Florida cracks top 35 in USA TODAY Sports’ NCAA too-early re-rank

The Gators’ USA TODAY Sports re-rank standing is significantly better than where they were at the end of last season.

The start of the 2024 college football campaign is over three months away but with the conclusion of the spring practice season as well as the transfer portal window, the sports media is already submitting its prognostications for the coming fall.

USA TODAY Sports writer Paul Myerberg submitted his re-rank 1-134 on Wednesday, placing the Florida Gators at No. 33, sitting between the No. 32 Boise State Broncos and No. 34 James Madison Dukes.

The Orange and Blue were ranked No. 73 in the final tally last fall, wedged between the No. 72 California Golden Bears and No. 74 Marshall Thundering Herd.

The Georgia Bulldogs hold the top spot in the re-rank, followed by the Ohio State Buckeyes, Texas Longhorns, Oregon Ducks and Notre Dame Fighting Irish, respectively, in the top five. The LSU Tigers, Alabama Crimson Tide, Florida State Seminoles, Clemson Tigers and Penn State Nittany Lions round out the top 10.

Florida opens up its 2024 regular-season schedule in the Swamp against the Miami Hurricanes on Aug. 31. Kickoff time is slated for 3:30 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast on ABC Sports.

Florida football barely makes top 75 in USA TODAY Sports’ final re-rank

The college football season is officially over. Here’s where the Gators land in USAT’s final re-rank.

The college football season came to a close on Monday night when the top-seeded Michigan Wolverines trounced the second-seeded Washington Huskies in the College Football Playoff Championship Game, 34-13.

Now that all is said and done, USA TODAY Sports’ Paul Myerberg released his final re-rank for the 2023 season and it does not look good for the Florida Gators. After coming in at No. 71 in the last update, the Orange and Blue fell two spots to No. 73 in the closing tally, wedged between the No. 72 Cal Bears and No. 74 Marshall Thundering Herd.

Michigan and Washington hold the top two spots, respectively, while the Georgia Bulldogs are at No. 3, followed by the Texas Longhorns and Alabama Crimson Tide. The Florida State Seminoles, Oregon Ducks, Missouri Tigers, Ohio State Buckeyes and Ole Miss Rebels round out the top 10, respectively.

The Gator Nation will have to wait until the Orange and Blue game to see the team back in action. That intrasquad exhibition will take place inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium sometime this coming spring with a date and time yet to be announced.

Check out the full re-rankings below following the national championship game.

USA TODAY Sports’ college football re-rank after championship weekend

No changes for the Gators in USA TODAY Sport’s weekly college football re-rank.

The College Football Playoff matchups are now set following conference championship weekend, with the Michigan Wolverines, Washington Huskies, Texas Longhorns and Alabama Crimson Tide, respectively, all in contention for the big prize.

While the final four are now official, the sports media is still churning out its own respective rankings ahead of the start of bowl season. USA TODAY Sports was among those, publishing its re-rank on Monday. This week, the Florida Gators remained at No. 71 overall, just behind the California Bears and ahead of the South Florida Bulls.

Michigan and Washington hold the top two spots while the Florida State Seminoles are at No. 3, followed by Texas and Alabama. The Georgia Bulldogs, Ohio State Buckeyes, Oregon Ducks, Missouri Tigers and Penn State Nittany Lions round out the top 10, respectively.

The Gator Nation will have to wait until the Orange and Blue game to see the team back in action. That intrasquad exhibition will take place inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium sometime this coming spring with a date and time yet to be announced.

Florida drops 9 spots in final regular season USA TODAY Sports re-rank

The Florida Gators finished ahead of just two other SEC teams in the final regular season update to the USA TODAY Sports college football re-rank.

The college football regular season is finished, which means the adjustments made to the USA TODAY Sports college football re-rank from here on out will be minor at best, especially for teams such as Florida that won’t play a bowl game.

The top 30 or so is still in flux with championship week and the postseason still to come, but the Gators are done for the year and have little hope to move up from No. 71 overall. The loss to Florida State on Saturday moved Florida down nine places — one ahead of the South Florida Bulls.

Florida finished the regular season 12th out of the 14 SEC teams, placing ahead of No. 96 Arkansas and No. 121 Vanderbilt.

There’s no doubt that 2023 was a rough year for the Gators, especially during the back half of the season. Losing to the Razorbacks proved to be the most costly defeat of the year, but the close loss to Missouri hurts almost as bad.

Year 3 will be a crucial one for head coach Billy Napier. Gators fans won’t accept a third losing season in a row.

Florida falls in The Athletic’s weekly re-rank after Missouri loss

Florida dropped three spots in this week’s update from The Athletic.

It was a close game despite the oddsmakers expecting a one-sided affair, but the Florida Gators were unable to close out against the Missouri Tigers at Faurot Field in Week 12, resulting in a demoralizing 33-31 loss to the then-11th-ranked team in the country.

The Orange and Blue lost its starting quarterback near the end of the third quarter, but backup Max Brown filled in admirably. However, the redshirt freshman made a huge mistake that led to a turnover that likely represented the difference in this one.

After the final horn sounded on Saturday, The Athletic’s Chris Vannini took on the task of ranking all 133 members of the Football Bowl Subdivision, including Florida. Billy Napier and Co. dropped three spots to No. 52 in this week’s update.

Next up for the Gators in what could be the final game of the 2023 campaign are the Florida State Seminoles, who travel to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 25, for a matchup between two in-state rivals. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. ET and the game can be watched on ESPN.

Florida football slips again in USA TODAY Sports’ Week 12 re-rank

The Gators lost a little ground in USA TODAY Sports’ re-rank following the Week 12 loss.

Billy Napier and Co. came up short in Week 12 against the Missouri Tigers, getting outlasted on a cold autumn night in Columbia by a 33-31 score. It was the second time and three tries that Florida fell on a last-second field goal attempt.

The loss puts the Gators one step closer to their third-straight losing season and the first without a bowl game appearance since 2017. It has been a rollercoaster season for the Orange and Blue, which earned its first three-game winning streak in three seasons before losing the last four matchups.

Following college football’s Week 12 action, USA TODAY Sports Paul Myerberg published his re-rankings for all 133 of the Football Bowl Subdivision schools. In it, he dropped UF four spots to No. 62 overall.

Florida football takes another hit in USA TODAY Sports’ Week 11 re-rank

Florida fell once again in USA TODAY Sports’ re-rank following the LSU loss.

It was a wild affair in Baton Rouge this weekend, where the LSU Tigers throttled the Florida Gators, 52-35, in a shootout between two historic Southeastern Conference rivals. In the end, Billy Napier’ boys had neither the defense to stop Heisman Trophy candidate Jaydon Daniels nor the offense to keep up with him.

Following the Week 11 loss, which moved the Orange and Blue closer to a bowl-less December, USA TODAY Sports’ Paul Myerberg published his re-rankings for all 133 Football Bowl Subdivision programs. As one would expect, Florida lost some ground once again, falling seven spots to No. 58.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders sit just ahead of the Gators while the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are just behind them.

Next up for Florida are the Missouri Tigers, who host the Gators in Columbia, Missouri, on Saturday, Nov. 18, inside Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. ET and can be watched on ESPN.

Take a look at USA TODAY Sports’ full re-rank following Week 11 of the college football season.

Florida drops two spots over bye week in USA TODAY Sports re-rank

Despite not playing a game in Week 8, the Florida Gators fell two spots in the latest USA TODAY Sports re-rank update.

Even though Florida didn’t play a game during Week 8, the Gators fell two spots in the USA TODAY Sports re-rank.

The Orange and Blue now sit at No. 35 overall in the rankings, but a clash with No. 2 Georgia this week could change that. No, that’s not a typo. Georgia is ranked second behind Michigan on this list. Ohio State, Washington and Florida State round out the top five.

As for the rest of the SEC, No. 9 Alabama jumped into the top 10 with a win over now-No. 19 Tennessee. Ole Miss and Missouri both jumped seven spots to Nos. 13 and 15, respectively. LSU is No. 22, Kentucky is No. 31 and the rest are ranked below Florida. Arkansas, which Florida plays after Georgia, is down 11 spots to No. 88 overall.

A strong outing against the Bulldogs could move Florida up, but Florida’s downward trend on these rankings could continue with a blowout.

Take a look at the full list of schools in this week’s re-rankings below.

Gators make up some ground in The Athletic’s Week 7 rankings

It is not a huge boost, but the Gators are creeping back toward The Athletic’s top 25 after the Week 7 win.

A battle on Saturday between two Southeastern Conference East football programs that have struggled of late was a nail-biter. Fortunately for the Gator Nation, Florida emerged victoriously from its road game against the South Carolina Gamecocks, 41-39, to improve to 5-2 just past the halfway mark of the 2023 schedule.

Last week, Chris Vanini of The Athletic had the Orange and Blue ranked No. 29 overall in his weekly edition of rankings for all 133 Power Five teams. Following the Week 7 win, Billy Napier and Co. moved up to No. 27, representing a two-spot improvement.

The Georgia Bulldogs come in at No. 2 with the Alabama Crimson Tide at No. 9 to represent the SEC in the top 10. The Ole Miss Rebels (No. 17), LSU Tigers (No. 19) and Missouri Tigers (No. 20) wrap up the league schools among the top 25.

The Gators have a bye this week ahead of the biggest game on the schedule against Georgia. The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party will take place at TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville, Florida, on Oct. 28, with a kickoff time of 3:30 p.m. EDT set. The game will be broadcast on CBS Sports.

Florida jumps in USA TODAY Sports’ re-rank after Week 7 win

The Gators are moving on up… to the top-35 in USAT’s post-Week 7 re-rank.

Billy Napier has not seen much success during his tenure with Florida football when it comes to road games, but his Gators managed to earn a huge comeback victory at the South Carolina Gamecocks this past Saturday to give the team some steam heading into the toughest part of their schedule.

Coming into the game, the Orange and Blue were No. 43 in USA TODAY Sports’ weekly re-rank. Having earned its fifth win of the season against two losses, Florida saw a tidy 10-spot improvement in the Week 7 update, moving up to No. 33 overall.

As far as Florida’s Southeastern Conference peers are concerned, the Georgia Bulldogs remain at No. 2 behind the Michigan Wolverines. The Alabama Crimson Tide (No. 12), Tennessee Volunteers (No. 14), Ole Miss Rebels (No. 20) and Missouri Tigers (No. 22) round out sister schools in the top 25, while the LSU Tigers (No. 27), Kentucky Wildcats (No. 29) and Texas A&M Aggies (No. 48) join the Gators among the top 50.

The Gators have a bye this week ahead of the biggest game on the schedule against the Bulldogs. The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party will take place at TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville, Florida, on Oct. 28, with a kickoff time of 3:30 p.m. EDT set. The game will be broadcast on CBS Sports.
