UConn defeats Purdue to win second straight national championship

The UConn Huskies defeated the Purdue Boilermakers, 75-60, to win their second straight national championship in the NCAA Tournament.

College basketball has a repeat national champion for the first time since 2007 after Danny Hurley and the UConn Huskies defeated Matt Painter’s Purdue Boilermakers, 75-60, on Monday night in Glendale.

The Huskies become the first repeat champion since the Florida Gators went back-to-back in 2006 and 2007, and the third total since the tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985. The other was Duke in 1991 and 1992, led by point guard Bobby Hurley – Danny’s brother and the current head coach at Arizona State.

UConn, who lost five of their eight leading scorers from last year’s championship squad, secured the title on the back of a full team effort on the defensive end, holding Purdue to 44.4% shooting from the field and just 1-7 from the three point line.

Zach Edey was left in single coverage all night long, and while he had a productive night – finishing with 37 points and 10 rebounds on 15-25 shooting – the supporting cast for the Boilermakers did not step up to help him out.

Meanwhile, for the second year in a row Tristen Newton led UConn in scoring in a national championship victory, dropping 20 points and seven assists and cementing himself as among the best NCAA Tournament performers of all-time.

Newcomers Cam Spencer (11 points, eight rebounds) and Stephon Castle (15 points) had great games as well, while Donovan Clingan focused his effort on the defensive side of the ball while chipping in 11 points and five rebounds.

UConn not only won back-to-back titles, they finished the 2024 NCAA Tournament with the largest total margin of victory of all-time, and have now won every game they played in the last two tournaments by 13 or more points – a level of dominance that puts this program squarely in the dynasty conversation.

On the Purdue side, this ends their quest to do what Virginia did in 2019 – win a championship the year after losing to a No. 16 seed. It also keeps the Big Ten’s streak of not winning a national title alive, which dates back to 2000 when Tom Izzo and Michigan State got it done.

Want to watch Purdue and UConn play for the title in person? Limited tickets for the Men’s NCAA Championship game still remain for as little as $192.

After almost three weeks of true basketball madness, chalk reigns supreme in the men’s bracket, as No. 1 Purdue and No. 1 UConn will play for a national championship.

The Boilermakers turned No. 11 NC State’s Cinderella run into the proverbial pumpkin behind 20 points and 12 rebounds from Zach Edey, though the Wolfpack have every reason to hold their heads high after a fantastic tournament run.

No. 4 Alabama played UConn closer than any team so far in the NCAA Tournament, but the Huskies were too much when it mattered most, closing the game on a 30-16 run, and defeating the Crimson Tide 86-72.

Broadcast information and tipoff times revealed for Final Four

The final leg of March Madness begins with the men’s Final Four in Phoenix at State Farm Stadium.

The Final Four is officially set as the NC State Wolfpack and Purdue Boilermakers both punched their tickets to Phoenix, or Glendale where the games are being played.

The Wolfpack continued their hot streak knocking off the Duke Blue Devils for the second time since the regular season ended. The Purdue Boilermakers had to fend off a really good Tennessee Volunteers team led by Dalton Knecht. Nothing was going to stop the Purdue redemption tour on that day.

Those two teams joined the Final Four field that already included the Alabama Crimson Tide and UConn Huskies. The action will get going on Saturday from State Farm Stadium. The winners will face off on Monday night for the NCAA national championship. The favorite has to be the champions but history isn’t on their side. No one has repeated as the top dogs since the Florida Gators did it in 2006 and 2007.

Below you will find the tipoff and broadcast details for the game.

Tennessee to play top-seeded Purdue in Elite Eight, winner to Final Four

Tennessee and Purdue will meet for the second time this season

As a result of their 82-75 victory over No. 3 seed Creighton on Friday night, the Tennessee Volunteers are now back in the Elite Eight for only the second time in program history, as well as for the first time since 2010.

Now only one win away from the program’s first-ever Final Four appearance, the SEC regular season champions will now have to face Purdue, who is the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Region.

The Boilermakers, who have defeated No. 16 seed Grambling, No. 8 seed Utah State, and No. 5 seed Gonzaga so far during the NCAA Tournament, were the 2023-24 regular season champions in the Big Ten. Purdue also sits at 32-4 overall for the season (17-3 in Big Ten), and are averaging 83.8 PPG this year, led by the reigning National Player of the Year in Zach Edey at 24.6 PPG, 12.1 RPG, 2.1 APG, and 2.2 BPG.

A rematch from earlier this season, Tennessee and Purdue previously met in the Maui Invitational back on November 21, a game where the Boilermakers won by a final score of 71-67.

Who will now win the rematch between the two teams to go to the Final Four?

Prediction: Purdue 76, Tennessee 72

College hoops fans think refs weren’t calling Zach Edey fouls, including a blatant sequence vs. Gonzaga

Was Zach Edey really getting the superstar treatment here?

Zach Edey is on to the Elite Eight with Purdue, but some hoops fans think he got some star treatment from referees.

There was one particular play from the March Madness Sweet 16 win over Gonzaga that had folks steaming —  he appeared to get his elbow up high and into a Bulldogs player’s head as he was boxing out for a rebound in the first half. Then, he seemed to go over the back on Ryan Nembhard, before they got tangled up.

On that last one, yeah! Sure looks like a foul. Here are some thoughts from fans as they watched the Purdue win:

No. 5 Gonzaga played a good first 30 minutes against the Boilermakers, but Purdue hit the Bulldogs with a haymaker of a run late in the second half and pulled away, eventually defeating Gonzaga 80-68.

No. 3 Creighton made things interesting late in the game, but the Vols held on to advance to their second Elite Eight by a score of 82-75.

The Boilermakers have looked dominant during their March Madness run, but each round will get more difficult from here, and Tennessee poses a challenge that Purdue has not yet faced in the NCAA Tournament.

Tennessee has never made the Final Four, and Purdue’s last trip to the National Semifinals came all the way back in 1980. Needless to say, everything is on the line come Sunday.
