Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Wednesday’s Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Boston Red Sox (3-8) and Tampa Bay Rays (5-6) continue their series Wednesday at 6:40 p.m. ET at Tropicana Field. We analyze the Red Sox-Rays betting odds and lines, with MLB picks and best bets.

As hosts, the Rays won Tuesday’s opener 5-1. These AL East rivals will each send a southpaw to the hill Tuesday.

Red Sox at Rays: Projected starting pitchers

LHP Martin Perez at LHP Ryan Yarbrough

Perez doesn’t strike out many batters and has lived up to that reputation so far, falling to a 5.06 ERA in his first two starts; he’s failed to complete the sixth both times.

  • The southpaw, who spent most of his career with the Texas Rangers, holds a 6.75 ERA in 10 games (eight starts) against the Rays.
  • His struggles include an 8.39 ERA in five games (four starts) at Tropicana Field.

Yarbrough was better than his 4.13 ERA showed last year, but he’s not as good as his 1.54 ERA  from his first two appearances of 2020 (hint: just 5.4 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 — not a good K:BB).

  • Yarbrough actually was worse at home last season, enduring a 5.46 ERA in 12 starts.
  • More bad news: Yarbrough gave up 14 runs in 18 1/3 innings versus Boston last year, resulting in an ugly 6.87 ERA.

Prediction

Rays 8, Red Sox 7

Moneyline (ML)

  • Red Sox +125
  • Rays -139

I imagine this one will be determined by the bullpens, considering the stamina concerns with both starters. In that case, I’d certainly trust Tampa Bay’s stout ‘pen, anchored by righty Nick Anderson.

I’d lean with the Rays (-139), but I wouldn’t put too much on it.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Rays’ moneyline would return a profit of $7.19.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

  • Red Sox +1 (+121)
  • Rays -1 (+100)

My concerns about these starting pitchers prompt me to PASS on this run line, which doesn’t have much separation in return on investment between the favorite and underdog.

Over/Under (O/U)

  • Over 8.5 (-110)
  • Under 8.5 (-110)

Given the shortcomings of the two lefty starters; Boston’s track record of success against lefty pitchers; and Tampa Bay’s often deft platooning should light up the scoreboard. Plus, Rays OF Austin Meadows‘ return to the lineup has boosted my confidence. BET the OVER 8.5 (-110).

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Rays’ run line would return a profit of $9.09.

San Francisco Giants at Colorado Rockies odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s San Francisco Giants at Colorado Rockies sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

The San Francisco Giants (5-6) and Colorado Rockies (7-2) play the second game in a four-game series Tuesday at 8:40 p.m. ET at Coors Field. We analyze the Giants-Rockies betting odds and lines, with MLB picks and best bets.

Monday’s clash saw the Rockies prevail 7-6 — unfortunately marking a push for my Over 13 bet. My 8-7 Rockies prediction was on the right track for the Moneyline. Oops. Pressing on. …

Giants at Rockies: Projected starting pitchers

RHP Kevin Gausman at RHP German Marquez

Gausman’s role has waffled between starting and relieving in recent seasons, and that has carried into 2020.

  • His first appearance came in relief for four innings, and his first start went 4 1/3 frames. He gave up two and three runs, respectively, but rebounded in his start by striking out eight batters and walking none.
  • Against the Rockies, he has one career start in which he gave up five runs in five innings, but that came at SunTrust Park with the Braves.

Though he’s already out to a dazzling 1.54 ERA in his first two starts of 2020, Marquez is usually a safer bet on the road. He’ll make his 2020 home debut Tuesday.

  • He holds a 5.01 career ERA in Coors Field (3.64 elsewhere).
  • Marquez has wilted against the Giants with a 6.60 ERA against them in eight starts, including a 2 2/3-inning, 11-run disaster at home last July 15. However, he spun a one-hit, complete-game shutout on the road.

Prediction

Rockies 6, Giants 4

Moneyline (ML)

  • Giants +160
  • Rockies -176

I don’t believe in Gausman enough to tame Colorado in Colorado, nor do I love how heavily Colorado is favored. I’ll PASS on the Moneyline.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

  • Giants +1.5 (-125)
  • Rockies -1.5 (+105)

I’ll go against the grain of Marquez’s history and BET the red-hot Rockies -1.5 (+105).

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Rays’ run line would return a profit of $10.50.

Over/Under (O/U)

  • Over 11.5 (-110)
  • Under 11.5 (-110)

Oddly enough, the Giants are 6-3-2 on the O/U this season, while Colorado, the surging team, is 3-5-1.

The Giants’ Mike Yastrzemski is on a heater right now but is due to calm down — it could even happen in Denver. Colorado’s lineup looks tough to beat, but if Marquez continues his surprise performance — even at his tough home digs — I don’t see San Francisco piling up many runs.

No incentive to take either bet here. PASS on the Over/Under.

Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Boston Red Sox (3-7) visit the Tampa Bay Rays (4-6) to start a new series Tuesday at 6:40 p.m. ET at Tropicana Field. We analyze the Red Sox-Rays betting odds and lines, with MLB picks and best bets.

The AL East clubs start this key intradivisional series while both sitting below .500.

Red Sox at Rays: Projected starting pitchers

RHP Nathan Eovaldi at RHP Charlie Morton

Eovaldi tangles with the team that arguably saved his MLB career, and he has given up just three earned runs in 11 innings so far (2.45 ERA), though he’s struck out just eight batters in that window.

  • The righty holds a 4.40 ERA in nine outings (eight starts) at Tropicana Field, including 3.86 rate in 2018 when he split the season with Tampa Bay and Boston.
  • Eovaldi had just three appearances against the Rays last year, but he allowed 13 hits and three walks in 7 2/3 innings against them, slipping to a 7.04 ERA.

Morton rebounded from his four-inning, six-run 2020 debut by posting a passable five-inning, two-run, seven-strikeout start last Wednesday.

  • In 21 starts at the Trop, Morton has effectively held court with a 3.19 ERA in 21 starts, topped off with 175 strikeouts and just 33 walks over 127 innings.
  • Morton was serviceable in five starts against Boston last year; his 3.90 ERA and 2.7 BB/9, a bit higher than his normal performance, but he struck out 35 batters in 30 innings.

Prediction

Rays 5, Red Sox 3

Moneyline (ML)

  • Red Sox +125
  • Rays -139

Despite the negligible profit on the line, I much prefer to back Morton, so I’ll BET the RAYS (-139).

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Rays’ moneyline would return a profit of $7.19.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

  • Red Sox +1 (-125)
  • Rays -1 (+105)

Despite the lack of the half-run tacked onto the end of the run line, I’ll extend my confidence in Tampa Bay to the run line and BET the Rays -1 (+105).

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Rays’ run line would return a profit of $11.50.

Over/Under (O/U)

  • Over 8 (-110)
  • Under 8 (-110)

No incentive to take either. PASS on the Over/Under.
