WATCH: Coach Prime meets Ralphie face-to-face for first time

Coach Prime conquered one of his biggest fears

Deion Sanders has done a lot since taking the head job for the Colorado Buffaloes football team in December. But on Monday, he conquered a fear of his by meeting with one of the greatest live mascots in college football, Ralphie.

Coach Sanders has been looking forward to — and dreading — the meeting with Ralphie for a while now. In December, the Well Off Media YouTube page posted a video of Sanders talking about how he was scared of Ralphie. To quell his fear, Sanders suggested a meeting with the beloved buffalo to get everyone on the same page before the fall season kicks off.

On Monday, the anticipated meeting finally took place. Coach Prime was able to get an up-close view of the majestic creature and treat her to a pre-practice snack. After that, both Deion Sanders Jr. and Coach Sanders sat in Ralphie’s trailer and watched her complete a run.

WATCH: Ralphie VI’s first run of her sophomore season

Ralphie VI’s sophomore debut was a success

Ralphie VI’s offseason work in the weight room was obvious when she made her 2022 debut on Friday night. The second-year bison’s run was delayed by a 30-minute weather delay but other than that, everything went as planned.

Her Folsom Field loop was also enjoyed by one of the most-packed student sections I’ve seen in recent years.

Ralphie’s run was followed by a promising opening drive by starting quarterback Brendon Lewis, although it ended on an unsuccessful fourth-down gamble. Midway through the second quarter, TCU holds a 7-6 lead over Colorado. The Horned Frogs’ touchdown came on a 60-yard punt return early in the second quarter.

Check out Ralphie’s first run of the season below, courtesy of CU Sports Report’s Nikki Edwards:

Fans have chosen the nickname for Ralphie VI

For the past month, Colorado Buffaloes fans have been voting on the nickname for Ralphie VI. The fans have now spoken: “Ember” will be her new nickname. The vote was also able to generate nearly $25,000 for the Ralphie program.

Ember won easily, garnering 43.8% of the vote. Blitz was second at 29.5%, with Sixer (9.1%) and Tini (7.7%) rounding out the top four. All of the previous Ralphie’s have had their own nicknames ranging from Tequila (Ralphie III) to Blackout (Ralphie V) and all the way back to Rralph (Ralphie 1).

According to CUBuffs.com, Ember’s nickname came from extraordinary circumstances:

The nickname Ember came from, after being abandoned by her mother, Ralphie VI was bottle-fed and raised by a beef cow before being identified as a possible candidate for CU’s next mascot.  When a wildfire threatened the ranch where she was staying, Ralphie Handlers jumped to action and brought her to Colorado to begin her training. Her fiery personality and love for the crowd gives her undeniable flare.
