Gators hoops dips in KenPom ratings despite 5-0 start

A pair of lackluster second halves against Florida State and Florida A&M have the Florida Gators down two spots in the KenPom ratings.

Despite a 5-0 start to the college basketball season, Florida dropped two spots to No. 20 in the KenPom ratings thanks to a relatively weak non-conference schedule.

A net rating of plus-20.74 is nearly a point higher than a week ago, but other teams have put together a better early-season resume to the Gators, including the Kentucky Wildcats, who leapfrogged Florida after an upset win over Duke. Seven SEC teams are inside the top 25, including the Orange and Blue.

Auburn (plus-30.69) tops the ratings followed by Tennessee (plus-26.18, 6th), Alabama (plus-23.12, 11th), Texas A&M (plus-22.26, 15th), Kentucky (plus-21.55, 19th), Florida and Texas (plus-19.87, 24th).

Many college hoops experts and oddsmakers consider Pomeroy’s ratings the gold standard in the sport, and the reputation has held for more than 20 years.

“His ratings are derived from a proprietary algorithm, with the core centered on the Pythagorean calculation for expected winning percentage, made famous by baseball statistician Bill James,” ESPN explains.

“Pomeroy’s formula is designed to be purely predictive, with an emphasis on margin of victory. He factors in offensive and defensive efficiency, tempo and even luck, but does not, however, take into consideration injuries or emotional factors.”

Since we last checked in with KenPom, Florida’s offense has improved by almost a point and the defense has held steady. A two-spot jump in the offensive ratings is a positive, especially because Florida hasn’t shot the ball well from three-point range, and a two-spot dip on defense isn’t too concerning since the rating stayed the same.

Florida defeated Florida State, 87-74, on Friday and beat Florida A&M, 84-60, on Tuesday. The Gators dominated both first halves this week but allowed the Seminoles and Rattlers to make the second half competitive. Head coach Todd Golden is looking to get a better effort from his players coming out of the break moving forward.

Florida’s adjusted tempo continues to drop, now at 71.7 after a preseason projection of 73.6. The Gators were one of the fastest-paced programs in the country a year ago but are now outside the top 50. With SEC play still ahead, the number figures to drop more.

Because Florida was expected to win all five games it’s played this year, the luck rating remains at triple zeroes. No movement is a good thing in this statistical category, given the circumstances.

Strength of Schedule according to KenPom

KenPom’s strength of schedule ratings only considers the games played, so Florida’s 239th ranking isn’t as concerning as it may seem on paper. Golden has the group playing lesser opponents early on, and the Florida State game is a staple of the non-conference schedule. Still, the Gators have only faced one program inside the top 100 so far (Florida State, 79th).

South Florida (124th) and Grambling State (229th) have both climbed since playing Florida, while Jacksonville (191st) held steady. Florida A&M (352nd) remains one of the worst teams in college hoops right now.

Many of the non-Power Four programs Florida plays early on have a chance to improve their ratings during conference play.

Florida plays No. 131 Southern Illinois on Friday, but then come matchups against No. 84 Wake Forest and either No. 77 Minnesota or No. 93 Wichita State.

Florida moves up three spots in ESPN Basketball Power Index after 5-0 start

Wins over Florida State and FAMU have the Florida Gators up three spots on ESPN’s Basketball Power Index.

Florida remains undefeated through five games to start the 2024-25 college basketball season, and the Gators keep moving up the ESPN Basketball Power Index as a result.

The Orange and Blue are up three spots to No. 32 from a week ago, with a 12.8 BPI, further broken down as 7.9 (23rd) on offense and 4.9 (64th) on defense. All three of those figures are up from our last update (12.6, 7.7 and 4.8), but the Gators dropped three spots in the offensive rankings and moved up two on defense.

“The College Basketball Power Index (BPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of performance going forward,” ESPN explains. “BPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Strength of Record (SOR) is a measure of team accomplishment based on how difficult a team’s W-L record is to achieve. Game predictions account for opponent strength, pace of play, site, travel distance, day’s rest and altitude, and are used to simulate the season 10,000 times to produce season projections.”

ESPN BPI Projections

ESPN now projects Florida to finish the season with a 19.1-10.9 overall record (0.1 more wins than after Week 1) and an 8.7-9.3 record in conference play (0.3 fewer) based on results to date and BPI-based projections for remaining scheduled games. The Gators only have 0.8% odds to win the conference, down from 1.3% a week ago.

Florida faces the 26th-toughest schedule moving forward with two weak non-conference opponents out of the way.

NCAA Tournament/Resume

The defeated start has the Gators ranked 14th overall in strength of record, which translates to a No. 4 seed if the season were to end today. Last week, the Gators were a projected No. 6 seed.

Florida has only played non-conference opponents, which makes its strength of schedule very low (207th). Many of these numbers will change drastically once the beefier portion of the non-conference schedule begins, and again when SEC play starts up.

ESPN gives Florida 0.2% odds of winning the NCAA Tournament and 0.3% odds of making it to the championship game. A Final Four appearance (1.3%) or Elite Eight appearance (4.2%) are both unlikely at this point, but a Sweet 16 (13.2%) and Round of 32 appearance (39.0%) have better odds.

Florida in CBS Sports Top 25 And 1 rankings ahead of FAMU game

Another rankings, another top-25 appearance for the Florida men’s basketball team.

Florida basketball is off to a strong start to the 2024-25 campaign, sporting a perfect 4-0 record so far and a top-25 ranking in both the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll and AP Poll.

The Gators also sit high in many of the secondary rankings such as the Top 25 And 1 put together by Gary Parrish for CBS Sports. After two weeks of play, the Orange and Blue are ranked 23rd sitting between the No. 22 Creighton Bluejays and No. 24 Rutgers Scarlett Knights.

“Walter Clayton Jr. finished with 25 points and five rebounds in Friday’s 87-74 win at Florida State,” Parrish notes. “The Gators’ next game is Tuesday against Florida A&M.”

Gators hoops drop in AP Poll’s top 25 despite perfect start

Despite an undefeated start to the 2024-25 college basketball season, AP Top 25 voters dropped the Florida Gators down a spot after Week 2.

Florida (4-0) has yet to win a game by fewer than 13 points, but the AP Top 25 voters still dropped the Gators one spot to No. 21 in the latest poll update.

The Gators took down Grambling State by 24 points on Monday and handed Florida State its first loss of the season in Tallahassee on Friday. The dip in the polls has more to do with the teams ahead of Florida, specifically Wisconsin, than the Gators’ performance.

Florida received just 30 fewer points than a week ago, but an undefeated start from Wisconsin, including a win over then-No.9 Arizona, moves the Gators down a spot.

SEC Teams ranked inside the AP Top 25

The Southeastern Conference boasts seven programs inside the top 25 after two weeks of play. The Auburn Tigers lead the conference at No. 4 and earned three first-place votes. The Alabama Crimson Tide (No. 8) and Kentucky Wildcats (No. 9) give the SEC three teams inside the top 10, and the No. 11 Tennessee Volunteers are close behind.

Florida trails the No. 20 Arkansas Razorbacks by 11 poll points, and the Texas A&M Aggies (No. 23) round out the list. Ole Miss earned 103 points in the voting, making the Rebels the unofficial No. 27 team in the country, while the Texas Longhorns (17) and Mississippi State Bulldogs (15) also received votes.

Taysom Hill climbs higher among Saints’ all-time leading scorers

Taysom Hill added to his legacy in Sunday’s contest against the Browns, breaking his tie with Pierre Thomas in the Saints’ all-time record books:

Taysom Hill is rungs higher on the list of all-time leading scorers with his 10-yard rushing touchdown against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.

Hill has now broken his tie with Pierre Thomas for touchdowns scored in Saints history. He now sits at ninth overall with 42 touchdowns combined between his efforts as a runner, receiver and returner, a perfect illustration of just how much of a Swiss army knife he truly is. Eric Martin is next ahead of him with 48 touchdowns scored.

Several teams have tried to replicate Hill over the years and have failed to this point, and it’s easy to get the sense there may never be another quite like him. The Saints get to reap the fortune of that at the rest of the league’s expense.

Sunday’s touchdown run marked the 13th rushing touchdown in his career.

Hill came into the game with 10 receptions on 14 targets for 100 yards, also totaling 130 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 27 carries.

How he continues to add to his legacy both in this game and down the rest of the schedule will be something to watch.

The Saints lead the Browns, 7-6 at the top of the second quarter.

Florida football vs. LSU ranked among The Athletic’s Top 10 games for Week 12

The Athletic includes the Gators matchup with LSU in their top 10 ranking of best games for Week 12.

Florida football’s matchup with the LSU Tigers on Saturday was noted by The Athletic as the sixth-most intriguing game in Week 12.

And there’s a reason for that.

LSU has found themselves in an absolute must-win game after suffering a blowout loss in Death Valley last week against the Alabama Crimson Tide. A Tigers win keeps their slim hopes of reaching the SEC Championship alive.

But, the Gators are looking to play spoiler makers. And they still have a shot at bowl eligibility with two more wins. So it’s not like Florida’s season is over (yet).

The Gators hope to bounce back and gain momentum as head coach Billy Napier announced on Thursday that freshman quarterback DJ Lagway is expected to return from injury.

Sports writer Justin Williams included the Florida-LSU matchup in his list of the Top 10 college football games in Week 12.

Here’s what he had to write.

What The Athletic said about the matchup

“If you’re wondering why this game, between two teams that got thumped last week, is this high on the list, it’s because there remains a rather plausible roadmap by which LSU can still make the SEC Championship Game,” Williams wrote. “But that would require the Tigers to win out the rest of the regular season, starting with a trip to Gainesville.

“Florida hopes to have freshman quarterback DJ Lagway back from injury, and LSU is in need of serious defensive soul-searching after getting diced up by mobile quarterbacks Marcel Reed and Jalen Milroe in back-to-back losses, allowing a combined 80 points and 11 rushing touchdowns to Texas A&M and Alabama.”

The Athletic’s Top 10 Week 12 games

10. No. 23 Missouri at No. 21 South Carolina

9. No. 20 Clemson at Pitt

8. No. 13 Boise State at San Jose State

7. Arizona State at No. 16 Kansas State

6. No. 22 LSU at Florida

5. No. 1 Oregon at Wisconsin

4. Kansas at No. 6 BYU

3. Utah at No. 17 Colorado

2. No. 3 Texas at Arkansas

1. No. 7 Tennessee at No. 12 Georgia

Four Big Ten teams, Wisconsin’s upcoming opponent lead Week 11 College Football Playoff rankings

Four Big Ten teams, Wisconsin’s upcoming opponent lead Week 11 College Football Playoff rankings

Four Big Ten teams land in the top five of the latest College Football Playoff rankings after Week 11 of the 2024 season.

The Oregon Ducks (10-0, 7-0 Big Ten) lead the way at No. 1, followed by Ohio State (8-1, 5-1 Big Ten) at No. 2, Penn State (8-1, 5-1 Big Ten) at No. 4 and Indiana (10-0, 7-0 Big Ten) at No. 5.

The Ducks, who are currently favored to capture the Big Ten title, will grab the No. 1 seed in the projected bracket based on those rankings. Ohio State is down at No. 5 as the top at-large team, while Penn State and Indiana are at No. 6 and No. 7, respectively.

The updated 12-team bracket gives first-round byes to the four highest-ranked conference champions. The No. 5 seed plays No. 12, No. 6 plays No. 11, and so on — all first-round games on the campus of the higher-ranked team.

Once the field is cut to eight teams, the participants populate top bowl matchups including the Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl and Cotton Bowl.

Wisconsin is obviously far from contention with a 5-4 record through nine games. The Badgers have lost to several projected playoff participants — No. 10 Alabama and No. 4 Penn State. Most significantly, the team hosts No. 1 Oregon at Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday.

The Badgers will be looking for their first win over an AP (and CFP) No. 1-ranked team since they defeated No. 1 Ohio State in 2010. A win would shake-up the national landscape with little time remaining before the conclusion of the regular season.

Where Gators basketball ranks in BPI after undefeated first week

A 3-0 start for Florida has the Gators ranked 35th on the ESPN Basketball Power Index and projected as a No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Following a 3-0 start to the 2024-25 college basketball season, the Florida Gators are ranked 35th on the ESPN Basketball Power Index.

The Orange and Blue sport a 12.6 BPI, broken down further as 7.7 (20th) on offense and 4.8 (66th) on defense.

ESPN projects Florida to finish the season with a 19-11 overall record and a 9-9 record in conference play based on results to date and BPI-based projections for remaining scheduled games. The Gators only have 1.3% odds to win the conference. Florida faces the 32nd-toughest schedule moving forward.

NCAA Tournament/Resume

Florida’s 3-0 start has the Gators ranked 23rd overall in strength of record, which translates to a No. 6 seed if the season were to end today. Florida has only played non-conference opponents ranked well below the top 100, which makes its strength of schedule very low (203rd). Many of these numbers will change drastically once the beefier portion of the non-conference schedule begins, and again when SEC play starts up.

ESPN gives Florida 0.1% odds of winning the NCAA Tournament and 0.7% odds of making it to the championship game. A Final Four appearance (1.9%) or Elite Eight appearance (5.1%) are both unlikely at this point, but a Sweet 16 (14.3%) and Round of 32 appearance (36.3%) have better odds.

Florida basketball cracks KenPom top 20 after 3-0 start

A 3-0 start for the Florida men’s basketball team has the Gators moving up the KenPom ratings heading into Week 2 of the regular season.

The first week of college basketball is in the books, and the Florida Gators are off to the first 3-0 start under head coach [autotag]Todd Golden[/autotag]. The undefeated start has also led to a bump in the KenPom rantings, where the Orange are Blue are now ranked No. 20 among the 364 teams considered.

A net rating of plus-19.83 moves Florida up eight spots overall and into the No. 5 spots among SEC teams. Auburn (plus-29.87) tops the ratings followed by Tennessee (plus-24.34, 9th), Alabama (plus-23.94, 10th) and Texas A&M (plus-20.61, 17th).

Through three games, Florida’s offense is better than expected (117.2, 13th) and the defense is worse than expected (97.4, 49th), according to the preseason numbers.

Golden’s offseason focus was on defense, and a dip in the ratings doesn’t mean a failure. Florida’s defense ended the 2023-24 campaign ranked 94th in efficiency. Staying within the top 50 through the season’s first week is a positive sign and may indicate some improvement.

The Gators allowed 83 points to South Florida in the season opener but held Jacksonville to 60 and Grambling State to 62 after that.

Florida is also playing a bit slower than expected, with a 73.2 adjusted tempo rating; however, that number is only down 0.4 from Pomeroy’s preseason projection and is 1.2 possessions ahead of last year’s final figure. It’s still very early in the season, so expect the Gators to creep up the rankings while maintaining a similar number in this category.

Because Florida was expected to win all three games it’s played this year, the luck rating remains at triple zeroes. Considering the circumstances, no movement is a good thing in this statistical category. Other SEC teams haven’t been as fortunate — for example, Texas A&M has a negative luck rating after losing the season opener to UCF.

Strength of Schedule according to KenPom

KenPom’s strength of schedule ratings only considers the games played, so Florida’s 237th ranking isn’t a problem. South Florida is the best team UF has faced so far, and the Bulls are ranked 125th in the country right now.

Jacksonville is ranked 191st and Grambling State is 224th, but all three schools that have lost to Florida could climb up the rankings if they do well within their conference. Grambling State is the best SWAC team and Jacksonville is ranked fourth among teams in the ASUN Conference, according to KenPom.

A strong non-conference strength of schedule is important for teams with NCAA Tournament hopes, such as Florida. The Gators can’t control the SEC schedule, but the staff can set up games against quality opponents to fill out the calendar. Wins against decent teams can make all the difference when it comes time for Selection Sunday and seeding.

Gators hoops bumped up a spot in AP Poll after perfect opening week

The Gators are among to top 20 teams in the AP Poll after the opening week of men’s college hoops.

Todd Golden and the Florida Gators are off to a strong start to the 2024-25 college basketball campaign, earning wins over the South Florida Bulls and Jacksonville Dolphins, respectively, in the opening week.

While there is still a long way to go during the regular season, those two victories already represent a better opening salvo for the hoops program after going 1-1 last fall en route to a rough November. Fortunately, the Orange and Blue found another gear in the second half, propelling it to the semifinal round of the SEC Tournament.

As a result of their efforts, the Gators saw a one-spot improvement from the preseason standings in the Associated Press Poll following Week 1, moving up to No. 20. That puts Florida between the No. 19 Kentucky Wildcats and No. 21 Ohio State Buckeyes.
