Troy Reeder sees glimpses of a Super Bowl champion in the 2022 Chargers

LB Troy Reeder knows the Chargers are built to contend in 2022.

Los Angeles is built to contend in 2022, and one of their new acquisitions said Tuesday that the team reminds him of the championship-caliber one that shares a stadium with the Chargers.

Linebacker Troy Reeder, a free agent signee from the 2021 Super Bowl-winning Rams squad, told the media:

“I was blessed to be around a group that did do it the right way every day [last season]. I see so many similarities in that here. I think this team has what it takes. We just have to put it all together.”

It’s a glowing review from one of the few players with championship experience on the current Chargers roster. Only Reeder, linebacker Kyle Van Noy, and cornerback JC Jackson have a Super Bowl ring to their names (Van Noy has 2). All three are, of course, new to the Chargers this season, the end result of Brandon Staley’s emphasis on finding players who have summited the mountaintop before:

“Those guys know about the journey to get there, what it takes on a day-to-day basis, and that mindset that you need to have every single day.”

Of course, every team thinks they’re capable of winning a championship in August before any preseason games have even been played. For the Chargers, it may even seem premature to outside onlookers that players and fans are talking about a Super Bowl run.

After all, neither Staley nor quarterback Justin Herbert has even been to the playoffs, while the other teams in a highly competitive AFC have reloaded. Making the big stage in Glendale will require surviving a quarterback gauntlet of at least Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Joe Burrow, with Lamar Jackson and Russell Wilson having solid cases.

The 2021 Rams knew this all too well. After beating Kyler Murray and the Cardinals as the four seed on the opening weekend of the playoffs, Los Angeles had to hang on versus Tom Brady’s supercharged Buccaneers squad while narrowly avoiding a duel with Aaron Rodgers. Toppling the 49ers in the NFC championship was no easy feat, even if Jimmy Garoppolo isn’t the same caliber of signal caller.

So what makes the Bolts more likely than other teams to make that leap?

According to Reeder, it comes down to leadership across all three phases. On offense, Herbert leads the charge as a quarterback who can “put up any number of points in any given game.” Defensively, Derwin James, Joey Bosa, and Khalil Mack lead a unit that “can potentially shut out any team.” On special teams, long snapper Josh Harris is an All-Pro caliber player with ten years of NFL experience.

“The pieces are there,” said Reeder. But whether or not the Chargers are in a position to hoist the Lombardi in February will come down to “doing it week in and week out…staying healthy and peaking at the right time.”

Rams have 5th-best chance to reach Super Bowl, according to ESPN FPI

At 4-1, the Rams have an 88.1% chance to make the playoffs and 17.2% chance to reach the Super Bowl.

The Rams began the year with better Super Bowl odds than only 10 teams. Analysts were bearish on Los Angeles’ chances of winning it all this season, stemming from the team’s offseason moves and struggles in 2019.

But after five weeks, the Rams are sitting at 4-1 and right in the thick of the race for the top seed in the NFC. Obviously, it’s still early in the year, but the Rams look every bit like a Super Bowl contender.

The analytics are on their side, too.

According to ESPN FPI (Football Power Index), the Rams have the fifth-best chance to reach the Super Bowl, behind only the Chiefs, Ravens, Seahawks and Packers. Their odds sit at 17.2%, with a 7.9% chance to win it all.

What hurts the Rams is the competitiveness in the NFC West. It’s the best division in football, which has the Rams’ postseason chances (88.1%) slightly lower than the other elite teams on ESPN’s list.

It also doesn’t help that the Rams haven’t beaten any teams outside the NFC East, though they did almost pull off a remarkable comeback against the Bills in Week 3. They’ll be tested in the coming weeks against the 49ers, Bears and Dolphins, and after their Week 9 bye, the schedule gets especially tough.

With an extra playoff berth available this year, the Rams do have a good chance to make the postseason, and if they get into the dance, they’ll be as feared as just about any team in the playoffs.

Rams were most popular Super Bowl bet in the last week

No team received more wagers to win the Super Bowl than the Rams.

Momentum isn’t something the Los Angeles Rams have had much of since last season, trending in the wrong direction for most of the last year after making the Super Bowl two seasons ago. They regressed in 2019 and endured a number of key losses this offseason, leading to their Super Bowl odds plummeting compared to last summer.

That hasn’t stopped bettors from putting some money down on the Rams, though. There’s been a large uptick in wagers on Los Angeles lately, making them the most popular Super Bowl bet in the last week.

That comes from Oddschecker, which collects data from the largest sportsbooks, including BetMGM, FanDuel and DraftKings. According to their numbers, 32% of all bets placed on the Super Bowl LV winner in the last week have been on the Rams, which is the most of any team in the league.

At BetMGM, the Rams are currently 30/1 to win the Super Bowl next season, which is tied for 14th in the NFL. They’re right there with the Bills and Titans, and slightly behind the Vikings and Colts.

After the Rams in wager popularity is New England, which has received 26% of the bets to win the Super Bowl in the last week. The Eagles are third at 11%.

Rams given same odds to win Super Bowl LV as Bears and Falcons

The Rams opened with the 10th-best odds to win the Super Bowl next year.

The 2019 season officially wrapped up on Sunday night with the Kansas City Chiefs beating the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 in Super Bowl LIV. It’s the second year in a row an NFC West team has lost in the Super Bowl, following the Rams’ loss to the Patriots last year.

Everyone is looking toward the 2020 season now, which includes Super Bowl LV odds. It’s never too early to think about which teams have the best chance to win it all next year, but the Rams aren’t among them.

According to Bovada, the Rams have the 10th-best odds (+2500) to raise the Lombardi Trophy next season, tied with the Bears, Falcons and Seahawks. Surprisingly, they have worse odds than their future roommates, the Los Angeles Chargers, who don’t know who their quarterback will be.

The Chiefs, Ravens and 49ers are predictably at the top of the heap, considering they were the best teams in 2019. The Saints and Patriots round out the top five. The Redskins have the worst odds at +15000.

The Rams are as talented as any team in the NFL, beginning with Aaron Donald, Jalen Ramsey, Todd Gurley and Jared Goff. They also have major questions to answer this offseason with Cory Littleton, Michael Brockers and Dante Fowler Jr. all being free agents. Andrew Whitworth will also be a free agent.

If they can get the offensive line fixed and play consistently on defense, the Rams should be back in the playoffs. But in a division that features the 49ers, Seahawks and Cardinals, nothing is given.
