Rams embarrassed by Jets, lose 23-20 at home: Everything we know

The Rams were absolutely stunned by the Jets at home, losing 23-20 at SoFi Stadium.

Only one team was favored by more points this season the Los Angeles Rams were against the New York Jets on Sunday, coming in as 17-point favorites. And yet, the Rams not only failed to cover the spread, but they lost outright.

Los Angeles was embarrassed by the previously 0-13 Jets, losing 23-20 at home. The Rams still have a chance to win the NFC West with wins in their last two games, but this loss hurts mentally and in the playoff picture.

Here’s everything we know from the shocking Week 15 loss by L.A.

Jared Goff makes Rams history with 4th straight 20-TD season

Jared Goff is the first Rams QB to ever accomplish this feat.

Jared Goff catches a lot of flak for the way he plays sometimes, but he’s still been a good quarterback since being drafted first overall by the Rams in 2016. Despite his struggles, he’s still managed to climb the ranks in terms of franchise history at the quarterback position.

On Sunday against the Jets, Goff tossed his 20th touchdown pass of the season. In doing so, he made franchise history as the first Rams quarterback to ever have four consecutive seasons of 20-plus touchdown passes.

The Rams have had some prolific passers under center, and also some extremely difficult years at the position, but Goff has stabilized the quarterback spot for L.A.

The fact was uncovered by Rams play-by-play announcer J.B. Long.

Here’s a look at the touchdown pass that got it done, connecting with Tyler Higbee for six points to make it a 23-16 deficit to New York.

Watch: Rams finally score TD vs. Jets as Goff hits Woods for six

It took almost 39 minutes, but the Rams finally found the end zone against the Jets.

It took a lot longer than anyone expected, but the Rams finally got into the end zone against the Jets. With six minutes left in the third quarter, Jared Goff hit Robert Woods from 15 yards out, drawing the Rams a bit closer by making the score 20-10.

It was a great grab by Woods, who went down and got the low throw and snuck his hands under the ball. It was Woods first touchdown reception at SoFi Stadium, which is also something that took much longer than he probably thought it would.

If the Rams come back to beat the Jets, they will clinch a playoff berth. If they lose, they’ll drop to second in the NFC West, trailing the Seahawks.

Rams nearly held scoreless in 1st half for first time in 4 years, trail Jets 13-3

The first half went as poorly as it could have for the Rams.

As 17-point favorites, the Los Angeles Rams were fully expected to blow out the New York Jets in Week 15. But the first half went about as poorly as the Rams could’ve hoped, getting absolutely dominated by the 0-13 Jets.

New York jumped out to a 7-0 lead before adding two field goals off of a blocked punt and Jared Goff interception, going up 13-0 in the second quarter. The Jets are known for starting fast – they’ve now scored on eight straight opening possessions – but this game wasn’t expected to go the way it has.

The Rams went into the half trailing 13-3 thanks to a 44-yard field goal by Matt Gay before the break. It nearly marked the first time L.A. has been held scoreless at halftime since Week 14 of the 2016 season.

Nothing was working for the Rams in this one. Jared Goff was getting very little time in the pocket, the ground game was getting stonewalled and special teams was a mess, outside of Gay’s made field goal.

The Rams mustered only 97 total yards compared to 104 for the Jets, and went 0-7 on third down.

The Rams have been a second-half team all year, but they need a huge effort in the final 30 minutes to avoid what would be the biggest upset of the NFL season.

After getting four extra days of rest following their Week 14 win over the New England Patriots, the Los Angeles Rams will be back in action on Sunday against another AFC East team, the winless New York Jets.

With a win, the Rams will lock up a playoff berth for the third time in four years, and move one step closer to securing the NFC West title. As 17-point favorites, they’re fully expected to take care of the Jets and drop New York’s record to an NFL-worst 0-14.

Why New York Jets Will Win

The offense might have died against Miami and Seattle – the team’s heart was ripped out after the loss to the Raiders – but the run defense continues to be fine. It hasn’t allowed more than 100 yards in three of the last six games, and this week it should provide more of a fight than New England did against Cam Akers.

How focused will the Rams be? This is one of those teams that has occasional lapses in production – the San Francisco loss, the rough day against the Giants – and it has a MASSIVE game against Seattle next week.

Why Los Angeles Rams Will Win

The Jet offense just doesn’t do enough. The passing game is the worst in the NFL, there’s absolutely no running game, and any decent lead all but ends this.

The Ram offense is fun, but the defense is the real star. It leads the NFL in pass defense, fewest yards allowed per attempt, and touchdown throws. Unless the Jets run for 150 yards, forget it.

The Rams haven’t allowed more than 136 yards in any game.

Fantasy Football Player To Watch

RB Cam Akers, Los Angeles
The 171 yards against New England actually seemed a little light considering there wasn’t any hope of slowing him down early on. He was huge for fantasy owners who gave him a run last Thursday night, but he didn’t score after getting into the end zone each of the previous two games. The Jets have an okay enough run D to make Akers a wee bit of a call if you have other options.

What’s Going To Happen

The Rams aren’t going to come up with a total wipeout like Seattle did against the Jets last week, but they’ll be just balanced enough and sharp enough to not have to press too hard. Jared Goff and the passing game will go off.

Rams injury report: Okoronkwo, Hollins questionable vs. Jets

Three players are questionable for the Rams, but Sean McVay expects all of them to play against the Jets.

A COVID-19 scare on Thursday caused the Rams to take extra precautions leading up to this weekend’s game against the New York Jets, keeping five players out of the final two practices of the week.

Bobby Evans and Nick Scott were placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday and have been ruled out for Sunday’s game, while Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, Justin Hollins and Brian Allen remained away from the team to close out the week.

Okoronkwo, Hollins and Allen are all listed as questionable after missing practice Friday, though Sean McVay expects them to play as long as they test negative and remain asymptomatic.

On the Jets’ side, Jamison Crowder is the only player with an injury designation. He’s questionable with a calf injury. If he’s unable to play, it’ll be a big blow to the Jets offense, given his impact at wide receiver.

Kickoff on Sunday is set for 1:05 p.m. PT at SoFi Stadium.

What the Jets are saying about Aaron Donald ahead of Sunday’s game

The Jets are well aware of Aaron Donald’s dominance, but Sam Darnold says it’ll be fun to face the All-Pro pass rusher.

When opponents talk about the Rams defense, it almost always starts with the big man in the middle: Aaron Donald. The two-time Defensive Player of the Year is once again having an outstanding season, leading the league with 12.5 sacks, which matches his 2019 total.

He’ll try to increase that number on Sunday against the Jets, who rank last in scoring and yards offensively. Leading up to this Week 15 matchup, Jets players and coaches discussed Donald’s game and what makes him so good.

They all recognized his rare talent, and Sam Darnold says it’ll be fun to face the menacing defensive tackle.

Rams vs. Jets: 4 key matchups to watch on Sunday

Troy Hill has to lock down Jamison Crowder on Sunday afternoon at SoFi Stadium.

The Los Angeles Rams should feel great about their chances to knock off the New York Jets on Sunday afternoon, coming into this game as 17-point favorites. The team won’t take the Jets lightly, though, even despite their 0-13 record.

The Rams have the advantage at just about every position, but New York still has some talented players on both sides of the ball. Here are four key matchups to watch as the Rams get set to square off against the Jets in Week 15.

Check the broadcast map to find out if you’ll get Rams-Jets on FOX in Week 15.

The Los Angeles Rams are fresh off a Thursday night win over the New England Patriots, getting an extra few days of rest ahead of Week 15. They’ll take on the New York Jets this weekend at SoFi Stadium, looking to make it three wins in a row.

With a win, the Rams will lock up a playoff berth and move one step closer to securing the NFC West title. As 17-point favorites, they’re fully expected to beat the Jets and improve their record to 10-4 with two games remaining.

Given the lopsided matchup, it’s no surprise that the game isn’t broadcast to a very wide audience. Few people want to watch the Jets play, which FOX fully understands. Check the broadcast map from 506 Sports below to find out if you’ll get Rams-Jets on TV in your area. If you’re in the yellow, you’re in luck.

It’ll be Kevin Kugler and Brock Huard on the call for Sunday’s game, which will kick off at 4:05 p.m. ET.

The Rams are 10-4 all-time against the Jets and will try to make it two straight victories over New York, with their last coming in 2016.
