Florida moves up The Athletic’s college football re-rank after Week 8

The Gators crack The Athletic’s Week 8 college football re-rank top 50 after beating the Wildcats.

Billy Napier managed to turn down the temperature on his head coach hot seat on Saturday night thanks to an authoritative 48-20 homecoming win over the Kentucky Wildcats in the Swamp.

Florida looked good on both sides of the ball in Week 8, with a pair of freshmen leading the offense while the defense matched its entire interception total during the 2023 season in one night. It might have been the best overall effort by the Gators seen in quite some time.

The national sports media took note of the results and many have rewarded the Orange and Blue for the win, including The Athletic’s Chris Vannini, who submitted his re-rank of all 134 FBS teams once the dust finally settled.

Florida’s re-rank after Week 8

Vannini’s update has Florida improving 12 spots to No. 46 — one spot behind the Gators’ standing in USA TODAY Sports’ Week 8 re-rank. That puts Florida between the No. 45 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and No. 47 Virginia Tech Hokies.

As far as fellow Southeastern Conference schools are concerned, only Kentucky (No. 49), the Auburn Tigers (No. 81) and Mississippi State Bulldogs (No. 93) are ranked lower.

Gators jump up USA TODAY Sports college football re-rank after Week 8

Florida cracks USA TODAY Sports’ re-rank top 50 after its homecoming win over Kentucky.

Florida football defended its home field on homecoming last weekend, routing the visiting Kentucky Wildcats, 48-20, en route to the Gators’ fourth win in seven tries this season and second in four Southeastern Conference matchups.

Not only did the Orange and Blue tag a W in the win column, both the offense and defense looked solid on Saturday night. Freshman quarterback [autotag]DJ Lagway[/autotag], who made his first SEC start with [autotag]Graham Mertz[/autotag] out for the season, showcased his rocket-launcher arm; fellow freshman running back [autotag]Jaden Baugh[/autotag] rushed for five touchdowns, tying the Florida single-game record held by [autotag]Tim Tebow[/autotag] and Trey Burton.

The secondary also matched the team total for interceptions all last season in just one game, including a pick six.

As a result of the Week 8 triumph, Florida saw its stock rise in many of the polls and rankings, including USA TODAY Sports writer Paul Myerberg’s re-rank of all 134 FBS schools.

Florida’s Week 8 re-rank position

Myerberg came away impressed with the win but still is bearish on the Gators overall, lifting them 11 spots to No. 45 this week. That puts Florida between the No. 44 Tulane Green Wave and No. 46 Western Kentucky Colonels.

Billy Napier’s squad is ahead of four other SEC programs in the rankings, with the Arkansas Razorbacks (No. 53), Kentucky (No. 64), Auburn Tigers (No. 90) and Mississippi State Bulldogs (No. 107) lagging behind.

The Oregon Ducks claimed the top spot this week after the currently second-ranked Georgia Bulldogs dethroned the now-seventh-ranked Texas Longhorns. The Ohio State Buckeyes, Penn State Nittany Lions and Miami Hurricanes, respectively, wrap up the top five.

Coming in sixth are Iowa State Cyclones, followed by Texas, the Clemson Tigers, LSU Tigers and Tennessee Volunteers, respectively, to cap the top 10.

Gators slip in CBS Sports college football re-rank after Week 7

Florida lost a little ground in CBS Sports’ 134 re-rank after Week 7’s loss at Tennessee.

Amidst a few missed chances on the part of the visiting Florida football program, the Gators were unable to pull off the upset at the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday night. Instead, Billy Napier’s squad fell, 23-17, in overtime against their Southeastern Conference rival.

As a result of the near-miss in Knoxville, the Orange and Blue were docked five spots in CBS Sports’ Week 7 re-rank for all 134 FBS schools, dropping from No. 63 last week to No. 68. That puts Florida between the No. 67 Texas State Bobcats and No. 69 Toldeo Rockets.

The Gators remain 14th in the Southeastern Conference this week out of 16 member schools, with the Auburn Tigers (No. 72) and Mississippi State Bulldogs (No. 96) ranked lower.

Florida falls in The Athletic’s Week 7 re-rank despite forcing OT at UT

Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades in the mind of The Athletic’s re-rank after Week 7.

College football’s Week 7 action included a good old-fashioned Southeastern Conference dogfight in Neyland Stadium, where the Tennessee Volunteers outlasted the Florida Gators in overtime, 23-17.

Coming into Saturday, the oddsmakers predicted the Vols as at least a two-score favorite on their home field, but SEC rivalry games have a way of turning sideways quickly. While [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag]’s defense came to play, putting up their best effort of the fall, some suspect playcalling and mental mistakes once again doomed the Orange and Blue.

Now sitting at 3-3 overall with a 1-2 mark against conference competition, Florida remains voteless in both polls and also lost ground in some of the re-ranks, such as The Athletic’s Chris Vannini.

Florida’s re-rank after Week 7

Vannini’s Week 7 college football re-rank for all 134 FBS schools saw the Gators slip five spots from No. 53 to No. 58. This comes after leaping 13 spots the week prior after defeating the UCF Knights at home.

That puts Napier and Co. between the No. 57 James Madison Dukes and No. 59 Oklahoma State Cowboys.

Gators slip in USA TODAY Sports re-rank after Week 7 loss at Vols

Florida slipped three spots in USA TODAY Sports’ college football Week 7 re-rank.

Florida football fell to an even 3-3 overall record this weekend after a 23-17 overtime loss at the Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville — a game that the Gators had opportunities to win but simply could not pull off the upset.

However, hanging with a top-10 team for a full 60 minutes while losing your starting quarterback along the way is nothing to scoff at. The defense by far played its best game and despite [autotag]Graham Mertz[/autotag]’s injury, the passing game got the job done.

The sports media had different reactions to Saturday night’s results, including USA TODAY Sports writer Paul Myerberg in his Week 7 re-rank of all 134 FBS schools.

Florida’s Week 7 re-rank position

Myerberg was clearly unimpressed with what he saw from the Orange and Blue in Neyland Stadium this past weekend. He docked [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag]’s squad three spots from last week’s update, putting Florida at No. 56 despite nearly upsetting an SEC foe on the road.

That nestles the Gators between the No. 55 Kentucky Wildcats and No. 57 Toledo Rockets. It also ranks them at No. 14 among Southeastern Conference programs, only better than the Auburn Tigers (No. 83) and Mississippi State Bulldogs (No. 103).

Florida rises significantly in CBS Sports college football re-rank

Like the other re-ranks this week, the Gators made a major leap in CBS Sports’ weekly tally.

Florida football earned its third win of the 2024 campaign last Saturday in the Swamp with a 34-23 victory over the visiting UCF Knights. The triumph gives the Gators a winning record for the first time since this season ahead of an upcoming brutal stretch of their schedule.

The Week 6 results bumped the Orange and Blue up 14 spots to No. 63 in the weekly CBS Sports re-rank of all 134 FBS schools composed by Chip Patterson. That nestles Florida between the No. 62 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers and No. 64 Northern Illinois Huskies.

The Gators are at No. 14 this week in the Southeastern Conference out of 16 member schools, with the Auburn Tigers (74) and Mississippi State Bulldogs (96) ranked lower.

The Texas Longhorns took over the top spot this week after the Alabama Crimson Tide‘s upset loss at the Vanderbilt Commodores, which sent them tumbling to No. 6. The Ohio State Buckeyes, Penn State Nittany Lions, Oregon Ducks and Miami Hurricanes round out the top five, respectively.

After ‘Bama comes the Georgia Bulldogs, Iowa State Cyclones, Clemson Tigers and BYU Cougars, respectively, round out this week’s top 10.

Win over UCF gives Gators much-needed boost in The Athletic’s re-rank

The Athletic’s re-rank for college football after Week 6 moved the Gators up to the same spot as USA TODAY Sports.

Week 6 of the 2024 college football season was a wild one that saw a handful of top-10 upsets — all in Southeastern Conference play — that shook up the national landscape and the playoff picture.

Meanwhile, the Florida Gators took care of business in the Swamp, fending off the invading UCF Knights, 34-23, to earn their third win in five tries this fall. The victory also gave Billy Napier his first winning record since before the LSU Tigers loss last season.

The triumph was an important one as the program eyes a .500 finish despite facing the toughest schedule in recent memory. The national media took notice, making adjustments to their various rankings to accommodate Saturday’s achievement.

Florida’s re-rank after Week 6

Chris Vaninni put together his weekly re-rank for The Athletic after the dust settled from last weekend’s action and moved the Gators up 13 spots to No. 53. Interestingly, this is the same re-rank Florida received from USA TODAY Sports.

That puts the team between the No. 52 Oklahoma State Cowboys and No. 54 Liberty Flames.

The Texas Longhorns regained the top spot in the re-rank this week, followed by the Ohio State Buckeyes, Alabama Crimson Tide, Georgia Bulldogs and Oregon Ducks, respectively, among the top five.

Florida football moves up 16 spots in USA TODAY Sports re-rank

The Gators got a hefty boost in USA TODAY Sports’ college football re-rank after their win over UCF.

Florida football scored an important victory over the UCF Knights inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium last Saturday, giving the Gators their first winning record since before the LSU Tigers loss in Baton Rouge last year.

While the sibling school from Orlando is often an afterthought, this season’s edition of the Knights was cruising along until the Colorado Buffaloes handed them their first loss — at home, no less — and had a pair of votes in the US LBM Coaches Poll coming into Week 6.

That helped Florida a bit when it came time to re-rank the 134 FBS programs. Here is how things panned out this week.

Florida’s Week 6 re-rank position

USA TODAY Sports writer Paul Myerberg submitted his college football re-rank following the weekend’s action and lifted the Orange and Blue 16 spots to No. 53. That puts Billy Napier and Co. between the No. 52 Buffaloes and No. 54 Arizona Wildcats.

The Texas Longhorns remain in the top spot, followed by the Ohio State Buckeyes, Oregon Ducks, Penn State Nittany Lions and Georgia Bulldogs, respectively, to round out the top five.

Florida inches up in CBS Sports college football re-rank after Week 5

After a bit of a Week 5 shuffle in the CBS Sports re-rank, the Gators find themselves one spot higher than last week.

Week 5 of the 2024 college football schedule was packed full of action but the Florida Gators were not part of the excitement on the final weekend of September. Instead, Billy Napier and Co. took a break with a much-needed bye to regroup before the next opponent.

Despite the inaction, the Orange and Blue climbed one spot in the weekly CBS Sports re-rank of all 134 FBS schools composed by Chip Patterson, moving up to No. 77. That nestles Florida between the No. 76 Texas State Bobcats and No. 78 Minnesota Golden Gophers.

The Gators are at No. 15 this week in the Southeastern Conference out of 16 member schools, with only the Mississippi State Bulldogs (No. 101) — who they beat two weekends ago in Starkville — ranked lower.

The Alabama Crimson Tide took over the top spot thanks to a 41-34 win in Tuscaloosa over the Georgia Bulldogs, who fell to No. 5. The Ohio State Buckeyes, Texas Longhorns and Tennessee Volunteers fill the space in between, respectively, for this week’s top five.

The Penn State Nittany Lions follow at No. 6, with the Miami Hurricanes, Oregon Ducks, Missouri Tigers and Iowa State Cyclones wrapping up the top 10, respectively.

Up next for the Gators

Florida hosts the UCF Knights on Saturday, Oct. 5 for a Week 6 tangle between two Sunshine State rivals, with kickoff slated for 7:45 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on the SEC Network.

Gators stand steady in The Athletic’s Week 5 college football re-rank

Florida did not play in Week 5 and The Athletic’s re-rank did not change. Fair play.

Florida football had a bye last weekend, giving the Gators a chance to group after the first third of their 2024 schedule was complete. However, there was plenty of other action around the country on the collegiate gridiron that shook things up a bit in the polls and rankings.

The nation’s top 10 saw two upsets in the form of a 41-34 Alabama Crimson Tide win over the Georgia Bulldogs, as well as a 20-17 victory for the Kentucky Wildcats over the Ole Miss Rebels. That sent a shock not only in the national standings but also in the battle for the Southeastern Conference crown.

Florida’s re-rank after Week 4

After the dust settled from the weekend, Chris Vaninni put together his weekly re-rank for The Athletic but did not feel compelled to change the Gators’ position, putting them at No. 66 for the second straight week.

The Athletic’s Week 4 Top 10 re-rank

Alabama takes over the top spot after its signature win, with the erstwhile No. 1 team, the Texas Longhorns, falling to No. 2. Georgia remains in the top five despite the loss at No. 3, while the Tennessee Volunteers and Ohio State Buckeyes wrap up the top five, respectively.

The Oregon Ducks, Penn State Nittany Lions, Miami Hurricanes, Missouri Tigers and Michigan Wolverines round out the top 10, respectively.

Up next for the Gators

Florida hosts the UCF Knights on Saturday, Oct. 5 for a Week 6 tangle between two Sunshine State rivals, with kickoff slated for 7:45 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on the SEC Network.
