Falcons sign two players to practice squad, release two others

Falcons make multiple changes to practice squad, bring back LB Rashaan Evans…

The Atlanta Falcons made multiple changes to their practice squad on Monday afternoon. The team signed linebacker Rashaan Evans and offensive lineman Tyrone Wheatley Jr. while releasing offensive lineman Coy Cronk and outside linebacker Monty Rice.

Evans, a former first-round pick, played for the Falcons in 2022 under defensive coordinator Dean Pees. The 28-year-old led the team with 159 tackles (86 solo), adding two sacks and a forced fumble in 17 starts. Evans was signed to the practice squad a few weeks ago but released in Week 6.

Wheatley, 27, went undrafted before signing with the Chicago Bears in 2021. He would bounce around before appearing in two games for the New England Patriots during the 2023 season. His father, Tyrone Wheatley Sr., was a star at the University of Michigan and a first-round pick in the 1995 NFL draft.

According to Falcons reporter Terrin Waack, Atlanta also released linebacker Milo Eifler from the injured reserve list. Check out the Falcons’ updated 53-man roster and practice squad entering NFL Week 8.

Falcons sign Kevin King to practice squad, release linebacker

Falcons sign DB Kevin King to practice squad, release linebacker Rashaan Evans…

The Atlanta Falcons made a few last-minute moves ahead of this weekend’s game against the Carolina Panthers. Linebacker Nate Landman was activated after spending the last four weeks on the injured reserve list.

On Friday, the team released cornerback Kevin King to free up a roster spot for Landman. King was then re-signed to the practice squad on Saturday and elevated to the active roster for Sunday’s game.

The Falcons released veteran linebacker Rashaan Evans from the practice squad in a corresponding move on Saturday. With starting inside linebacker Troy Andersen ruled out for the second straight week, Landman should get plenty of playing time in Week 6.

The Carolina Panthers will host the Falcons at Bank of America Stadium on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET. The Panthers have lost two straight games and are 1-4 on the season.

Former No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young was replaced by Andy Dalton in the team’s Week 3 win over the Raiders. Since then, Carolina has lost two straight games, including a 26-point loss to the Chicago Bears in Week 5.

Former star Alabama linebacker signs with NFL team

The former Alabama star is now back in the NFL.

Having not played so far this season, former Alabama Crimson Tide standout linebacker and current free agent Rashaan Evans has reportedly signed a deal with the Atlanta Falcons to join the team’s practice squad.

Evans, a six-year NFL veteran, last played during the 2023 season with the Dallas Cowboys where he saw action in nine games with one start. Over that span, Evans had nine tackles.

A former four-year player at Alabama from 2014-17, Evans was originally selected in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft by the Tennessee Titans where he spent four seasons in the organization through 2021. Evans has also spent time with the Falcons in 2022, as well as the Cowboys as mentioned above, and holds career totals of 485 tackles, 21 TFL, and five sacks across 85 games.

The former Alabama linebacker now returns to the same organization where he had likely the best season of his career in 2022, starting in all 17 games to post a career-high 159 tackles, six TFL, and two sacks.

Falcons add linebacker depth by signing veteran to practice squad

Falcons sign familiar face to practice squad as team looks to add linebacker depth

The Atlanta Falcons were already thin at the inside linebacker position before Troy Andersen went down during Sunday’s 26-24 win over the New Orleans Saints. Andersen led the team in tackles (17) and recorded a pick-six before suffering a knee injury in the fourth quarter.

Andersen did not return in Week 4 but head coach Raheem Morris will address the injury on Monday afternoon. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Falcons have signed inside linebacker Rashaan Evans to their 16-man practice squad.

Evans, 28, was selected in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft by the Tennessee Titans. After spending four seasons in Tennessee, he signed in Atlanta as a free agent in 2022.

Evans started all 17 games for the Falcons that season, leading the team with 159 tackles (86 solo) while adding two sacks and two fumble recoveries.

The Falcons worked out Evans along with a couple of other linebackers when Nate Landman was placed on the injured reserve list a few weeks ago. Check back later for an update on Andersen.

Falcons work out trio of linebackers, including familiar face

The Falcons worked out three linebackers on Friday, including one familiar face

The Atlanta Falcons could be without linebacker Nate Landman in Week 2 and are looking at some potential reinforcements. Landman missed his second straight practice on Friday due to calf and quadriceps injuries, putting his status up in the air.

According to NFL Network reporter Mike Garafolo, the Falcons worked out three linebackers, including Rashaan Evans, who started 17 games and led the team in tackles in 2022. Former Pro Bowler Kwon Alexander and veteran Josh Woods also worked out for Atlanta on Friday, per Garafolo.

Evans, 28, was drafted in the first round by the Tennessee Titans in 2018. The former Alabama standout has 68 career starts but played in just nine games (one start) for the Dallas Cowboys under former Falcons head coach Dan Quinn last season. Evans has 485 career tackles (286 solo), five sacks and two interceptions since 2018.

Alexander, 30, was once a young star for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The former fourth-round pick spent his first four seasons with the Buccaneers, earning a Pro Bowl berth in 2017. Alexander has played for several teams, including the San Francisco 49ers, New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers.

The former LSU linebacker has been a tackling machine for the last decade, racking up 631 tackles (445 solo), 13.5 sacks and nine interceptions. While both Alexander and Evans have the experience advantage over Woods, the 28-year-old started more games than the other two combined last season.

Woods, a former undrafted free agent out of Maryland, appeared in 11 games (seven starts) for the Cardinals in 2023.

Cowboys 53-man roster for Week 17: Activating OT, waiving LB and how latter can return

The Cowboys are adding OL depth but taking it from the LBs. Here’s the 53-man and PS, along w/ an explanation of how Rashaan Evans can play Sat. despite his elevations being up. | From @KDDrummondNFL @ToddBrock24f7

The Cowboys are beefing up an offensive area of concern for the regular season stretch run, including Saturday against the Detroit Lions, and for the playoffs. But to do it, they’re cutting depth on the defensive side.

The club waived linebacker Rashaan Evans on Wednesday and activated offensive lineman Matt Waletzko from injured reserve. Evans has an interesting potential path back to the roster.

Waletzko, a 24-year-old swing tackle who was a fifth-round draft pick out of North Dakota in 2022, suffered a shoulder injury during the preseason and had his 21-day practice window opened on Dec. 6. The 6-foot-8 Waletzko appeared in just three games last year as a rookie before an issue with his other shoulder forced him to injured reserve.

Left tackle Tyron Smith missed another game in Week 16. His backup, Chuma Edoga, and right tackle Terence Steele have struggled at times this season. Waletzko has impressed when healthy enough to play or practice; his considerable size may come in handy for a unit that’s allowed 14 sacks over the past four outings.

Evans joined the Cowboys practice squad as a free agent in October and after being elevated the maximum three times, he was added to the active roster in mid-November.

NFL rules state that if a player reaches his maximum of three elevations and is then added to the active roster, he can get the elevation counter reset and rejoin the practice squad if he clears waivers.

So if no other team wants Evans, for themselves or simply to handcuff a fellow playoff contender, he could be back on the Cowboys and active again for the Week 17 game against Detroit.

The sixth-year veteran has appeared in nine games, amassing 71 defensive snaps and logging nine tackles. He also played 79 snaps on special teams.

The linebacker position has been tough for Dallas in 2023. Leighton Vander Esch was lost to a midseason injury that some fear may be career-ending. Third-round draft pick DeMarvion Overshown went down for the year with a preseason injury.

Damone Clark has seen heavy usage as a result, but the 2022 fifth-round pick out of LSU has been hit-or-miss with his production.

With Evans gone, Tyrus Wheat, Malik Jefferson and Buddy Johnson are the team’s other options at linebacker; the latter two are on the practice squad.

Here’s a look at the club’s full 53-man roster and 16-man practice squad, noting which of the PS guys still have elevations remaining to try and help the team get win No. 11 against Detroit on Saturday night.

Former Alabama LB Rashaan Evans signed to Dallas Cowboys practice squad

Former Alabama linebacker was signed to the Dallas Cowboys practice squad on Wednesday evening. Evans spent the 2022 season with the Atlanta Falcons.

Former Alabama linebacker Rashaan Evans signed a deal with the Dallas Cowboys practice squad on Wednesday evening. Evans is coming off one of the best seasons of his professional career a season ago.

In 2022, Evans played for the Atlanta Falcons and led the team with 159 tackles. He played and started in all 17 games as well.

The Alabama native has had success dating back to his days with the Crimson Tide. During his college career, Evans was named a First-team All-American and All-SEC selection during his senior season.

It will be interesting to see if Evans can re-harness his success in Dallas. He will have an opportunity to work his way up from the practice squad and earn a spot on the active roster in the near future. Cowboys starting linebacker Leighton Vander Esch recently suffered a neck injury that could result in him going on the injured reserve.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow former Alabama players in the NFL.

Report: Cowboys hosting former 1st rounder Rashaan Evans, potential LB help

From @ToddBrock24f7: Rashaan Evans has 67 starts in his 5 NFL seasons and could step into an immediate role in Dallas after Leighton Vander Esch’s latest injury.

A linebacking corps already perilously thin heading into the Cowboys’ Week 5 showdown with San Francisco took a serious blow with Leighton Vander Esch’s latest neck injury.

And while the team has yet to make any definitive moves because of the 27-year-old’s prognosis, Dallas appears to be planning to bring in reinforcements at the position, with Vander Esch being a likely candidate for injured reserve.

Former first-round draft pick Rashaan Evans is at The Star on Wednesday on a free agent visit with the Cowboys, according to a report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Evans was the 22nd overall selection, by Tennessee, in 2018’s draft. Vander Esch was taken by the Cowboys just three picks earlier that same year.

An Alabama alum, Evans played four seasons for the Titans, starting 50 regular-season games and four playoff contests. In that time, he was in on an impressive 317 tackles and racked up 15 TFLs, 13 QB hits, three sacks, eight defended passes, two interceptions, a forced fumble, and three fumble recoveries (one of which he returned for a touchdown).

After Tennessee elected not to re-sign him, Evans moved to Atlanta on a one-year deal for the 2022 season. He started all 17 games for the Falcons, logging 159 tackles, six TFLs, three QB hits, two sacks, four defended passes, a forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries.

Evans spent three days on the Eagles’ practice squad last month.

The Cowboys coaching staff admitted shortly after Sunday’s loss that Vander Esch’s injury could cause some shuffling within their defense. Second-year man Damone Clark is currently the only remaining linebacker on the active roster in Dallas; promising rookie DeMarvion Overshown was lost in the preseason to injury and Devin Harper was poached by the Bengals two weeks ago. Malik Jefferson and Mikel Jones reside on the practice squad.

Whispers of the club acquiring additional linebacker depth via trade or free agency started immediately following the Cowboys’ 42-10 loss on Sunday.

Defensive coordinator Dan Quinn even acknowledged that Dallas’s situation could necessitate hybrid edge rusher Micah Parsons playing more snaps at his original linebacker position. But with the numbers definitively showing that Parsons has far more impact playing on the defensive line, bringing a new body to replace Vander Esch would likely be preferable.
