The Boilers suffered their 10th straight loss last week, 24-17, at Michigan State. They were able to cover the 14-point spread, though. QB Hudson Card was 26-for-47 for 342 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. However, the team rushed for a combined -4 yards. The Boilermakers are 3-8 ATS and 0-5 straight up on the road this year.

IU is looking to rebound from a 38-15 loss to Ohio State, which really wasn’t anywhere near that close. The Hoosiers failed to cover as 10.5-point dogs. The offense rushed 41 times for 83 yards and was only able to amass 68 yards through the air. RB Ty Son Lawton rushed 15 times for 79 yards and 2 scores.

The Hoosiers are going to try to make whatever statement they can here in order to better their chances at getting in the College Football Playoffs.

There is no bet to be made here. The only prop I would consider is for Lawton to score a touchdown, but that’s out of range at -225 as well.

PASS.

Against the spread

Purdue’s record is atrocious, but the squad isn’t hapless. Card can put up some numbers through the air. That’s something IU doesn’t do, and the clock is continuously running because of its rushing attack.

So I like PURDUE +28.5 (-105) with that extra hook to keep it within 28-and-a-hook.

Over/Under

IU is 8-2 O/U over the last 10, and Purdue is 6-5 O/U on the season. The Over has smashed in 3 of the last 4 meetings.

Again, IU is motivated to score points to impress the judges, and I really like the OVER 56.5 (-105) here.

PURDUE +1.5 (-120) has mowed through the competition, and it’s hard to envision the top-ranked team having issues with an inconsistent Indiana -1.5 (+100) side.

The Boilermakers are 6-2-1 ATS in the past 9 games overall, and 3-1-1 ATS in the past 5 on the road, while going 5-2-1 ATS in the past 8 against winning teams.

On the flip side, the Hoosiers are just 4-9 ATS in the past 13 games and 1-4 ATS in the past 5 following a straight-up loss. It’s better to take the ML, but if you want the point of insurance, this is the way to go.

Over/Under

OVER 139.5 (-105) is the lean, but ever so slightly. Go with a half-unit play at most.

Purdue leads the Big Ten with 86.2 points per game. The Boilermakers have scored more than 90 points in each of their last two games, including a 96-88 double-overtime triumph over Illinois last time out Monday. Purdue went 8-for-18 (44.4%) from beyond the arc in that game and is shooting 40.0% from distance over its last five games.

Indiana is 11-0 at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall and has won eight in a row against the spread (ATS) there. The Hoosiers lead the Big Ten in defense with just 62.7 points allowed per game. In keeping scores low, IU relies not so much on creating turnovers but on contesting 2s and 3s and controlling the defensive glass.

This will be a tough test for Indiana, which hasn’t played as high a quality schedule as Purdue. However, the Hoosiers can perhaps bang around in the paint against the Boilermakers and that gives them a shot in their barn.

IU is a more veteran group and one that plays near-elite defense. It gets to the line and has played a couple of its best offensive games of late.

Against the spread

IU has won four in a row ATS against teams with winning road records, and the home team is 5-2-1 ATS in the last eight series meetings.

Playing back-to-back road games in the Big Ten is tough sledding. When the front half of that trip turns into a double-overtime tussle, how does that impact the second game? Can tired Purdue prevail in a hostile road environment?

  1. Indiana hasn’t defeated Purdue since Feb. 20, 2016, a stretch of seven straight games in the intrastate series. In that win streak, the Boilermakers have gone 4-2-1 against the number. Their average winning margin (straight-up) has been nine points.
  2. Indiana’s F Trayce Jackson-Davis has logged five double-doubles this season. That feat includes IU’s last three games. Over games against Maryland, Wisconsin, and Nebraska, the 6-foot-9 sophomore has tallied 60 points while grabbing 30 rebounds.
  3. Purdue is playing its fourth consecutive game away from home. The Boilermakers haven’t played at Mackey Arena since Dec. 25 and have played only one game on home hardwood since Dec. 16. If any road fatigue is setting in, it has perhaps become most apparent in PU’s shooting touch. Purdue shot a combined 36.6% from the floor in its last two games (at Illinois, at Michigan State).
