Florida football among biggest movers CBS Sports’ Week 11 re-rank

Florida fell 15 spots in CBS Sports’ weekly college football re-rank after getting throttled by Texas.

The scene on Saturday afternoon in Austin was a grim one for the Gator Nation as their beloved Florida football team took a pounding at the hands of the Texas Longhorns in the latter’s first year in the Southeastern Conference.

It was also the first meeting in 84 years between the two schools on the collegiate gridiron, with Texas now holding a 3-0-1 record all-time against Florida.

The devastating defeat resulted in the Orange and Blue dropping 15 spots in CBS Sports writer Chip Patterson’s weekly re-rank update, falling from No. 50 to No. 65.

“Competitiveness against Tennessee and Georgia, as well as a thrashing of Kentucky, had kept the floor high for the Gators as the losses were piling up in recent weeks,” Patterson notes. “But after a 49-17 thumping at Texas, the CBS Sports 134 voters have pulled the rug out and now stack Florida up against other middling power conference teams facing challenging roads to bowl eligibility.”

The Gators are now wedged between the No. 64 UConn Huskies and No. 66 Southern Georgia Eagles.

The Oregon Ducks once again remain perched at No. 1 this week while the Ohio State Buckeyes also held onto the second spot in the re-rank. The Texas Longhorns moved up three places to No. 3 followed by the Indiana Hoosiers and Penn State Nittany Lions, who advanced one and two spots, respectively.

The BYU Cougars log in at No. 6 while the Tennessee Volunteers, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Alabama Crimson Tide and SMU Mustangs wrap up the top 10 in that order.

The Gators return to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium to host the LSU Tigers in college football’s Week 12. The Southeastern Conference matchup will kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on ABC.

Florida slips in The Athletic’s college football re-rank after Week 11

The Gators suffered only a small slip in The Athletic’s re-rank after college football’s Week 11.

College football’s Week 11 is in the books and with less than a month left of the regular season remaining, many things are becoming clear about this year’s competitive field.

Among those topics are the Florida Gators, who have struggled with injuries this fall and are in danger of recording their fourth-straight season with a losing record — something that would have been unfathomable to think a few years ago.

The latest loss at the Texas Longhorns in Austin was demonstrative of the gap between [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag]’s team and the rest of the college football landscape, much less the Southeastern Conference. As a result, the Orange and Blue lost a little bit of ground in The Athletic’s re-rank after Week 11.

Florida’s re-rank after Week 11

Author Chris Vannini dropped the Gators three spots from No. 51 last week to No. 54 after the loss to the Longhorns. That puts Florida between the No. 53 North Carolina Tar Heels and No. 55 Michigan State Spartans — the two schools that bookended them in last week’s re-rank.

Compare that with USA TODAY Sports, which re-ranked Florida at No. 57 — down 12 spots from the previous week.

As far as fellow SEC schools are concerned, only the Auburn Tigers (No. 69), Kentucky Wildcats (No. 70) and Mississippi State Bulldogs (No. 100) are ranked lower.

The Athletic’s Week 11 Top 10 re-rank

The Oregon Ducks held onto the top perch in the rankings this week, followed by the Ohio State Buckeyes, Texas, BYU Cougars and Tennessee Volunteers, respectively, to round out the top five.

The Penn State Nittany Lions come in at No. 6 while the Indiana Hoosiers, Alabama Crimson Tide, Ole Miss Rebels and Georgia Bulldogs wrap up the top 10, respectively.

Gators take precipitous plunge in USA TODAY Sports re-rank after Week 11

Florida falls out of the USA TODAY Sports re-rank after the Week 11 loss to the Texas Longhorns.

It was a tough Saturday for Florida football, which fell to the Texas Longhorns on the road in Week 11, 49-17, in a game in which the Gators looked grossly overmatched.

Many of the problems stem from an excessive amount of injuries that have left [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] and Co. without many of their top playmakers. Of course, respect needs to be given to the victor — who is among the top teams in the nation this fall  — as well.

Following last weekend’s gridiron action, USA TODAY Sports writer Paul Myerberg submitted his re-ranking of all 134 Football Bowl Subdivision schools.

Florida’s re-rank after Week 11

Myerberg dropped the Gators 12 spots in his Week 11 update, falling from No. 45 to No. 57, which puts Florida between the No. 56 Baylor Bears and No. 58 Boston College Eagles. The Orange and Blue is ahead of just three other SEC programs: Kentucky Wildcats (No. 80), Auburn Tigers (No. 91) and Mississippi State Bulldogs (No. 108).

The Oregon Ducks remained in the top perch this week followed by the Ohio State Buckeyes, who also stood pat in their position. The Texas Longhorns are behind them at No. 3 while the Penn State Nittany Lions and Tennessee Volunteers, respectively, round out the top five teams.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish come in at No. 6, followed by the Indiana Hoosiers, BYU Cougars, Miami Hurricanes and Alabama Crimson Tide, respectively, to wrap up the top 10.

Florida football remains inside CBS Sports re-rank top 50 after Week 10

CBS Sports’ Week 10 re-rank has the Gators right on the fence of the top 50 teams in the nation.

Florida football dropped its fourth-straight matchup with the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday as the Gators’ woes against their biggest rival continue. This time around was particularly brutal, as the injury gods smote five-star freshman quarterback [autotag]DJ Lagway[/autotag] and others leading to a 34-20 defeat.

As we predicted here at Gators Wire, the game was much closer than most had expected. In fact, behind third-string walk-on quarterback [autotag]Aidan Warner[/autotag], things remained tight into the closing minutes, with the Orange and Blue tied with its SEC foe late in the fourth quarter.

The outcome was not optimal, but Florida showed it has that dog in them against the ‘Dawgs. CBS Sports writer Chip Patterson took note in this week’s re-rank and kept the Gators right where they were last week at No. 50 despite the defeat.

That puts [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] and Co. between the defending national champion Michigan Wolverines at No. 49 and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at No. 51.

The Oregon Ducks remain perched at No. 1 this week while the Ohio State Buckeyes crept up two spots to No. 2. Georgia slipped down one notch to No. 3 and the Miami Hurricanes and Indiana Hoosiers both rose to the fourth and fifth spots, respectively.

The Texas Longhorns come in at No. 6 followed by the Penn State Nittany Lions, BYU Cougars, Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Tennessee Volunteers, respectively, to wrap up the top 10.

What’s next for Florida?

The Gators will go on the road and face the Longhorns in Austin, Texas, on Saturday, Nov. 9. Kickoff is set for noon ET and will be broadcast on ABC.

Florida football slides just outside The Athletic’s Week 10 re-rank top 50

The Gators lost a little ground after the defeat in Jacksonville but the rerankers seem to be giving Florida some sympathy.

A lot was riding on Florida football’s rivalry matchup against the Georgia Bulldogs last weekend in Jacksonville, but unfortunately for the Gator Nation, things just did not pan out in favor of the Orange and Blue.

Despite a strong start to the game, which saw [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag]’s boys run out to a one-touchdown lead before losing their starting quarterback to a leg injury for the second time this season five minutes before the half. Still, Florida managed to carry a 13-6 lead into the locker room thanks to some solid defense and special teams play.

The Gators kept things close against one of the best college football programs over the past few years, tying the game up at 20 apiece late in the fourth quarter before the ‘Dawgs overwhelmed a decimated Florida roster for the final score.

While the loss was a huge blow to the team’s chances at six wins this fall as well as Napier’s tenure in Gainesville, the national media has sympathetically responded for the most part including The Athletic’s Chris Vannini, who penned his Week 10 rerank after the dust settled.

Florida’s re-rank after Week 10

Vannini’s update has the Gators down from No. 48 last week to No. 51 — a drop of only three spots. That puts them between the No. 50 North Carolina Tar Heels and No. 52 Michigan State Spartans.

Compare that with USA TODAY Sports, which re-ranked Florida at No. 45 — down one spot from the previous week.

As far as fellow SEC schools are concerned, only the Auburn Tigers (No. 67), Kentucky Wildcats (No. 68) and Mississippi State Bulldogs (No. 99) are ranked lower.

The Athletic’s Week 10 Top 10 re-rank

The Oregon Ducks maintain their top perch in the rankings this week, followed by the Georgia Bulldogs to repeat last week’s top two teams. Now, the Ohio State Buckeyes, Miami Hurricanes and Texas Longhorns round out the top five, respectively.

The BYU Cougars and Tennessee Volunteers both move up a spot to sixth and seventh, respectively, followed by the Penn State Nittany Lions who fell five pegs to No. 8. The Indiana Hoosiers and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, respectively, remain in the final two slots of the top 10.

Florida drops one spot in USA TODAY Sports re-rank after UGA loss

The Orange and Blue remain a top-50 team in USA TODAY Sports’ re-rank despite the loss to Georgia.

Florida football was dealt what felt like a death blow during Week 10 against the Georgia Bulldogs. It was a game of attrition, with both teams seeing significant injuries but the Gators got the worst of it.

Among the casualties from Saturday’s rivalry game was true freshman and recently anointed starting quarterback [autotag]DJ Lagway[/autotag], who went down with a leg injury that [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] later called a “pretty significant” hamstring issue. The Orange and Blue looked like it might pull off the upset as the halftime horn approached, but after losing Lagway, things got pretty grim.

While third-string walk-on QB [autotag]Aidan Warner[/autotag] — and Florida’s defense, in particular — managed to keep the team in the game until late in the fourth quarter, the prognosis moving forward is not looking good. Especially with the opponents lined up over the next three weeks.

The good news is that the loss did not have too much of an effect on where the Gators landed in the computer models as well as the human rankings this time around, including USA TODAY Sports‘ latest re-rank.

Florida’s re-rank after Week 10

Paul Myerberg docked Florida just one spot in his Week 10 update, dropping them from No. 44 to No. 45 — exactly where it was before the Week 9 bye. That puts the Gators between the No. 44 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and No. 46 Virginia Tech Hokies.

Billy Napier’s squad is ahead of four other SEC programs in the rankings, with the Arkansas Razorbacks (No. 50), Kentucky Wildcats (No. 77), Auburn Tigers (No. 89) and Mississippi State Bulldogs (No. 109) lagging behind Florida in the rankings.

USA TODAY Sports Week 10 re-rank top 10

The Oregon Ducks remained in the top perch this week followed by the Ohio State Buckeyes, who took over the second spot from Georgia, which comes in at third. The Miami Hurricanes and Penn State Nittany Lions wrap up the top five, respectively.

Coming in sixth are the Texas Longhorns, followed by the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Tennessee Volunteers, Indiana Hoosiers and BYU Cougars, respectively, to close out the top 10.

Week 9 bye results in slight drop for Florida in The Athletic’s re-rank

The Gators lost a little ground but are still a top-50 team in The Athletic’s Week 9 re-rank.

The Gators got their second bye of the 2024 college football campaign in Week 9 as Florida prepares for its inter-state rivalry matchup with the Georgia Bulldogs — who also had a bye — in Jacksonville this coming weekend.

Meanwhile, the rest of the show continued on the collegiate gridiron, resulting in a few changes in the national standings. The Southeastern Conference, in particular, has had more twists than an M. Night Shyamalan movie this fall — and that once again was the case on Saturday.

However, despite sitting out the weekend on the sidelines, the Orange and Blue dropped a couple of spots in The Athletic writer Chris Vannini’s re-rank following Week 9.

Florida’s re-rank after Week 9

Vannini’s update has the Gators down from No. 46 last week to No. 48 following the bye. That puts them between the No. 47 Washington Huskies and No. 49 Oklahoma Sooners.

Compare that with USA TODAY Sports, which re-ranked Florida at No. 44 — one spot better than the previous week — and the CBS Sports re-rank, which has Napier and Co. at No. 50.

As far as fellow SEC schools are concerned, only Oklahoma (No. 49), the Auburn Tigers (No. 61), Kentucky Wildcats (No. 62) and Mississippi State Bulldogs (No. 98) are ranked lower.

Florida hangs tight in CBS Sports re-rank following Week 9 bye

Florida is still a top-50 team in CBS Sports’ Week 9 re-ranked… but barely.

College football’s Week 9 once again saw some exciting efforts out on the field, particularly in the Southeastern Conference where the battle for the league crown as well as a berth in the playoffs rages on.

The Florida Gators, however, were not in action as they took their second bye of the fall to prepare for the annual rivalry game in Jacksonville against the Georgia Bulldogs — who also got a breather last weekend.

Given that the Orange and Blue was idle, it makes sense that the CBS Sports re-rank penned by Chip Patterson left [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] and Co. right where they were last week at No. 50. That puts Florida between the No. 49 Liberty Flames and No. 51 Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Meanwhile, most of the nation was out on the gridiron grind, which resulted in a few changes among the top 10 teams.

The Oregon Ducks remain perched at No. 1 this week while Georgia moved up two spots to No. 2, followed by the Penn State Nittany Lions who held tight at No. 3, the Ohio State Buckeyes who fell two spots to No. 4, and the Miami Hurricanes who stayed onto the No. 5 spot.

The Texas Longhorns and Indiana Hoosiers remain at Nos. 6 and 7, respectively, while the Iowa State Cyclones and BYU Cougars both moved up a spot to Nos. 8 and 9, respectively; the Clemson Tigers fell two spots to No. 10.

Florida inches up USA TODAY Sports re-rank following Week 9 bye

The Gators are still a top-50 team in USA TODAY Sports’ re-rank despite sitting out with a bye last weekend.

The Florida Gators enjoyed a bye on their college football schedule during Week 9 as they prepare for the biggest game of the fall next weekend. In the meantime, the collegiate gridiron was still ablaze with action, resulting in some changes in the polls and rankings.

The top eight in USA TODAY Sports’ re-rank put together by Paul Myerberg this week only saw one slight change — the Penn State Nittany Lions and Ohio State Buckeyes swapping the third and fourth positions, respectively. After that, there was quite a bit of shifting after yet another exciting weekend of competition, which resulted in the Gators gaining a wee bit of ground.

Florida’s Week 9 re-rank position

Myerberg lifted the Orange and Blue from No. 45 to No. 44 this week despite the Gators sitting on the sidelines. That wedges Florida between the No. 43 Virginia Tech Hokies and No. 45 USC Trojans.

Billy Napier’s squad is ahead of three other SEC programs in the rankings, with Kentucky Wildcats (No. 74), Auburn Tigers (No. 84) and Mississippi State Bulldogs (No. 108) lagging behind.

USA TODAY Sports Week 9 re-rank top 10

The Oregon Ducks remained in the top spot this week followed by the Georgia Bulldogs, whose positions remained unchanged. As mentioned above, Ohio State and Penn State trail behind at third and fourth, respectively, and the Miami Hurricanes clinch the top five.

Coming in sixth are the Iowa State Cyclones, followed by the Texas Longhorns, Clemson Tigers, Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Kansas State Wildcats, respectively, to wrap up the top 10.

Florida surges in CBS Sports college football re-rank after Week 8

The win over the Wildcats now has Florida in the top 50 of the three major re-ranks.

Gator Nation received some much-needed encouragement from the Florida football program last Saturday — on homecoming, no less — when their beloved team blew out the Kentucky Wildcats in the Swamp, 48-20.

The win showcased some of the best that both the offense and defense had to offer in one of the most complete efforts of the [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] era. Two true freshmen exceeded expectations on offense while the defense grabbed as many interceptions in one night as it did the entire 2023 campaign (three).

Many were impressed with the victory — in fact, the USA TODAY Sports and The Athletic re-ranks both gave the Gators a big boost in their respective weekly re-assessments of all 134 FBS schools. CBS Sports writer Chip Patterson also elevated the Orange and Blue in his latest offering, pushing it up 18 spots to No. 50 overall.

That nestles Florida between Napier’s former job, the No. 49 Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns, and the No. 51 Oklahoma Sooners, who have experienced a rude welcome to the SEC this fall.

CBS Sports re-rank top 10

The Oregon Ducks took over the top spot this week after the SEC continued to eat itself, with the now-fourth-place Georgia Bulldogs dethroning the now-sixth-ranked Texas Longhorns from the No. 1 position. The Ohio State Buckeyes, Penn State Nittany Lions and Miami Hurricanes fill out the remaining top five, respectively.

The rest of the top 10 consists of Texas, followed by the Indiana Hoosiers, Clemson Tigers, Iowa State Cyclones and BYU Tigers, respectively.

Coming up for the Gators

The Gators are off next week due to their bye week. The next matchup for Florida will be against Georgia on Nov. 2 in Jacksonville. That game will kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET and can be seen on ABC.
