The Michigan State hockey team just suffered a major blow

The Michigan State hockey team suffered a major blow this week as it was announced that team captain and star forward Red Savage will miss the rest of the season with an upper body injury.

Savage, who has 11 points on the year, missed the last three games with the injury as he explored his options. Savage was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the fourth round of the 2021 NHL Draft.

Michigan State hockey names captains for 2024-25 season

Michigan State hockey will be entering into the third year of the Adam Nightingale era in East Lansing, The team will be looking to replicate an outstanding season a year ago that saw the Spartans win a Big Ten championship and make an NCAA Tournament run.

The first step to the 2024-25 season is naming captains for the team, which the Spartans have just done.

Senior forward Red Savage will don the ‘C’ this year, with his alternate captains being junior forwards Karsen Dorwart and Tiernan Shoudy, along with junior defenseman Matt Basgall also donning the ‘A’.

The Spartans were very busy on the ice this summer.

A total of 11 Michigan State hockey players spent time this summer skating for the NHL teams during their development camps. The complete list of Spartans who skated at NHL development camps this summer can be found below (courtesy of Michigan State Hockey’s official X account):

Michigan State is coming off arguably its best season since the program won the National Championship in 2007. The Spartans are expected to again be a contender for the Big Ten title and return to the NCAA Tournament next year.

MSU is set to have six players on the roster that have been drafted into the NHL

Adam Nightingale has done an outstanding job retooling and rebuilding Michigan State’s roster after taking over for Danton Cole in 2022. It is evident in the way that the Spartans are accumulating NHL draft picks on the roster.

The Spartans are set to have six NHL draftees on their roster as they enter the 2023-24 season, which will be the second for Nightingale as the head man in East Lansing.

Michigan State hockey lands transfer commitment from Detroit Red Wings draftee

MSU has landed a huge commitment out of the transfer portal

Adam Nightingale has made another splash in the transfer portal, this time landing a commitment from Miami University forward Red Savage. Savage is a Northville, Michigan, native and was drafted in the fourth round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft by the Detroit Red Wings.

In his two years at Miami, Savage recorded 13 goals and 17 assists for 30 points in 67 games. He has also been a staple on the United States development program, wearing the stars and stripes.
