Who They’re For: Golfers looking for more distance and forgiveness along with shot-shaping ability off the tee and from the turf.

The Skinny: PXG uses multiple materials, including new stainless steel alloys and moveable weights, to boost forgiveness and let players tweak the launch angle and spin rate of its latest fairway woods.

The Deep Dive: Golf equipment companies such as PXG don’t control how fast you swing a club or how well you strike the ball, but through research and clever engineering, they can make clubs that will optimize your good shots and reduce the severity of your mis-hits. It’s a tough job, and when it comes to fairway woods, it is even harder because fairway woods need to hit the ball to the same distance and on the same trajectory when you hit shots off the tee or from the turf.

PXG’s latest fairway wood, the Black Ops, uses exotic materials, moveable weights and an adjustable hosel to help golfers hit their fairway wood shots farther and more consistently.

A key to the Black Ops fairway woods is a new high-strength stainless steel alloy used in the face. PXG said it is stronger than other steels commonly used in fairway woods, so the hitting area can be made thinner and lighter. In fact, the face is now just 0.07 inches thick. That allows it to be more flexible at impact, which results in more ball speed, a higher launch angle and less spin.

The Black Ops fairway woods have also been made with a compression-molded carbon fiber crown that reduces weight on the top of the head and lowers the center of gravity. The chassis is made from a light but strong material, AM355 stainless steel, that allowed designers to save even more weight.

That saved mass has been repurposed in the form of three adjustable screws in the sole of the Black Ops, with the three ports located in the heel, toe and the back-middle areas. The club comes standard with a 12-gram weight in the back and 2.5-gram weights in the heel and toe to maximize forgiveness and help create a higher launch angle, but putting the heavier weight in the heel will encourage a draw and adding it to the toe port will create a fade bias.

To help golfers find a club that hits shots to the ideal distance, PXG has made the Black Ops with an adjustable hosel that can increase or decrease the loft by as many as 1.5 degrees and raise or lower the lie angle.

PXG designed the 0211 drivers, fairway woods and hybrids to be a high-performing alternative at a lower price.

Who It’s For: Golfers who love classic-looking equipment and simple designs made to provide more distance on a budget.

The Skinny: With the price of many new woods having climbed in recent years, PXG designed the 0211 drivers, fairway woods and hybrids to be high-performing alternatives at a lower price.

The Deep Dive: In July, PXG released the newest version of its 0211 irons, the 0211 XCON, designed to utilize several technologies and features originally added to the brand’s top-shelf 0311 family but at a more budget-friendly price. At that time, no new woods were released, keeping the 2021 version of the 0211 drivers, fairway woods and hybrids in the lineup.

Now PXG is bringing out a new generation of 0211 woods, and as with the irons the idea is to make clubs that are more affordable but that still utilize premium materials and designs.

In the address position, the 0211 driver ($299) is one of the cleanest clubs PXG has designed. It is an all-titanium club with a Ti811 body and a variable-thickness Ti412 face designed to flex efficiently at impact to boost ball speed and distance.

The driver features an adjustable hosel mechanism that allows players and fitters to increase or decrease the club’s loft by as many 1.5 degrees. It is available with 9, 10.5 or 12 degrees of loft at a stock length of 45.5 inches.

The 0211 fairway woods ($249) and hybrids ($249) were designed with AM355 stainless steel bodies and HT1770 stainless steel faces.

The fairway woods are available as a 3-wood (15 degrees), 5-wood (18 degrees) and 7-wood (21 degrees) while the hybrids are available as a 3-iron (19 degrees), 4-iron (22 degrees), 5-iron (25 degrees), 6-iron (28 degrees) and 7-iron replacement (31 degrees). Both the fairway woods and hybrids have a low profile and a squared-face shape that is popular with a large number of players and that inspires confidence at address.

PXG was founded eight years ago and made its mark by developing irons that looked like a better-player’s muscleback blade but performed like a game-improvement club. To make that happen, the company’s designers hid technologies inside the hollow-bodied heads to increase ball speed while adding the company’s now-signature weight screws around the head to boost forgiveness.

Drivers, fairway woods, hybrids, wedges and putters soon followed the irons, and then PXG started developing different types of clubs to address the needs of different players.

Last February, PXG launched the 0811 GEN4 family of drivers, which includes three models: the low-spin GEN4 X, the tour-inspired GEN4 XT and the ultra-forgiving GEN4 XF. At the time, fairway woods and hybrids were also released that matched the GEN4 X. They were ideally suited for golfers who wanted a lower, more-piercing ball flight.

Now, PXG is releasing the GEN4 XF 0341 fairway woods and GEN4 XF 0317 hybrids for golfers who want more forgiveness. While the clubs are designed to do different things, they share several technologies and features.
