The Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli returned to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park for the first time in a decade and put on an exciting race in front of legions of Canadian race fans. Paul Menard led the TA class for a majority of the race, but it seemed that Chris Dyson would take the checkered flag following a late race overtake. However, a spin by Dyson with two laps to go handed the race back to Menard, who earned his fifth victory of the season.

In the CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series race, Rafa Matos led the field from flag to flag, holding off an ultra-fast Thomas Merrill and skillfully navigating through traffic in the multi-class affair, claiming his fifth win of the year and bringing him closer to his third TA2 championship.

Menard secured the pole position for the race in Saturday’s qualifying session with a blazing-fast lap, and when the green flag waved, he showed the same speed in his No. 31 Menards/Masterforce Tools Ford Mustang. However, Dyson was never far behind him in his No. 16 GYM WEED Ford Mustang. Lap after lap, the distance between the two drivers was never more than a second and a half, and as the two contenders battled through traffic, the gap dwindled at times to just inches.

On lap 34, Dyson was finally able to use the traffic to his advantage, taking the lead from Menard and opening up a gap in clean air. It appeared that Dyson would drive away with the victory, but with two laps to go, Dyson’s rear end kicked out on him, and he did a full spin. Although his car righted itself and Dyson was able to continue, he was slowed just enough for Menard to retake the lead. Dyson had the speed to catch Menard, but not enough time. Menard crossed the finish line first, followed by Dyson. Tomy Drissi in the No. 8 Drissi Motorsports/Lucas/Mission Chevrolet Camaro claimed the third podium spot.

“We had a fast car all weekend,” said Menard on the podium. “This track is all out. It takes a lot of commitment. Our guys worked really hard getting the car comfortable going through Turn 2 and Turn 4. Chris [Dyson] and I, we’re just so close on speed. Last week, this week, it’s like whoever’s in front has the advantage. These cars make a lot of downforce, so clean air is a big advantage. And we just got to run. I boogered up 5B, and he got a run all the way down the back straight. I didn’t want to challenge him too hard in Turn 8. I stuck to his bumper, he made a little mistake, and I was able to capitalize.”

The CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series field kicked off the race with the top three cars on the grid in the same order in which they sat in the points, with Matos first in his No. 60 Concord American Flagpole/Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang, Merrill second in his No. 26 HP Tuners/Cope Race Cars Ford Mustang, and Ben Maier third in his No. 80 BOE Marine/Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang. With valuable championship points on the line, every lap and every position counted for the trio. Matos got a clean start and led Merrill and Maier until a full-course caution was deployed on lap two. When racing resumed on lap 10, Matos and Merrill continued to lead the field, but Maier got shuffled back, dropping to sixth in the running order. This allowed Tyler Gonzalez in the No. 40 Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang to take over third, and he was followed by Thomas Annunziata in the No. 90 Bayshore Mortgage/Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang and Josh Hurley in the No. 20 Greenlight Simulation/BCR Ford Mustang.

With conditions remaining green for the remainder of the race, competitors fought both each other and the racetrack, which offered limited passing opportunities, all while dealing with traffic from other classes. As the laps ticked away, Merrill remained tight on Matos’ rear, but never had quite enough to challenge for the lead. When the checkered flag waved, Matos took the victory, followed by Merrill and Gonzalez in the final podium position. Annunziata and Hurley rounded out the top five.

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=1479]

“I think today was about managing traffic,” said Matos in GYM WEED Winners Circle. “The car was really good. I was able to build up that gap and manage my distance to Thomas [Merrill]. I think the track was really slick, maybe because of the rain this morning and the NASCAR cars that ran a little bit earlier and took off some of the rubber, but the car was fantastic, indeed. I want to thank Nitro Motorsports for prepping six very fast racecars. We got Tyler [Gonzalez] on the podium; he definitely had a really good pace all weekend long. Hats off to Concord American Flagpole for trusting and believing in this project. Thanks to Chris Dyson, a big supporter of ours. Just an amazing weekend overall. Twenty years ago, I was here at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. I had a pole position in the Star Mazda Series and finished second. Today, I changed my luck around and we won the race. This is a great moment for us and a huge step towards our third championship here.”

Kaylee Bryson in the No. 02 Logical Systems Inc./Sam Pierce Chevrolet Corvette led the SGT class to green and was untouchable for the 41-lap event. She held a considerable advantage over David Hampton (No. 14 AR Motorsports/Porsche Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport) and Milton Grant (No. 55 Sentry Self Storage/Springhill Suites Porsche 991.3 GT3 Cup), who was battling transmission issues. Without having to watch her mirrors for her SGT competitors, Bryson was able to mix it up with CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series cars, holding her own with the faster vehicles. As the race concluded, Bryson led Hampton and Grant over the finish line, claiming her second win of the 2024 season.

“This feels good; it was fun to bring the GT car out here and race with the CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series cars and TA cars,” said Bryson. “They’d really kill me on the straightaway, but I had something for them in the corners, which made it a little bit of fun. We were racing around quite a bit with the TA2 cars and passed a couple of them, which made it really exciting for us and our team. We want to come out here and race and put down really quick laps. I’m so thankful to have a car that makes it all 100 miles, and I’m really thankful for the whole crew for all the work they put in. It’s fun to be back on the top step.”

The highlight show of Saturday’s race will air on MAVTV on Thursday, September 5 at 8:00 p.m. ET.

The Trans Am Series will next hit the track at VIRginia International Raceway for the penultimate race of the season, October 3-6.

Trans Am points leaders Menard and Matos grab poles at CTMP

Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli points leader Paul Menard, in the No. 31 Menards/Masterforce Tools Ford Mustang, was fastest overall on Friday and claimed his fourth pole of the season with a time of 1m13.255s at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park — the series’ first visit to the facility in 10 years.

“Traffic has been the name of the game in practice and the three test sessions,” said Menard. “There’s a lot of speed disparity, so you try to work on your car in segments. You get a clean segment, kind of work on what the car needs, get another clean segment, work on what the car needs again. In qualifying, I just had that one lap that would put it all together. We adjusted the car a lot throughout the weekend. It wasn’t very comfortable early on. We got it better, but it still was missing a little something. We found it after practice. We had a little hiccup that we fixed, and the car is really good right now.”

TA2 points leader Rafa Matos in the No. 60 Concord American Flagpole/Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang was fastest of the CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series competitors with a best time of 1m18.327s, earning his third pole of the year.

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=1479]

“My last time here at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park was 20 years ago when I came and ran Star Mazda,” said Matos. “The track hasn’t changed much, so I had really good memories here. I had the pole position in that race, and I finished second, so hopefully my luck will change around tomorrow. We had speed all weekend long; we were just kind of chipping away and working with the setup, massaging the setup of the car, working with my teammates, making sure that every car is competitive. I knew I had the speed, I just had to put the lap together. I had a really good lap going in the last practice, but I just made a small mistake in the last corner and that cost me a couple tenths. I knew I had the speed and just needed to get it together, so I had everything in my head. I mentalized the lap and I was able to get it done.

“Big hats off to Nitro Motorsports, assembling the car and working with six cars this weekend. Thanks to Concord American Flag Pole for believing in this process, Chris Dyson, and every single person that has been involved with this program, directly and indirectly.”

The all-class race goes green Saturday at 2:15 p.m. ET. The race will be broadcast live on MAVTV and streamed live here. The highlights show of the race will air on MAVTV on Thursday, September 5 at 8:00 p.m. ET.

Matos grabs fourth TA2 win of the year at Road America

Rafa Matos drove to GYM WEED Winners Circle for the fourth time this season at Road America, earning his 24th-career victory as the CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series’ winningest driver in history. After starting second, Matos made an early pass for the lead and was a force to be reckoned with, maintaining the first position through multiple restarts and overcoming late-race mechanical issues to take the checkered flag and extend his lead in the point standings.

Jake Drew (No. 7 Silver Hare Racing Chevrolet Camaro) started the race from pole after setting a new track record in Friday’s qualifying session. On the initial start, Drew easily maintained the lead, but a full-course caution was deployed on lap two for a car stopped on the back straight. When green-flag racing resumed two laps later, second-place starter Matos (No. 60 Concord American Flagpole/Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang) challenged Drew and deftly passed him to the inside. Thomas Merrill, who restarted fourth in his No. 26 HP Tuners/Cope Race Cars Ford Mustang, quickly moved into third by passing Mike Skeen (No. 17 Team SLR-M1 Racecars Chevrolet Camaro), then made his way around Drew, costing the No. 7 another position and taking over second.

While Matos smoothly led, the running order behind him changed rapidly. Drew dropped back to sixth, and Merrill lost the runner-up position to Austin Green in the No. 89 3-Dimensional Services Group Ford Mustang, while seventh-place starter Connor Mosack (No. 57 Silver Hare Racing/PRG Chevrolet Camaro) moved up to fourth by the second double yellow of the day on lap eight.

The top five remained the same during the next green-flag run, but the field was grouped together by another caution on lap 14. When racing resumed on lap 17, Matos had another beautiful start, while Merrill reclaimed second after getting back around Green. Skeen got into trouble while racing with Drew, allowing Drew to slide back into the top five.

Suddenly, Matos began to struggle with a transmission issue, his car popping out of gear. One lap later, Merrill was right on Matos’ tail and looking to make the pass. Matos was forced to drive the rest of the race with one hand on the steering wheel and another on the shifter, allowing him to keep the car in gear, yet he was still able to hold off Merrill’s advances. Meanwhile, Drew had an excellent run in the final laps, picking off both Green and Mosack to find his way back into a podium spot.

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=1479]

When the checkered flag waved, Matos earned the victory, followed by Merrill, Drew and Mosack. Thomas Annunziata (No. 90 Bayshore Mortgage/Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang) amazingly worked his way all the way through the field after starting last due to a pre-race penalty, claiming the final position in the top five with a late-race pass on Green.

“It was a very special day for us; our fourth win of the season,” said Matos. “A great moment for us, a great moment for Nitro Motorsports. Hats off to every single member of the team. This is a group effort. They worked their [butts] off and prepared a fantastic car. Thank you to Concord American Flagpole and my biggest supporter, Chris Dyson. Thank you very much for believing in this program. I want to congratulate Tyler Kicera, also. A lot of times, Tyler is the mastermind behind the team. He’s a great man, great driver. It’s been a good day for us, and we’re just stretching that points gap even more. Hopefully we’ll come back after the summer break and wrap up the championship.”

The Pro/Am Challenge race was exciting, with four different drivers leading the class over the course of the race. Jared Odrick (No. 00 BLACK Underwear/Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang) started fourth in class and overcame a spin in Canada Corner to make a late-race pass for the lead, earning his first-career Trans Am victory with a 10th-place finish overall.

“I’m doing my best not to cry, you know,” said Odrick. “I have a lot of goals within racing, and I want to keep this going. I’m just so happy that I was able to run with Nitro Motorsports. Everybody there has just been awesome. It’s been amazing to be able to come over here and the welcome that I’ve received. Thank you to CB Motorsports, as well, for helping me get into this series in the first place, and to Mike Skeen and all of his initial convincing. He told me that if I want to become a better driver, then I’d better run TA2. I want to say thank you to my girlfriend, Crystal. Thank you to Black Underwear and to my crew chief, Cody. We had a tough first week at Pittsburgh, and we’ve just been fighting back ever since.”

Rafa Matos continued his domination in the CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series, earning his second-consecutive victory and third of the 2024 season. After taking the lead from polesitter Ben Maier by Turn 3 of the first lap, Matos executed flawlessly in his No. 60 Concord American Flagpole/Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang to win in TA2’s first visit to Pittsburgh International Race Complex.

Maier started Round 6 at Pitt Race with his No. 80 BOE Marine/Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang on the pole next to Jake Drew in the No. 7 Silver Hare Racing/PRG Chevrolet Camaro, but after the green flag waved, Matos jumped from third to take the leaders three wide into Turn 1. After a scramble for position, it was Matos who emerged with the lead, securing it before the field entered Turn 3. Other drivers also made huge leaps in the running order on the first lap, with fifth-place starter Adrian Wlostowski (No. 3 CMI/Spot-On Services Ford Mustang) sneaking into third, and ninth-place starter Thomas Merrill (No. 26 HP Tuners/Cope Race Cars Ford Mustang) quickly jumping up to fourth, while Drew slid back to fifth.

It wasn’t long before the top five changed again, with Wlostowski spinning on lap three and dropping to 17th. On lap 14, Drew and Merrill were battling for position and made contact, resulting in Merrill spinning into the grass and bringing out a full-course caution. The race restarted on lap 18 with Matos, Maier, Drew, Tyler Kicera (No. 40 Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang) and Josh Hurley (No. 20 Greenlight Simulation/BCR Ford Mustang) in the top five.

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=1479]

Matos had a perfect restart, and the race stayed green for the remainder of the event, leaving Maier to fruitlessly chase the two-time champion, who ticked off consistently fast times lap after lap and opened a significant gap over second. The racing wasn’t over though, as the drivers behind the top two were engaged in exciting battles. Carson Kvapil (No. 28 Team SLR-M1 Racecars Chevrolet Camaro), who started 10th, cracked the top five on lap 21, and moved into fourth on lap 26. Thomas Annunziata (No. 90 Bayshore Mortgage/Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang) started last after missing qualifying yesterday while racing at Sonoma Raceway, but worked his way into fifth on lap 31.

On the final lap, Kvapil squeezed by Drew to score the last podium spot. Matos, Maier and Kvapil were the first across the finish line when the checkered flag waved, followed by Drew and Annunziata. After the race, Drew was assessed a penalty for avoidable contact with Merrill, moving Annunziata up to fourth, and Pennsylvania-native Kicera into fifth.

“All the credit goes to the Nitro Motorsports team; these guys are amazing,” said Matos in GYM WEED Winners Circle. “They gave me a fantastic car. The Concord American Flagpole Mustang was hauling the mail today, it was amazing. I had a good initial start, and I was able to go around Ben [Maier], but he kept me honest all race long. I was pushing really hard to build that gap. I couldn’t believe how long those last 10 laps took, but we were able to manage the gap and win for the 23rd time. Hats off to every single person that has been helping us, as well as my family, my wife and daughter. I love you guys.”

Rafa Matos added to his record as the winningest driver in the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli’s CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series, earning his 22nd-career victory in the Trans Am Memorial Day Classic at the Lime Rock SpeedTour. The two-time champion led every lap from start to finish to earn his long-awaited first win at Lime Rock Park. Matos shared the podium with Evan Slater, who returned to the series for the first time in 2024 to finish second, and Thomas Annunziata, who drove from the very back of the field to finish third.

Taking the green flag from the point position, Matos had a flawless start in his No. 60 Concord American Flagpole Ford Mustang, pulling ahead of Slater’s No. 17 CUBE 3/Franklin Road/M1 Ford Mustang, which started beside him on the front row. Fourth-place starter Ben Maier (No. 80 BOE Marine/Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang) quickly worked his way around Jake Drew (No. 77 Silver Hare Racing/PRG Chevrolet Camaro), claiming the third position by the conclusion of the first lap. Far behind them, Thomas Annunziata (No. 90 Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang), who was forced to start 20th after a technical infraction during qualifying disallowed his time, began a march to the front with terrific speed, entering the top 10 after only six laps and claiming the eighth position by the first full-course caution on lap 15.

When racing resumed on lap 19, Matos easily maintained his lead, while Annunziata had an impressive restart, jumping up to the sixth position. While Matos, Slater, Maier and Drew led the field, Annunziata took on Thomas Merrill (No. 26 HP Tuners/Cope Race Cars Ford Mustang), passing him for the fifth position on lap 22. Another double yellow on lap 24 re-racked the field for a lap-31 restart, which fortunately remained green, despite mid-pack mayhem sending two Pro/Am Challenge competitors spinning in traffic. The top five ran nose to tail while top-10 drivers Merrill, Boris Said Jr. (No. 75 HendrickCars.com/Silver Hare Chevrolet Camaro), Adrian Wlostowski (No. 3 CMI/Spot-On Services Ford Mustang), Josh Hurley (No. 8 Greenlight Simulation/BCR Ford Mustang) and Gio Ruggiero (No. 40 Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang) jockeyed aggressively for position.

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=1479]

While Matos and Slater were smoothly making laps in the front, Annunziata stalked Drew, claiming the fourth position by lap 47. He then took on Maier, making his way around him on lap 55 to claim third place. A full-course yellow on lap 57 regrouped the field for an eight-lap shootout beginning on lap 60. Annunziata was all over Slater after the restart, cleanly but aggressively challenging him for the runner-up spot, but Slater was flawless in his defense. As Matos clicked off the laps from the lead, a big crash with two laps remaining brought out the yellow flag, forcing the race to end under caution. Matos earned his 22nd-career victory, followed across the finish line by Slater and Annunziata. Maier and Drew rounded out the top five.

“It’s an amazing feeling right now,” said Matos. “I’ve never had luck here at Lime Rock Park; I’ve always had something happen: a lapped car or rain or something breaking on the car. But the Nitro Motorsports guys prepared an amazing car. Not only my car, but they prepared all four race cars to be the best of the best. To come out here and put on a good show for the fans, it’s an amazing time. I’ve got to thank Chris Dyson for allowing us to compete at the highest level with Concord American Flagpole. This is Dyson’s home track and it’s a very special event for him, and we’re really happy to deliver a good result. This should put us in the lead for the championship, so it’s a good day for me, for [teammate] Thomas [Annunziata], and for everyone on the team. Just a really good day.”

Starting beside Matos will be Evan Slater (No. 17 CUBE 3/Franklin Road/M1 Ford Mustang), who qualified second with a best time of 52.084s.

“It feels great to get the pole today,” said Matos. “I think the Nitro Motorsports team has prepped four amazing race cars. All the cars are very fast. We were a little bit behind in practice, but my crew chief worked really hard to make sure the car was the way I liked it for qualifying.

“Qualifying was a bit complicated. I was catching traffic on my fastest lap, so I had to sacrifice that lap and go for another one. The car was good enough that I managed to put a couple of good laps together and get the pole position, very close to the track record.

“Hats off to Concord America Flagpole. This is Chris Dyson’s home track, and there’s a lot of anticipation for this event for us. It’s amazing to deliver a good result. Let’s get it done tomorrow.”

The team gave everything building a new car for [team owner] Doug [Peterson]. We have to remember this team has managed to put a driver on the podium every single race this season except the second race in Detroit, and (teammate) Austin (Green) had a great shot of finishing on the podium there before he got caught in a wreck. Hats off to the 3-Dimensional Services Group team for giving me a car that I can be very competitive with in qualifying.
