Where Florida football stands in USA TODAY Sports Week 5 re-rank

The Gators moved up this week in USA TODAY Sports’ re-rank despite not playing last weekend.

The Florida Gators got a breather with a bye but most of their other college football peers were in action last weekend, with plenty of excitement on the gridiron stretching from coast to coast.

The biggest result in Week 5’s collegiate gridiron action was the Alabama Crimson Tide‘s home win over the Georgia Bulldogs, which came in dramatic fashion as SEC games are wont to. The 41-34 final score caused quite a bit of movement in the polls and rankings.

Among them is the USA TODAY Sports re-rank put together by Paul Myerberg, who submitted his ranking of all 134 FBS schools based on their performances through the first five weeks.

Florida’s Week 5 re-rank position

Myerberg moved the Gators up two spots to No. 69 in his re-rank despite not taking the field this weekend. Florida now sits between the No. 68 Georgia Southern Eagles and No. 70 San Jose State Spartans.

The Texas Longhorns now occupy the top spot in the rankings, followed by Alabama, the Ohio State Buckeyes, Tennessee Volunteers and Georgia, respectively, to round out the top five.

The Oregon Ducks came in sixth, while the Penn State Nittany Lions, Miami Hurricanes, Iowa State and Missouri Tigers, respectively, wrap up the top 10 programs in the re-rank.

Up next for the Gators

Florida hosts the UCF Knights on Saturday, Oct. 5 for a Week 6 tangle between two Sunshine State rivals, with kickoff slated for 7:45 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on the SEC Network.

Week 4 win at MSU moves Florida up CBS Sports’ re-rank

The Gators are still way down the re-rankings but are working their way back up after the recent win.

Billy Napier and the Florida football team evened up their 2024 record last weekend with a strong 45-28 victory in Starkville over the Mississippi State Bulldogs. The Gators are now 2-2 overall and 1-1 in Southeastern Conference play with a bye in Week 5 and an in-state rival slated for the following weekend.

Subsequently, the Orange and Blue saw improvements in most of the rankings and ratings, including CBS Sports’ weekly re-rank, in which Florida saw a three-spot rise to No. 78 out of 134 FBS teams. That puts the Gators between the No. 77 San Jose State Trojans and No. 79 South Florida Bulls.

Gators inch up a spot in The Athletic’s Week 4 college football re-rank

Florida moves up a spot in The Athletic’s Week 4 re-rank.

Billy Napier temporarily escaped the rising flames from his head coach hot seat on Saturday with a Week 4 win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs in Starkville, snapping a seven-game losing streak to FBS opponents in the process.

The victory also evened the Gators’ overall season record to 2-2 as well as their mark in the Southeastern Conference, which now sits at 1-1.

Following last weekend’s action and the release of the two major polls, The Athletic’s Chris Vannini updated his weekly re-rank of all 134 Football Bowl Series teams, giving the Gators a wee bit of a boost thanks to the 45-28 triumph.

Florida’s re-rank after Week 4

Vannini lifted Florida a single spot in his re-rank this week from No. 67 to No. 66, putting the Gators between the No. 65 Maryland Terrapins and No. 67 Colorado Buffaloes. Florida was previously ranked No. 48 two weeks prior.

The Florida State Seminoles also gained some ground, moving up from No. 87 to No. 75 after Week 4.

Florida gets boost from MSU road win in USA TODAY Sports re-rank

The Gators moved up 10 spots in USA TODAY Sports’ re-rank after Week 4.

Florida football put a stop to its bleeding on Saturday in Starkville with a 45-28 win over the Mississippi Bulldogs. The win was the first against an FBS opponent in the Gators’ last eight tries and evened the team record on the season to 2-2 (1-1, SEC).

While the triumph on the road was an important step forward for Billy Napier and Co., it came against what might be the weakest program in a brutally difficult 16-team Southeastern Conference. Nonetheless, the national sports media is seeing the Orange and Blue in a bit more positive light entering the Week 5 bye.

That change in perspective was reflected in this week’s USA TODAY Sports college football re-rank by Paul Myerberg, who gave the Gators a solid boost after their first conference win of the season.

Florida’s Week 4 re-rank position

Myerberg elevated Florida 10 spots this week from No. 81 to No. 71 following the Mississippi State victory. That puts the Gators between the No. 70 Kansas Jayhawks and No. 72 San Jose State Spartans.

The Florida State Seminoles fell two spots from their previous ranking from No. 80 to No. 82.

Florida football takes huge tumble in The Athletic’s Week 3 re-rank

The Athletic did not like what it saw from Florida on Saturday, and in turn, sent the Gators downward in its re-rank after Week 3.

Florida football suffered a heartbreaking 33-20 defeat on Saturday to the Texas A&M Aggies in the Swamp — a loss that could lead to the dismissal of head coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] but has also demoralized the Gator Nation.

In a season where hope sprung eternal coming into the opener against the Miami Hurricanes back in August, reality has crashed down hard on the Orange and Blue, leaving very few believers where once there was vociferous support for the program.

As one might imagine, a 1-2 start with only a victory over an FCS school — and even that game did not look great other than DJ Lagway‘s breakout performance — has Florida sitting well outside the major polls and sinking in many of the rankings.

On the topic of ranking, The Athletic’s Chris Vannini updated his weekly re-ranking of college football’s 134 FBS schools and sent Napier and Co. tumbling in his standings.

Florida’s re-rank after Week 3

Following the home loss to the Aggies, the Gators find themselves ranked No. 67 in the nation on Vannini’s re-rank, bookended by the No. 66 Wisconsin Badgers and No. 68 Colorado Buffaloes. Florida was previously ranked No. 48, representing a precipitous 19-spot fall after Week 3.

The Athletic’s Week 2 Top 10 re-rank

The Texas Longhorns take over the top spot, followed by the Georgia Bulldogs, Ohio State Buckeyes, Ole Miss Rebels and Tennessee Volunteers, respectively, to round out the post-Week 3 top five.

The Miami Hurricanes, Alabama Crimson TideOregon Ducks, Missouri Tigers and Penn State Nittany Lions round out the top 10, respectively.

Up next for the Gators

Florida will play their first road game of the season as they travel up to Starkville to play against the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Saturday, Sept. 21. Kickoff is set for noon ET and will be broadcast on ESPN.

Gators amazingly unmoved in USA TODAY Sports’ re-rank after Week 3

USA TODAY Sports still has Florida re-ranked in the same spot since losing to Miami in the opening weekend.

The first quarter of Florida football’s 2024 schedule is in the books and so far things are not looking good in Gainesville. With a pair of home losses already logged and the toughest schedule in the sport still ahead, the Gators are having a hard time finding solid ground.

As a result of the poor performance seen from [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag]’s squad — which has the skipper on the hottest seat in college football — the Orange and Blue are completely absent from the major polls and are an afterthought in many of the other rankings.

Among those include USA TODAY Sports’ Paul Myerberg, who submitted his re-rank following Week 3’s action with a surprising result for Florida.

Florida’s re-rank position

Myerberg still has the Gators ranked No. 81 — the same spot he had Florida last two weeks — despite the home loss. That puts Florida between the No. 80 Florida State Seminoles and No. 82 Western Kentucky Big Red.

What is not surprising is that UF and FSU are sharing their misery on this week’s re-rank after the ‘Noles began their season 0-3. This year is the first since 1955 that both schools had losing records after three games.

Florida slips a spot in The Athletic’s re-rank after Week 2 win

The Florida Gators remain in The Athletic’s college football re-rank top 50 after the Week 2 win over Samford.

It took a couple of tries but the Florida football program earned its first victory of the 2024 campaign last Saturday in the Swamp against the Samford Bulldogs, 45-7. While a blowout win over an FCS opponent is hardly a grand achievement, it was a much-needed boost for the Orange and Blue.

However, the effort on the field was far from perfect despite a record-setting day from true freshman quarterback DJ Lagway in his first-ever collegiate start. The discipline issues that have plagued the program for years once again reared its ugly head along with a few other weaknesses that remain exposed.

Florida’s re-rank after Week 2

Fortunately, the results have not changed much in the eyes of the sports media. The Athletic’s Chris Vaninni published his college football Week 2 re-rank after the dust settled and docked the Orange and Blue a spot from last week’s standings, dropping it from No. 47 to No. 48.

That puts Billy Napier and Co. between the 47th-ranked Auburn Tigers and the 49th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers.

Next up for the Gators

Florida will host the Texas A&M Aggies — who landed at No. 33 in the re-rank — inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 14. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast on ABC.

Florida unmoved in USA TODAY Sports college football re-rank after Week 2

Florida’s re-rank according to USA TODAY Sports remains unchanged after the Samford win.

Florida football evened up its 2024 record on Saturday with a 45-7 win over the Samford Bulldogs in the Swamp, but despite the lopsided score the overall performance was not quite up to par.

The highlight of the weekend, of course, was freshman quarterback DJ Lagway‘s first collegiate start and the record-breaking numbers he put up against the FCS opponent. However, the rest of the team still showed some weaknesses that need to be addressed before Week 3.

As is his wont, USA TODAY Sports writer Paul Myerberg released his weekly college football re-rank from the top to bottom of the 134 FBS schools, and not much changed for Billy Napier‘s squad after the Week 2 triumph.

Florida’s re-rank position

Myerberg has the Gators ranked No. 81 — the same spot he had Florida last week — after the Saturday win in the Swamp, putting the Orange and Blue between the Texas Tech Red Raiders (No. 80) and New Mexico State Aggies No. 82). Only the Mississippi State Bulldogs, who dropped 17 spots to No. 84, rank lower than Florida this week among SEC schools.

The week prior, Napier and Co. were ranked No. 59 but the loss to the Miami Hurricanes (No. 11) dropped the program 22 spots in the rankings.

Gators fall to bottom of SEC in USA TODAY Sports’ college football re-rank

The Gators drop 22 spots from last week’s USA TODAY Sports’ college football re-rank.

After a nightmare start to the season losing at home to the Miami Hurricanes in Week 1, Florida football is desperate to quickly turn things around. But of course, it’s easier said than done.

Days and days of negativity have head coach Billy Napier and his Gators in need of something positive. And that could come this week when they play a Samford Bulldogs team that “should” be a feasible win for Florida.

But looking at today, the Gators are pretty much as low as they can get.

Sports writer Paul Myerberg of USA TODAY Sports re-ranked every FBS school during the preseason and just released his updated list ahead of Week 2.

Florida’s re-rank position

Myerberg has the Gators ranked No. 81, dropping down a whopping 22 spots from last week’s rank at No. 59. Florida is above the Florida Atlantic University Owls (No. 82) and below the Fresno State Bulldogs (No. 80).

Florida is also at the bottom of the SEC in the re-rank.

USA TODAY’s Week 2 Top 10 re-rank

Myerberg has the Georgia Bulldogs (No. 1) at the top spot followed by the Ohio State Buckeyes (No. 2) and Texas Longhorns (No. 3). The Alabama Crimson Tide (No. 4) and Notre Dame Fighting Irish (No. 5) round out the top five.

Next are the Oregon Ducks (No. 6), Penn State Nittany Lions (No. 7), Ole Miss Rebels (No. 8), USC Trojans (No. 9) and Utah Utes (No. 10).

Gators Week 2 Game

Florida (0-1) will go up against the Samford Bulldogs (0-1) next Saturday at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on SEC Network+.

Where Florida football falls in USA TODAY Sports’ preseason re-rank

With the college football season just days away, USA TODAY Sports re-ranked all 134 FBS schools. Where do the Florida Gators end up on that list?

With the 2024 college football season just days away, teams are starting out fresh and ready to make some noise.

The Florida Gators are one of those teams trying to get their season started in the right direction and they know that a season-opening win against the 19th-ranked Miami Hurricanes is absolutely crucial to build momentum for the rest of the year.

After a disappointing 5-7 record last year, head coach Billy Napier and his Florida squad are looking to bounce back and surprise some people.

But of course, they have to perform well on the field and as of now, the national media is looking at the Gators as a mediocre football team.

Florida’s ranking in USA TODAY’s Re-Rank

Sports writer Paul Myerberg of USA TODAY Sports re-ranked all 134 FBS schools and he has the Gators at No. 59 just behind the Tulane Green Wave (No. 58) and ahead of the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks (No. 60).

Florida is ahead of just three other SEC teams: Arkansas Razorbacks (No. 68), Mississippi State Bulldogs (No. 73) and Vanderbilt Commodores (No. 118).

USA TODAY’s Re-Ranked Top 10

Myerberg has the Georgia Bulldogs (No. 1) at the top spot followed by the Ohio State Buckeyes (No. 2) and Texas Longhorns (No. 3). The Oregon Ducks (No. 4) and Alabama Crimson Tide (No. 5) round out the top five.

Next are the LSU Tigers (No. 6), Notre Dame Fighting Irish (No. 7), Clemson Tigers (No. 8), Penn State Nittany Lions (No. 9) and Ole Miss Rebels (No. 10).

Florida’s season opener for 2024

The Florida Gators and No. 19 Miami Hurricanes square off on Aug. 31 in Gainesville, Florida to open their schedule for the 2024 season. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on ABC Sports.
