Rangers at Maple Leafs projected goalies

Igor Shesterkin (2-0-1, 2.28 GAA, .921 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Anthony Stolarz (2-1-0, 1.70 GAA, .940 SV%)

Shesterkin bounced back from a 6-5 OTL against the Utah Hockey Club last Saturday, giving up just a single goal on 32 shots in a 4-1 victory at Madison Square Garden against the Red Wings Monday night.

He was 1-1-1 with a 3.61 GAA and .885 SV% in 3 starts against the Leafs last season, including 31 saves on 34 shots in a 4-3 SOL in Toronto on March 2, 2024.

Stolarz received no offensive support in a 1-0 loss in the opener at Montreal Oct. 9, but he bounced back with a pair of victories against the Pittsburgh Penguins and Los Angeles Kings at home.

Rangers at Maple Leafs picks and predictions

Prediction

Rangers 4, Maple Leafs 3

Moneyline

The RANGERS (+110) are worth a look in this Original 6 battle in T-Dot.

New York has been on fire offensively, and it really comes down to goaltending. The Rangers have a world-class tendy in Shesterkin, while the Leafs are doing it with mirrors. Stolarz has been decent for the Leafs, but he isn’t, and has never been, a 1A tendy in the NHL.

While the Maple Leafs (-130) have won 4 of the past 5 in this series, the teams split the 2 battles in Toronto.

Puck line/Against the spread

The Rangers +1.5 (-225) will cost you 2 1/4 times your potential return, and that’s way too much risk for just a little bit of insurance.

Yes, 5 of the past 9 meetings have been decided by a single goal, you can’t risk this much.

PASS, and just play New York straight up if you like it.

Over/Under

OVER 6 (-120) is worth a play, although go lightly. Play a half-unit wager at the most.

The Over cashed in all 3 regular-season meetings last season, and the Over has a 2-1-1 edge in 4 games for the Rangers. New York should be able to get to Stolarz, and Toronto should be able to slip a few pasts Shesty, too.

Rangers at Maple Leafs projected goalies

Igor Shesterkin (21-8-6, 2.44 GAA, .918 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Ilya Samsonov (15-4-2, 2.21 GAA, .920 SV%, 2 SO)

Shesterkin has faced the Maple Leafs once this season, allowing 1 goal on 23 shots in a 3-1 win at home on Dec. 15. The 2022 Vezina Trophy winner is 4-1-0 and has allowed 10 goals on 162 shots, good for a 1.99 GAA and .938 SV% in 5 career starts vs. Toronto.

Samsonov faced the Rangers twice last season as a member of the Washington Capitals, going 0-2-0 while allowing 7 goals on 54 shots, good for a 3.61 GAA and .870 SV%. The Maple Leafs netminder is 13-0-1 at home this season and is the 4th goaltender in the past 40 years with a 14-game home point streak to start a season.

Rangers at Maple Leafs picks and predictions

Prediction

Maple Leafs 2, Rangers 1

Moneyline

BET MAPLE LEAFS (-160).

Toronto has won 5 straight at Scotiabank Arena and Samsonov is riding a 14-game home point streak. While the Maple Leafs have struggled vs. the Rangers in past meetings, Toronto’s recent play at home is a good sign that it’s capable of pulling out the win Wednesday. Back Samsonov to keep the point streak alive at Scotiabank Arena.

Puck line/Against the spread

PASS.

Wednesday’s meeting should be a close game, but New York +1.5 (-190) is a little overpriced. Bet the moneyline or total instead.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 5.5 (+105).

The Under is 4-1 in the Rangers’ last 5 games and 4-0 in the Maple Leafs’ last 4 games following a win in their previous contest. Samsonov and Shesterkin are 6th and 9th, respectively, in SV% this season amongst goaltenders who have made at least 20 starts and should help the Under hit in a low-scoring matchup Wednesday.

Analyzing Thursday’s New York Rangers at Toronto Maple Leafs odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Rangers pushed past the Montreal Canadiens Tuesday by a 3-2 count at Madison Square Garden. The Blueshirts have won four in a row, hitting the Over in three of those outings, and five of the past six.

Rangers at Maple Leafs projected goalies

Igor Shesterkin (8-2-2, 2.42 GAA, .930 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Jack Campbell (9-3-1, 1.68 GAA, .943 SV%, 3 SO)

Shesterkin has won three consecutive starts, allowing 3 or fewer goals in six of his past seven outings. He is 3-1-1 with a 3.45 GAA and .908 SV% in five November starts, with the Rangers providing 4.0 goals of support in his past three outings.

Campbell turned side 21 of the 23 shots in a 2-1 overtime loss at home to the Rangers and Shesterkin back on Oct. 18. “Soup” is coming off a 24-save shutout against the Predators Tuesday.

Rangers at Maple Leafs odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Maple Leafs 3, Rangers 2

Money line

The MAPLE LEAFS (-180) are a little on the expensive side, but they’re the play against the Rangers in this revenge game. Toronto has been on fire lately, winning nine of the past 10 games, and it has won five of the past six games at home.

Against the spread

NEW YORK +1.5 (-180) is not terribly overpriced if you want a little bit of insurance. The Rangers won the first meeting in an overtime game, and two of the past three wins for the Leafs have been by one goal. New York isn’t a bad play on the puck line as an underdog if you want the insurance.

Over/Under

The UNDER 5.5 (-105) is the lean, although play it lightly. Shesterkin and Campbell haven’t allowed much this season, so the offenses will be challenged. When these two met in mid-October, we saw a total of 3 goals. Look for another Under here.

The Rangers picked up their first win of the season Saturday at the Montreal Canadiens, 3-1. New York is still struggling offensively, posting just 2.0 goals per game through three outings. The Under is 2-0-1 so far this season.

Rangers at Maple Leafs projected goalies

Igor Shesterkin (1-0-1, 1.98 GAA, .931 SV%) vs. Jack Campbell (2-0-0, 0.86 GAA, .968 SV%)

Shesterkin stopped 31 of the 32 shots he faced in Montreal Saturday to earn the first win of the season for the club. He has let in just four goals on 58 shots so far.

Campbell has been lights out and he’ll have to do some heavy lifting early on with Petr Mrazek out for two weeks due to a groin injury. Michael Hutchinson will serve as the backup.

Rangers at Maple Leafs odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Rangers 3, Maple Leafs 2

Money line

The RANGERS (+155) are a value play in this battle of Original Six teams as they try to make it two straight wins.

New York was probably sad the US-Canada border was closed last season, as that meant no games in Toronto. The Blueshirts are 6-2 in their last eight trips to Hogtown, and 4-1 in the previous five meetings with the Leafs overall.

Against the spread

The RANGERS +1.5 (-165) aren’t terribly expensive if you want a little bit of insurance and don’t trust the road team straight up.

Over/Under

UNDER 6.5 (-125) is the best play available in this game as both teams have had some trouble lighting the lamp during the early going. New York has just the 6 total goals while allowing 9 markers. Toronto has lit the lamp just 7 times while yielding 5 goals. Expect another defensive slog here.
