Toronto has won 5 of 6 and has been playing some of its best basketball of the season. The Celtics are not as healthy as the Raptors and are coming off an intense game at the 76ers. Toronto is off back-to-back easy wins at the shorthanded Hornets and should be better rested than the Celtics as it fights for higher seeding in the Eastern Conference standings.

PASS.

Toronto has been playing up to the level of its competition lately and is 6-1 ATS in its last 7 games vs. teams with a winning percentage above .600. If you prefer to take the 2.5 points (-110) with the Raptors, I wouldn’t blame you.

I have Toronto winning straight up, so I’m not going to bother taking the points and paying the higher -110 price with the spread.

The Raptors, led by a trio of ultra-talented forwards (rookie Scottie Barnes, OG Anunoby and Pascal Siakam) are coming in as underdogs. Siakam just made his season debut, scoring 15 in 25 minutes.

Toronto lost by 13 to the Nets in their last outing. It’s been a season of streaks for the Raptors, having won five straight and now having lost two in a row. They’ll face a Jaylen Brown-less Celtics.

The Cs will undoubtedly depend on G Dennis Schroder and SF Jayson Tatum. Tatum is averaging 23.6 points per game yet is shooting under 40 percent from the field.

While Tatum will be the best player on the court, Anunoby, Barnes, and Siakam may be the next three. All three are also above-average defenders which makes it ideal for taking on a Brown-less Cs.

The Raptors have the 10th-best defensive rating. They also have the 14th-best offensive rating. The Celtics are below them in each.

They shouldn’t be underdogs, so get them while you can. With Fred VanVleet running the show and defensive-minded Gary Trent Jr. also on the roster, the Raptors are loaded with talent.

The Raptors also crash the boards hard, ranking first in offensive rebounding rate. The Celtics are in the bottom ten in defensive rebounding rate. Expect the Raptors to dominate the glass and the game.

Against the spread

PASS on the Raptors +2.5 (-115) as I’m not a fan of hanging a couple of points on the underdogs. I’d rather go straight for the money line here as it provides plus-money value.

Over/Under

“LEAN” on the OVER 209.5 (-110) as the better of two sides.

The Raptors are 10th and the Celtics are 12th in defensive rating. The Cs, with veteran Al Horford down low and Marcus Smart on the perimeter, have top-tier defenders.

Also, both teams rank in the bottom half of the league in pace with the Raptors second to last. With that in mind, this should be a close, half-court heavy matchup.

Toronto got clubbed by the Washington Wizards 98-83 in its season opener as a 2.5-point home favorite. The Raptors held the Wizards to just 19% from behind the arc but were outscored 56-40 in the paint.

Boston lost a thrilling double-overtime game 138-134 at the New York Knicks Wednesday. Guard Jaylen Brown scored 46 points on 16-for-30 shooting with 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Like Toronto, Boston lost its season opener because New York outscored the Celtics 60-42 in the paint.

Boston beat Toronto in all three regular-season meetings last year (2-1 against the spread). Forward Jayson Tatum had his way with the Raptors last season, averaging 28.0 points per game on 70.3% true shooting (.532/.529/.862) with 8.0 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game.

Money line

PASS because Boston is the right side in this game but the Celtics (-220) is a little out of my price range for most favorites in NBA regular-season action.

Against the spread

BET the CELTICS -6.5 (-110) for 1 unit because I’m much lower on Toronto’s roster this season than Boston’s and I expect a bounce-back game from Tatum after a rough opening night.

Tatum crushed the Raptors last season and Toronto’s wing defense has to be weakened with Siakam out of the lineup. Tatum was 7-of-30 against the Knicks Thursday and missed a whole bunch of shots he usually makes.

I have more faith in Boston’s ability to play interior defense than Toronto’s. The Celtics have a quality rim protector in C Robert Williams and should be getting Horford back Friday.

VanVleet being the focal point of Toronto’s offense is concerning for the long term and in this matchup. Celtics guard Marcus Smart has defended VanVleet well when they’ve met.

VanVleet is scoring just 7.7 points per game on 23.9% field goal shooting (25.0% 3-point shooting) against Smart in their six meetings.

Over/Under

“LEAN” to the UNDER 218.5 (-112) for a half unit because this is a “Pros vs. Joe’s” game with the presumed sharp money backing the Under but the public is betting the Over according to Pregame.com at the time of publishing.

Typically, it’s wise in sports betting to follow the money especially when it’s flowing in the opposite direction as the public.

Toronto scored just 83 points against a Washington team who’s been terrible defensively for the past few seasons and is incorporating new players into its scheme.

The grossly undermanned Raptors suffered a 129-105 loss at the hands of the Detroit Pistons on their 2020-21 home court of Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla., Wednesday. The 24-point loss was Toronto’s worst of the season. The Raptors were without three of their top-five leading scorers.

The Celtics have won three straight home games to get back above .500. They beat the Los Angeles Clippers 117-112 Tuesday. All three victories were by 6 or fewer points.

Boston has beaten Toronto by scores of 126-114 and 120-106 this season. This will be the final meeting of the regular season.

The CELTICS -8 (-110) have topped the Raptors twice by double-digit margins this season and have everything in their favor for Thursday’s matchup. Toronto remains shorthanded, and that’ll be seen even more on the second night of a back-to-back.

SG Norman Powell led the Raps with 36 points in Wednesday’s blowout loss. PG Kyle Lowry added 21 but just three other players scored in double digits. Toronto was worse on defense with three Pistons players topping 20 points and six putting up double digits. The Raps were outrebounded by 14 and allowed the Pistons to shoot .527 from the field.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the OVER 217.5 (-110) as Toronto’s defense was absent Wednesday, and the back-to-back will emphasize the weakness of the shortened bench. The Raptors and Pistons sailed past a projected total of 211 Wednesday.

Boston hit the Over in six of its last eight games and hung 120-plus points on the Raps twice this season.

The Raptors crushed the Washington Wizards 137-115 Wednesday. They jumped out to a 40-28 lead after 12 minutes and won the fourth quarter 34-22 to easily cover a 5.5-point spread as favorites. It was Toronto’s fifth win in its last six games and it covered the spread in each victory while playing to the Over in seven straight games.

The Celtics are coming off back-to-back losses to the Phoenix Suns (100-91) and Utah Jazz (122-108) Sunday and Tuesday, respectively. They just finished a five-game road trip of their own and will play their first home game since Jan. 30 – a 96-95 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Celtics (-175) should win this game but PASS on the pricey money line. There’s too much risk for too little reward against a Raptors team playing its best basketball of the season. Toronto is third in the NBA in net rating (9.6) over its last five games, all on the road.

Boston has dropped three of four and five of seven and has a net rating of minus-3.8 over the seven-game window; however, the Celtics are returning home and have the rest advantage over the Raps. Toronto is 0-4 straight up with a rest disadvantage and 0-3 on the second half of a back-to-back.

The CELTICS -3.5 (-115) should be backed to win by at least 4 points for a more worthwhile return on investment.

The Raptors are third in the league in 3-point attempts per game (41.3) and fifth in 3-point percentage (39.1%) but the Celtics allow the seventh-fewest attempts (32.9) and eighth-lowest success rate (36.1%) from behind the arc.
