5 crazy stats from Cam Akers’ breakout performance vs. Patriots

Cam Akers put together one of the best performances by a Rams rookie running back.

Cam Akers was the Rams’ top draft pick this year, being selected 52nd overall in the second round. He wasn’t being treated as such, however, seeing limited playing time for much of the season.

The Rams gave him 21 carries in Week 13, and then built on that workload with another 29 carries Thursday night against the Patriots. He erupted for 171 yards rushing and 23 yards receiving, putting together an incredible performance in prime time.

His showing against the Patriots had some historical significance, too, ranking as one of the best games ever by a Rams rookie running back.

Here are five awesome stats to know from his breakout night.

5 takeaways from Rams’ Week 14 win over Patriots

Everything we learned from the Rams’ 24-3 win over the Patriots on Thursday night.

Sean McVay often talks about cutting the season into quarters and encouraging his players to take it one game at a time in each four-week stretch. Well, after going 8-4 in the first three quarters, the Rams got off to a perfect start in the fourth quarter of the regular season, crushing the Patriots 24-3 on Thursday night.

It was as big a statement as the Rams have made all year, bowling over the team that shut them down in Super Bowl LIII. At 9-4, the Rams are in the mix for a top-two seed in the NFC and are one inch closer to securing a playoff berth.

Here are five things we learned from their Week 14 win over the Patriots at SoFi Stadium.

Studs and duds from Rams’ big win over Patriots on Thursday night

Cam Akers was the star of the show in Inglewood on Thursday night against the Patriots.

The Patriots blew out the Chargers in Week 13, 45-0, but they were on the opposite end of a lopsided victory Thursday night against the Rams at SoFi Stadium. Los Angeles took care of business, throttling the Patriots with a 24-3 victory to earn its ninth win of the season.

The Rams had almost no trouble on either side of the ball, rushing consistently on the ground with Cam Akers and penetrating the Patriots’ offensive line play after play with Aaron Donald, Michael Brockers and Morgan Fox.

Here are our studs and duds from Week 14, led by a star rookie on offense.

Rams steamroll Patriots, 24-3: Everything we know from Week 14 win

The Rams had no trouble beating the Patriots on Thursday night, crushing them at SoFi Stadium in Week 14.

There’s really no way for the Rams to ever get revenge on the Patriots for beating them twice in the Super Bowl. However, they were at least able to snap a six-game losing streak to New England on Thursday night – and in blowout fashion.

Los Angeles steamrolled the Patriots at SoFi Stadium, winning 24-3. It’s the Rams’ ninth win of the season, moving them one step closer to securing a playoff berth and possibly winning the NFC West.

The Patriots aren’t nearly as talented as the teams they’ve had in recent years, but they came into this one after winning four of their last five games to get back to 6-6.

Here’s everything we know from the Week 14 win in Inglewood, highlighted by great performances by the defense and rookie running back Cam Akers.

Rams inactives: Gay active, MacGinnis out vs. Patriots

Terrell Lewis is inactive with a knee injury.

The Los Angeles Rams are hosting the New England Patriots at SoFi Stadium tonight in an important Week 14 matchup for both teams. The Rams were given an injury scare on Wednesday when Matt Gay was limited in practice due to a shoulder injury, which caused him to be listed as questionable.

He’s active against the Patriots, however, and will be the Rams’ kicker. Austin MacGinnis is inactive and will not play.

The Rams elevated MacGinnis from the practice squad before kickoff on Thursday as a contingency plan, just in case Gay was unable to play.

Terrell Lewis is also inactive despite not having an injury designation coming into the game.

Cam Akers and Michael Brockers are both active as expected despite starting the week of practice limited by shoulder and neck injuries, respectively.

Look: Rams debut yellow end zones at SoFi Stadium for Week 14

This is the latest field design for the Rams at SoFi Stadium, debuting yellow end zones against the Patriots.

The Rams have experimented with several different field designs at SoFi Stadium this season by switching up the logo arrangement and painting the end zones. Up to this point, the end zones had only been either painted blue or left unpainted to show the natural turf color, but on Thursday night, they’ll be brighter than ever.

The Rams shared a sneak peek at the field before tonight’s Rams-Patriots game and the end zones are painted yellow, which is a first. It’s a great look, much better than the unpainted end zones that the Rams have used previously.

The L.A. logo is also at midfield, with the ram head in the end zone.

As for the Rams’ uniform combination, they’ll be wearing royal jerseys with bone pants – a combo they’ve only worn once before. There was some hope on Twitter that the team would debut a bone-and-sol uniform set tonight, but that doesn’t seem to be the case despite the yellow end zones.

Kickoff from SoFi Stadium is set for 8:20 p.m. ET in Inglewood.

5 key matchups to watch in Rams-Patriots on Thursday night

Can the Rams exact revenge on the Patriots after losing six straight to them, including two Super Bowls?

The Rams will truly never avenge their two Super Bowl losses to the New England Patriots, with the most recent one coming just two seasons ago. However, they’ll at least try to beat them for the first time since 2001 on Thursday night when they square off at SoFi Stadium.

In order to do that, they’ll need to win some key individual matchups, many of which favor the Rams. This Patriots team isn’t as talented as those from years past, but they’re still led by Bill Belichick and have a former NFL MVP at quarterback in Cam Newton.

Here are five key matchups to watch in Week 14.

Updated odds for Rams vs. Patriots: L.A. only a 4.5-point favorite now

The spread has moved in the Patriots’ direction after opening at Rams -6.

The Rams predictably opened the week as the favorites over the Patriots, despite New England winning four of its last five and blowing out the Chargers 45-0 on Sunday. However, as the week has gone on, the betting line has shifted in New England’s direction.

After opening as 6-point favorites over the Patriots, the Rams are now favored by only 4.5 points, according to BetMGM. L.A. hasn’t had any notable injuries, so the line shift is likely due to the majority of bets coming in on the Patriots to cover, thus lowering the spread so that the sportsbook gets more money on the Rams.

The over/under hasn’t changed, still sitting at 44.5 points. That’s tied for the third-lowest of Week 14, suggesting this game will be a defensive battle. The Rams have gone 7-5 against the spread this season, covering in more than half of their games. The Patriots have covered just six times in their 12 games this year.

The Rams and Patriots will kick off at 8:20 p.m. ET on Thursday night from SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.
