USA TODAY Sports’ Week 6 re-rank has Gators here

The Gators gained some ground with the Mizzou win but still didn’t crack the top 25.

Billy Napier and his Florida Gators finally earned their first Southeastern Conference win on Saturday against the Missouri Tigers. The illustrious achievement came on the school’s homecoming day after a pair of tough losses to the Kentucky Wildcats and Tennessee Volunteers earlier in the season.

Playing for pride on its home turf in front of an alumni-filled crowd, the Orange and Blue scored a 24-17 win over Mizzou in a game that once again left the Gator Nation feeling like there was still much to be desired. [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag] put up another mixed performance while the defense played just well enough to hold its opponents short in the final score; at least, the continued emergence of the ground attack was one of the more positive takeaways.

Still, the product on the field has not inspired a ton of confidence as the team gets deeper into the SEC schedule. The lack of an outstanding aspect of gameplay leaves the squad mired in mediocrity as exemplified by Florida’s exclusion from both of the latest major polls. USA TODAY Sports’ Paul Myerberg also agrees in his latest 1-131 re-rankings in which the Gators landed at No. 31 – up four spots from last week.

The SEC holds three of the top six spots with the Alabama Crimson Tide and Georgia Bulldogs ranked Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, while the Vols come in at No. 6. The two other conference schools in the top 25 are the Ole Miss Rebels and Mississippi State Bulldogs at Nos. 14 and 15, respectively.

Here’s where Florida landed in latest USA TODAY Sports re-rank

The Florida Gators are ranked outside the Top 25 in USA TODAY’s latest re-rank of all FBS college football teams after Week 5 of the season.

The Florida Gators are still outside the top 25 in USA TODAY Sports’s latest re-rank of all FBS college football teams. They come in at No. 35, an increase of three spots since the last re-rank.

The Gators had an up-and-down first half of the season. They came out of the gate swinging with an upset win over the defending Pac-12 champion Utah Utes in [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag]’s first game as Florida’s head coach. They went from unranked to No. 19 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll after the victory. They then lost to Kentucky and barely got a win over in-state rival USF, leaving them out of the top 25 entirely. Their close loss to Tennessee paired with their win over Eastern Washington caused expectations to stabilize.

The Gators will have plenty of opportunities to improve their positions for future re-ranks. They play LSU, Georgia, and Texas A&M in a four-week stretch, with the Georgia game being played in Jacksonville and the Texas A&M game being played in College Station.

Before that, Florida will have to get past Missouri on Saturday in the Swamp. Kickoff is scheduled for noon EDT. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.

Florida plummets in USA TODAY Sports college football re-rank

After falling to Tennessee, Florida dropped over 20 spots in the latest USA TODAY Sports NCAA Re-Rank

Florida still found itself inside the top 20 of the USA TODAY Sports NCAA re-rank after a narrow victory over USF a week ago, but falling to Tennessee in Week 4 sent the Gators plummeting down 21 spots to No. 38.

A lackluster showing on defense overshadowed a bounce-back week for Florida’s high-power offense and put the Gators at 2-2 overall and 0-2 against the SEC. Those numbers simply won’t compete for a top-25 ranking early in the season.

Unsurprisingly, Alabama and Georgia lead the way at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. Kentucky is the next highest-ranked SEC team at No. 8 and Tennessee rounds out the top 10 after moving up 13 spots with the home win. Florida obviously lost to both of those teams, so it’s a bit surprising to see the Gators punished so severely for losing to a pair of top-10 opponents by a combined 15 points. Utah, Florida’s Week 1 opponent is ranked No. 22 as well.

As far as the rest of the SEC, Texas A&M‘s victory over Arkansas on Saturday put the Aggies at No. 16 and the Razorbacks at No. 17. LSU is the only other SEC program ranked ahead of Florida at No. 32, and Mississippi State is just behind at No. 42.

Florida State, which UF has a matchup with at the end of the season, currently ranks 23rd in the nation, and UCF is also ahead at No. 36. If it’s any sort of silver lining, Miami dropped 22 spots (one more than Florida did) to No. 71 overall after an embarrassing loss to Middle Tennessee.

Florida falls in CBS Sports’ Week 3 re-ranking following USF win

CBS Sports’ re-ranking is among the more bearish responses to Florida’s uncomfortable win on Saturday.

Week 3 of college football is officially in the books which means it is time to take a look at how the rankings shook out after yet another exciting weekend of gridiron action. Unfortunately for Gator fans, it was a bit more exciting than it really needed to be.

Florida escaped the Swamp on Saturday with a three-point win over the visiting South Florida Bulls — a matchup that had a 24.5-point spread according to many oddsmakers. Instead of a blowout, USF bullied the Gators on the ground and pestered quarterback Anthony Richardson for a pair of picks. Fortunately, the Orange and Blue won the turnover battle having forced three of their own to help outlast its pesky opponent.

The Gators barely slipped in the two major rankings, dropping one spot to No. 22 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll while slipping two down to No. 20 in the AP Top 25 Poll. USA TODAY Sports’ re-rank after Week 3 put Florida at No. 17 after falling one rung.

CBS Sports’ Chip Patterson also… ahem… chipped in with his latest take on where the Gators belong in his own college football 1-131 re-ranking. [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag]’s boys fell all the way to No. 25 in Patterson’s re-assessment — a loss of five spots, but still among the top 25.

The Southeastern Conference schools who made the list ahead of the Gators led off by the Georgia Bulldogs at No. 1 with the Alabama Crimson Tide right behind at No. 2. The Kentucky Wildcats come in at No. 8 while the Tennessee Volunteers rose to No. 11, Arkansas Razorbacks fell to No. 12, Ole Miss Rebels up to No. 14 and Texas A&M Aggies back in the top 25 at No. 22 to wrap up the eight SEC schools mentioned.

Florida and Tennessee are slated to face off in Knoxville this Saturday with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m. EDT. The game will be broadcast on CBS Sports and can be heard on the Gators Radio Network.

Florida barely slips in USA TODAY Sports’ re-rank after narrow home win

Here’s where USA TODAY Sports re-ranks the Gators after Week 3 of college football.

Florida football is coming off a shaky victory at home against the South Florida Bulls last Saturday, but as the old adage goes, a win is a win. While the Gators looked overwhelmed at times by what was supposed to be an inferior opponent, at the end of the day the Orange and Blue got the job done, and subsequently, the national media was not terribly dismayed with that outcome.

Billy Napier’s team lost a little ground in both the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll and the AP Top 25 Poll this week, dropping one spot to No. 22 in the former while sliding two spots to No. 20 in the latter. USA TODAY Sports’ Paul Myerberg also chimed in with his college football 1-131 re-rank after Week 3, putting Florida at No. 17 in his rankings – down just one spot from the last update.

The Gators are among six Southeastern Conference schools in the top 25, headlined by the Alabama Crimson Tide and Georgia Bulldogs at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. Next up is the Kentucky Wildcats at No. 8 along with the Arkansas Razorbacks at No. 10; the Tennessee Volunteers follow the Gators at No. 23 and Ole Miss Rebels come in at No. 24 to wrap up the top SEC teams.

Florida and Tennessee are slated to face off in Knoxville this Saturday with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m. EDT. The game will be broadcast on CBS Sports and can be heard on the Gators Radio Network.

Where Florida stands in the latest USA TODAY Sports college football re-rank

Florida’s still a top-25 team, according to USA TODAY Sports’ college football re-rank, but the Gators did fall a few spots after losing to Kentucky.

After seeing dips in both major polls following a Week 2 loss to the Kentucky Wildcats, the Florida Gators unsurprisingly fell three spots to No. 16 in the latest college football re-rank from USA TODAY Sports.

While it’s still a positive to be ranked among the top 25 teams in college football, Florida could have been ranked much higher with a win. Kentucky’s 2-0 start has the Wildcats up to No. 7 in the re-rank, and they didn’t beat Utah to start the season.

Now Florida must hope for UK to make a mistake to reclaim the No. 2 spot in the SEC East. Kentucky and Arkansas are both ranked ahead of UF, and Alabama and Georgia sit at Nos. 1 and 2 overall.

Florida’s next best chance to move up a few spots should be its matchup with Tennessee in two weeks. Unfortunately, no amount of beating up on USF will convince anyone that Florida is elite, but the Volunteers have some hype behind them and are currently ranked No. 22 by USA TODAY Sports.

Ole Miss rounds out the top 25 as the seventh SEC team on the list, and Texas A&M fell to No. 27 after losing to Appalachian State. As far as in-state rivals go, Florida State is ranked No. 35 and Miami is outside of the top 40.

Gators make giant leap in USA TODAY Sports’ Week 1 Re-Rank

USA TODAY Sports’ Week 1 Re-Rank is very high on the Gators after their win.

The major poll results are still pending but USA TODAY Sports has already gotten ahead of the game by publishing its college football re-ranking after the conclusion of Week 1 of play. As many might expect, the Florida Gators made a huge jump from the last update, leaping 33 spots into the top 25.

The Gators currently sit at No. 13 in the re-rankings and are one of six SEC teams in the top 25. The Alabama Crimson Tide and Georgia Bulldogs sit at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, while the Texas A&M Aggies are also ahead at No. 8. Trailing behind are the Arkansas Razorbacks at No. 18 and Kentucky Wildcats — Florida’s next opponent — at No. 23.

The jump up the re-rankings was one of the best improvements seen among the 131 schools included. Only the Syracuse Orange (44), Arizona Wildcats (42) and James Madison Dukes (35) saw bigger boosts, while the Old Dominion Monarchs matched the Gators’ gains.

See where Auburn stands in USA Today’s new re-rank

Where do you think Auburn sits in the FBS?

With the season just around the corner, the time for talk is dying down — but it hasn’t died down quite yet.

USA Today’s Paul Myerberg re-ranks every team in the bowl subdivision every week, and this week’s ranking (subscription required) will be the final before college football officially begins with its patented “Week 0” games beginning this weekend. Myerberg ranked the Tigers No. 62 of 131 teams in the rankings, putting them one spot ahead of in-state team Troy and one spot below the Big Ten’s Maryland.

The Tigers land as the 11th-highest ranked SEC team on the list, above Missouri (64), South Carolina (73) and Vanderbilt (121). On the other end of the spectrum, Auburn’s two biggest rivals — Alabama and Georgia — both sit in the top three at first and third, respectively.

Head coach [autotag]Bryan Harsin[/autotag] certainly has a lot to prove in what could be a crucial second year and Tigers fans aren’t likely to be happy being the fourth-worst team in the conference, should Myerberg’s rankings end up holding weight. Auburn will have its first chance to prove any doubters wrong when it squares off against the Mercer Bears on Sept. 3 to open its season on home turf.

Gators with a not-so-nice spot in USA TODAY Sports’ final re-rank

Here’s where USA TODAY Sports ranks Florida in its final re-rank.

The 2021 college football season is now in the rearview mirror after an epic all-SEC national championship game that saw the Georgia Bulldogs triumph over the Alabama Crimson Tide for the title. With every game now in the books, the sports media looks back and gives its final assessment of the past fall’s performances.

USA TODAY Sports published its final NCAA Re-Rank 1-130 on Tuesday, with the Florida Gators landing way down the list after a season to forget in Gainesville. After all was said and done, UF found itself nestled in between the Liberty Flames and Florida State Seminoles, respectively, ranked at No. 69 — a not-so-nice number following a season with much higher aspirations than a middle-of-the-pack finish. This actually pairs well with CBS Sports’ final assessment, in which it ranked the Gators No. 70 in the nation.

Much like in those rankings, USA TODAY Sports had UGA and ‘Bama finished ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, and only fellow SEC school Vanderbilt came in lower than Florida at No. 116. It was an embarrassing finish for a program that had played in three-straight New Year’s Six bowls; but instead, this season, dropped its Gasparilla Bowl matchup with the Central Florida Knights to lose the in-state college football crown.

The good news is that the old regime is gone as Dan Mullen and his staff were given their ultimately walking papers. Now, new head coach Billy Napier and his veritable army of staff bring in a fresh breath of air along with a level of confidence from the fanbase that had not been seen under Mullen in quite some time. While the bar is currently set low after a tumultuous run this past year and change, the expectations of the Gator Nation always run high, and it will be up to Napier to restore the glory of the Orange and Blue.

Gators rise in USA TODAY Sports re-rank after securing bowl eligibility

The Gators are moving up, but fans still won’t be pleased with where the team sits.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbz250mdknqvm5z player_id=none image=https://gatorswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Florida’s 2021 season was so disappointing that it fired a coach who entered the year with almost complete job security, as far as we know. After an overtime loss to Missouri that dropped the team to 5-6, coach Dan Mullen was fired.

UF has already hired his replacement in Billy Napier, but it was the interim coach Greg Knox who got the job done on Saturday, beating rival Florida State as home underdogs. The game wasn’t pretty, but the Gators became bowl eligible in a 24-21 win that had the added bonus of ending the Seminoles’ season.

After that performance, Florida rose in the USA TODAY Sports weekly re-rank, though it’s still far below where this program needs to be. The Gators moved up six spots but still sit at No. 65. That’s one spot below Marshall and one spot above MAC East champion Kent State.

It also makes the Gators the lowest-ranked team in the SEC other than 2-10 Vanderbilt, which is practically unprecedented for this program but also understandable considering the fact that this team was the first in school history to go 2-6 in SEC play.

UF will hope to get things turned around sooner rather than later under Napier, but for now, this team enters a bowl game despite ranking in the middle of the FBS pack.
