The New Orleans Saints filed several roster moves on Friday’s update to the daily NFL transactions wire: the release of cornerback Keith Washington from injured reserve, the waiving of linebacker Quentin Poling, and the re-signing of defensive back Lawrence Woods. We already broke down Washington’s departure here, but here’s what you need to know about the other news.

Poling, formerly of the Miami Dolphins, was signed following minicamps back in May but struggled to stand out at a crowded position group in training camp. Between several high draft picks (Pete Werner and Zack Baun) and practice squad projects (Andrew Howell and Chase Hansen), the return of Kwon Alexander to join veterans Demario Davis and Kaden Elliss created a morass that Poling couldn’t escape. He should revert to injured reserve after clearing waivers, though he may receive an injury settlement like Washington (as could wide receiver Jalen McCleskey).

As for Woods: the rookie out of Truman State was waived after the first week of training camp, but Patrick Robinson’s surprise retirement opened a spot in the rotation, so he’s returned to New Orleans. He’s still a longshot to make the team but he’ll have opportunities to make an impact on special teams, where he’s impressed as a returner at the college level with multiple kicks returned for touchdowns. It’s a slim chance, but he does have a chance.

Vikings waive RB Tony Brooks-James, announce LB Quentin Poling signing

The Vikings ended up waiving running back Tonny Brooks-James, the team announced Saturday.

Running back Tony Brooks-James plays a position that has an abundance of talent on the Vikings roster.

The Vikings have Dalvin Cook, Alexander Mattison, Mike Boone and
Ameer Abdullah all at the same position.  That can make it hard for a player like Brooks-James to make the team.

It would have been interesting to see if Brooks-James could still do it with all the obstacles in his way, but the Vikings ended up waiving the running back, the team announced Saturday.

That wasn’t the only roster move Minnesota announced. The team also said that it has officially signed linebacker Quentin Poling.

According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, free agent linebacker Quentin Poling was expected to sign with Minnesota, pending COVID-19 testing and a physical, so this move shouldn’t come as a shock.

Poling can compete for a linebacker spot lower on the depth chart. It would be very surprising if he became a starter, but there’s the possibility he could still fill out a reserve and special teams role.

Report: Vikings expected to sign LB Quentin Poling

The Vikings are reportedly expected to sign a linebacker in free agency.

It’s late in the offseason, but the Vikings are still making moves to sign players. This time, the team is reportedly expected to sign a player who could fill out a linebacker depth role.

According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, free agent linebacker Quentin Poling is expected to sign with Minnesota, pending COVID-19 testing and a physical.

Poling’s most recent team was the Raiders. He was originally drafted by the Dolphins in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He also had a brief stint with the Falcons.

Poling projects as more of a player who could fill out the roster. It’s safe to say Eric Kendricks and Anthony Barr will both be starters in 2020, barring anything unexpected. After that, the likes of Eric Wilson, Ben Gedeon, Cameron Smith, Troy Dye, DeMarquis Gates and others will compete for roster spots.

If Poling eventually signs with the Vikings, he will be among that group vying for the various positions down the depth chart. He could also fill out a special teams role.

Former Dolphins LB Quentin Poling signs with Raiders

Former Miami Dolphins draft selection Quentin Poling has signed a 1-year deal with the Raiders.

This going to take some getting used to. The Las Vegas Raiders signed former Miami Dolphins linebacker Quentin Poling yesterday — ensuring that the former Dolphins linebacker will not return to South Florida any time soon.

Poling, who was originally a 7th-round selection by the Dolphins in the 2018 NFL Draft, spent his entire first season in South Florida with the Dolphins but failed to make the 53-man roster that year. He was cut again before the start of the 2019 season and proceeded to latch onto the Raiders’ practice squad, where he spent most of the year before appearing in one game with Oakland as a special teams contributor.

Poling will go down as a swing and a miss for Miami — but remember that anything after the 4th or 5th round of any NFL Draft equates to a total shot in the dark and roll of the dice. NFL teams bat a very low percentage that late in the draft, so more than anything else Miami’s selection of Poling fell as par for the course.
