Grading Rams’ alternate uniform: LA (finally) nails new look

There’s very little to dislike about the Rams’ fantastic alternate uniform.

A year after releasing uniforms that were widely disliked by the fanbase, the Los Angeles Rams made up for it a little bit by revealing their new alternate jersey. It’s a classic white jersey with blue horns and yellow sleeves, going back to the popular look from the ’80s and ’90s.

The initial response from fans was undoubtedly better than the reception after last year’s reveal, and it should be. These uniforms are fantastic and there’s almost nothing to dislike about them.

Let’s get into the good, the bad and the grade.

Rams will wear alternate uniform three times, including in Week 1 vs. Bears

The Rams will open the season wearing their alternate uniform at home against the Bears on Sunday Night Football.

When the Los Angeles Rams open the season against the Chicago Bears at home on Sunday Night Football, they’ll be wearing their alternate uniform – a modern take on their classic white throwbacks.

After revealing their new uniform set on Tuesday, the Rams announced that they will wear the white alternates three times in 2021, including in Week 1.

Below is the “modern throwback” schedule for the new uniforms.

Week 1 vs. Bears: Sept. 12 on Sunday Night Football

Week 9 vs. Titans: Nov. 7 on Sunday Night Football

Week 10 vs. 49ers: Nov. 15 on Monday Night Football

Although it’s unfortunate that the Rams will only wear these spectacular three times this season, at least they’ll rock them in prime time for three of the biggest games of the year.

That Week 10 game will feature an especially great uniform combination, with the 49ers also wearing a throwback uniform. They revealed red 1994 throwbacks in June and will wear them for that game against the Rams.

Look: This is the best Rams uniform redesign concept yet

The Rams should go with a look that’s similar to this fan concept art.

The Los Angeles Rams will sport a new look in 2020 when they take the field at SoFi Stadium, but fans don’t yet know what colors or uniforms the team will be wearing next season. What we do know is that the brand refresh will come with new jerseys, helmets, colors and a new logo, which has fans both excited and nervous.

The Rams have long been at work on the redesign effort with Nike and the finished product will be revealed sometime this spring or summer. But if the team needs some inspiration on what fans want, this concept redesign is a good place to look.

Graphic designer Chris Ramirez put together an in-depth concept package and it’s the best one yet.

It uses the primary colors of navy, yellow/gold and white, with the team rocking gold jerseys at home and white on the road. Ramirez notes that no other team in the NFL wears a gold jersey, which will allow the Rams to stand out.

Yes, this is similar to the Rams’ Color Rush uniform, but wearing it with white pants offers a new look that fans would most likely welcome.

On the road, the Rams would wear all white, but they can mix-and-match the white jerseys with yellow or blue pants. This would be a clean look away from home, with pops of color on the shoulders and in the helmet.

As for an alternate uniform, that would be navy and yellow. This pays homage to the 1938 Cleveland Rams, who wore navy and yellow for one season before switching to royal blue. It would be similar to the Rams’ current primary uniforms – which are throwbacks, of course – but with a shade of blue that matches the helmet.

One minor aspect of this concept to note is the facemask. The Rams currently wear navy facemasks, which don’t stand out at all and blend into the helmets. White facemasks would be a subtle change, but one that might make the helmets pop a little bit more.

Some fans might feel it’s too similar to the Rams’ current look, but there’s very little wrong with the uniforms they wear now. The biggest issue is the mismatched blues on the jersey and helmet, and the gold trim on the road white uniforms.

This concept fixes those problems, while still honoring the history of the franchise.

The majority of fans on Reddit like the way this concept looks, too, which shows the Rams would be better off with a simpler, more subtle redesign rather than a complete overhaul the way the Buccaneers and Jets changed their uniforms.

Rams COO confirms new uniforms, helmets, colors and logo are coming in 2020

In addition to new uniforms, the Rams will also have a redesigned helmet, logo and different colors in 2020.

The Los Angeles Rams aren’t just moving to a new stadium in 2020. They’re also getting a facelift as part of an overall identity rebranding for the franchise.

Next season, the Rams will hit the field with a new look. This includes updated colors, uniforms, as well as a new helmet and logo. The details of the changes haven’t yet been revealed, but they are confirmed to be coming.

Team COO Kevin Demoff sent a letter to fans on Thursday confirming all of those changes will be made next season. Here’s part of the letter, which can also be read in full on the team’s website.

In addition, this exciting time includes our new brand identity – from logos and colors to uniforms and helmets. These elements will tie to our deep roots in Los Angeles while also providing a sleek, modern look that fits with our new, world-class home. We are excited to share all of this with you over the coming months and see our players run out of the SoFi Stadium tunnel for the first time in our new uniforms as we kick off this next era of Los Angeles Rams football.

The Rams have frequently mentioned the desire to honor the franchise’s history, while also modernizing their look for the 21st century. Whether that means their new uniforms will be a tweak to the beloved throwbacks or an homage to the past with a white-and-blue look is yet to be determined, but we should find out soon enough.

The most interesting part of Demoff’s letter was the fact that the Rams are getting new helmets. The horn design on their helmets is one of the most iconic in the NFL, and it’s hard to imagine that changing much. But, if the the team goes with a new logo, would they consider putting that on the helmets instead?
