to the Tennessee Titans for a 2020 seventh-round pick. Gilbert played in 11 games for Tennessee, starting in five of them, as he collected 22 combined tackles, a tackle for loss, three quarterback hits, a pass breakup, and 1.0 sack for the Titans.

The Texans are looking to beef up their defensive interior as Brandon Dunn was placed on injured reserve with a pelvic fracture after the club’s 36-7 loss to the Chicago Bears in Week 14.

Cardinals bring in Former Titans, Packers LB Reggie Gilbert for tryout

He played in 11 games and started five for the Titans in 2019, picking up one sack.

The Arizona Cardinals continue to look at options at outside linebacker after the season-ending injury to Chandler Jones. In addition to signing Isaiah Irving off the Denver Broncos practice squad, they also brought in another player for a tryout.

According to the NFL transactions list on Thursday, they had former Green Bay Packers and Tennessee Titans outside linebacker Reggie Gilbert in for a tryout.

Gilbert has played three seasons in the league, two with the Packers and last year with the Titans. He played in 11 games last season, starting five, and had 22 tackles and a sack.

In 29 career games, he had 4.5 sacks, six tackles for loss and 14 quarterback hits.

Titans place Vic Beasley on NFI list, waive Reggie Gilbert

The Titans placed Vic Beasley on the NFI list and waived Reggie Gilbert.

The Tennessee Titans announced a pair of roster moves with their outside linebackers on Tuesday.

According to Jim Wyatt of Titans Online, Vic Beasley was placed on the Non-Football Injury list (NFI), while Reggie Gilbert was waived with an injury designation.

It isn’t clear what injury Beasley is dealing with, but his failing a physical is yet another setback for one of the Titans’ biggest offseason acquisitions. Of course, Beasley also reported late to training camp, which started his Titans tenure off on the wrong foot.

Once Beasley passes his physical, he can be activated off the NFI list.

Gilbert, who was acquired in a trade with the Green Bay Packers last year for a 2019 sixth-round pick, played in 11 games (five starts) for the Titans last season. No details were given about what injury he’s dealing with, either.

Gilbert figured to have a shot to make the team’s initial 53-man roster out of training camp, although he faced stiff competition for a roster spot and snaps from guys like Derick Roberson and D’Andre Walker.

Is Titans’ Reggie Gilbert on the roster bubble going into training camp?

Reggie Gilbert is in danger of missing the cut on the Titans’ initial 53-man roster.

Last August, the Tennessee Titans acquired outside linebacker Reggie Gilbert in a trade with the Green Bay Packers that ultimately cost a sixth-round pick. He was then re-signed this offseason to a one-year deal.

However, his future with the team is anything but secure.

In 2019, the Titans carried five outside linebackers on their initial 53-man roster, and in 2020 the team already figures to have at least four roster locks at the position going into training camp.

That group consists of Harold Landry, Vic Beasley, Kamalei Correa and 2019 fifth-round pick, D’Andre Walker, who missed all of his rookie season with an injury but figures to be part of the equation regardless.

You could also make an argument that Derick Roberson is as close to a lock as you can get after he flashed his pass-rush skills at the end of last season with three sacks in the Titans’ last two regular season games, including two against the New Orleans Saints’ elite offensive line in Week 16.

With the Titans needing to see an improvement in the pass-rush this coming season, Roberson carries an advantage over Gilbert, who played a minimal role in his first season in Nashville as a run defense specialist.

Gilbert is facing an uphill battle in making the roster, and that’s a sentiment that ESPN’s Turron Davenport agrees with, as the he named Gilbert the one veteran who is on the roster bubble in Tennessee.

The Titans brought Gilbert back on a one-year deal after trading for him in 2019. Gilbert had a steady spot in Tennessee’s outside linebacker rotation, but he was a healthy scratch in the AFC Championship Game. The emergence of second-year outside linebacker Derick Roberson last season and return from injury of 2019 fifth-round draft pick D’Andre Walker could spell trouble for Gilbert. The Titans re-signed Kamalei Correa and agreed to a one-year deal with former Atlanta Falcons outside linebacker Vic Beasley, who, along with Harold Landry, will take most of the snaps. — Turron Davenport

Should Gilbert not make the cut, the Titans could look to trade him, but it isn’t clear if general manager Jon Robinson would be able to recoup the sixth-round pick he lost in the initial trade with Green Bay.

Gilbert would probably fetch no better than a seventh-round pick, however it’s far more likely he simply gets cut and hits the open market.

Titans agree to terms on 1-year deal with OLB Reggie Gilbert

The Titans have agreed to terms on a contract extension with Reggie Gilbert.

The Tennessee Titans have agreed to terms on a one-year contract extension  with outside linebacker Reggie Gilbert, according to the team.

The exact money figure is not yet know. Prior to reaching an agreement with Tennessee, Gilbert was set to become an exclusive rights free agent but is now locked into Nashville for 2020.

Gilbert was acquired last August in a trade with the Green Bay Packers in exchange for what turned out to be a 2020 sixth-round pick.

The former undrafted free agent out of Arizona played in 11 games (five starts) for the Titans in 2019, totaling one sack, three QB Hits, 22 combined tackles (one for loss) and one pass defensed.

Gilbert is the third Titans free agent that the team has re-upped with. Previously, the team re-signed wide receiver and return man Cameron Batson, as well as tight end Anthony Firkser, both to one-year deals.

The Titans now have 19 of their own free agents left to make decisions on.

Titans to lose 6th-round pick to Packers from Reggie Gilbert trade

The Tennessee Titans will lose their sixth-round pick to the Green Bay Packers from the Reggie Gilbert trade.

The Tennessee Titans acquired outside linebacker Reggie Gilbert from the Green Bay Packers last August to bolster their linebacker corps. in exchange for a conditional 2020 draft pick.

On Friday, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst told reporters that the pick will be a sixth-rounder, per Packers beat writer Wes Hodkiewicz.

The Titans were already down to six picks (their fourth-rounder goes to the Miami Dolphins via the Ryan Tannehill trade), but an initial report of the deal by ESPN’s Adam Schefter had the Titans giving up a seventh-rounder, so this news does come as somewhat of a surprise.

Instead of having one pick in each round except for the fourth, Tennessee will have no pick in the fourth or sixth round and two in the seventh, one of which comes via the Taywan Taylor trade with the Cleveland Browns.

Gilbert played in 11 games (five starts) for the Titans in 2019, totaling just one sack, three QB hits, and 22 combined tackles (one for loss). Gilbert is an exclusive rights free agent this offseason.
