Classic SNES RPG is finally coming to Steam and PlayStation

Square Enix’s classic RPG Live A Live is making its debut on Steam and PlayStation soon, after a period of Switch exclusivity

Square Enix’s classic RPG Live A Live is making its debut on Steam and PlayStation soon, after a period of Switch exclusivity, the publisher announced in a press release. Live A Live will launch on April 27, 2023, for PS4, PS5, and PC via Steam. Pre-orders are open now on digital storefronts, and you can download a free demo that lets you play three of Live A Live’s opening chapters and transfers your progress to the full game.

Live A Live’s adventure unfolds across the centuries and follows eight heroes – a warrior from pre-history, a futuristic robot, a samurai from Edo-period Japan, and a gunslinger from the wild west, among others. Each tale gradually weaves itself into a broader story, but what ending you get depends on the actions you take.

Live A Live originally released on Super Famicom in Japan, but was never localized until the HD-2D remaster launched in 2022. Octopath Traveler’s Team Asano developed the Live A Live remaster, with Takashi Tokito, the original director, as producer and a revised score created under the supervision of Yoko Shimomura, the game’s original composer who later penned the scores for Final Fantasy XV and the Kingdom Hearts series.

PlayStation Plus subscribers who pre-order the game will get a 20 percent discount. Square Enix is offering the same discount on Steam, but it runs until May 11, 2023.

PS5 Discord integration is live in new conole update

The latest PlayStation update lets you join Discord calls on PS5 at last, and it introduces some other useful features as well

The latest PlayStation update lets you join Discord calls on PS5 at last, and it introduces some other useful features as well. PS5 Discord integration lets you link your PlayStation Network account with Discord and join or host calls on your console, but you’ll still need to start the process on your PC or mobile device.

With your accounts linked, and your PS5 firmware up to date, start your call on Discord. Choose the “Voice Options” setting, and you can pick which console to transfer your call to. From there, you can take over on the PS5 and even use the DualSense’s built-in microphone and adjust the volume via Discord.

You can check out full details of how the process works on Discord’s blog.

The PS5 update also adds a much-requested feature that makes playing digital games you own a physical copy of easier. If you installed the disc version of a game and decide to get the digital version or download it via PS Plus, you can play the digital version from the physical installation without having to insert the disc. In short, you don’t have to download the – often massive – files again or keep the disc inserted, making the process more convenient all around.

Finally, the new update adds variable refresh rate options for 1440p resolutions for all games that included VRR options previously.

Sony says Microsoft may make Call of Duty on PlayStation unplayable

Sony believes Microsoft’s promise for parity between Call of Duty on PlayStation and Xbox may not amount to much.

Sony believes Microsoft’s promise for parity between Call of Duty on PlayStation and Xbox may not amount to much. A court document from February, recently made public (thanks, The Verge), outlines the PlayStation maker’s concerns over how well Call of Duty might perform on the console if the Xbox Activision deal goes through, including the belief that Microsoft may introduce bugs in the game.

Sony presented its concerns in a lengthy section discussing why a “behavioral remedy” designed to hold Microsoft accountable and prevent harm to competition would be unacceptable. The U.K. Competition and Markets Authority has not proposed such a remedy, though the agency said one may be considered, depending on Microsoft’s answers to the CMA’s initial report.

The Santa Monica-based company said behavioral restrictions would only give Microsoft more room to cause harm and called for structural restrictions instead.

“Microsoft might release a PlayStation version of Call of Duty where bugs and errors emerge only on the game’s final level or after later updates,” Sony said in the document. “Even if such degradations could be swiftly detected, any remedy would likely come too late, by which time the gaming community would have lost confidence in PlayStation as a go-to venue to play Call of Duty.

The CMA’s research into the deal turned up a statistic that showed a sizeable segment of consumers plays Call of Duty on PlayStation. Microsoft recently disputed the figure and reiterated its promise of parity on both platforms, though the Xbox maker has yet to make details of that plan public.

Sony’s other concerns include poor multiplayer performance and optimization on PlayStation, should Microsoft focus on the games’ Xbox version after launch, and the belief that Microsoft may make Call of Duty available only on Xbox Game Pass.

The CMA is expected to issue a final report in late April, along with the European Union. The EU is reportedly planning to permit the deal without requiring major concessions.

The best cozy games to relax and unwind with

The best cozy games are there for you at the end of a long day or if you need something relaxing to take your mind off the real world

Cozy games are there for you at the end of a long day or if you just need something relaxing to take your mind off the real world for a while, when something more demanding just won’t cut it. Stardew Valley’s launch and meteoric rise to popularity opened the gates for a flood of games, indie and otherwise, that prefer a laid-back approach to leisure, all with something unique to offer. Some give you a relaxing life on a farm, others scratch that desperate itch to clean something with power tools, and a few even let you bring color back to a drab world. We’ve picked out some of the best cozy games you can play, most of which are available on every modern platform.

Final Fantasy 16 ditches the RPG series’ tradition of quirky minigames

If you’re looking forward to seeing what Final Fantasy 16 minigames Square Enix has in store, you’re in for a disappointment

If you’re looking forward to seeing what Final Fantasy 16 minigames Square Enix has in store, you’re in for a disappointment. Producer Naoki Yoshida told Gematsu in a recent interview that the series’ usual quirky side games just don’t fit with the upcoming RPG’s darker tone.

“We have countries at war—we can’t really have some blitzball matches going on when people are killing each other,” Yoshida said. “And then when you have this hero who’s talking about and driven by revenge be like, ‘I’m gonna go out and fish!’ In that sense, there aren’t those types of light things that are going to detract from the story that we’re trying to tell.”

Instead, Square Enix is adding an arcade mode, where you can replay stages, earn points for your performance, and try to beat your score.

The statement seems slightly at odds with the equally serious stories of death and destruction Final Fantasy usually tells – of going on a road trip while the neighboring empire invades your homeland, for example, or turning yourself into a meme during your hunt for Chaos.

Still, it is in keeping with what Yoshida said the team’s overall goal is, of returning to the setting and style of the first six Final Fantasy games, before critics used JRPG as a pejorative. Final Fantasy 6, for example, tells a grim story of war and apocalypse, and despite having some lighthearted moments, there are no quirky side games.

Final Fantasy 16 launches for PS5 on June 22, 2023.

Sony announces LeBron James-themed DualSense and PS5 cover

Sony is making a LeBron James DualSense and PS5 cover as part of its PlayStation Playmaker program

Sony is making a LeBron James DualSense and PS5 cover as part of its PlayStation Playmaker program. The news comes two days after PlayStation’s senior vice president of global marketing announced the Playmaker program and partnership with James, and both accessories will launch sometime later in 2023.

“It’s still crazy to think a kid from Akron who grew up playing games is getting to create something like this,” James, self-proclaimed NBA GOAT, said in a PlayStation Blog post. “Designing a console cover and controller with PlayStation that gives a nod to my I Promise students and where we come from is a pretty cool thing. I hope it’s something that continues to inspire everyone who touches it, and that they have a little fun finding meaning in every detail.”

James helped design the DualSense and PS5 cover and included an adage as the central motif, with elements and “personal imagery” that James said was important to him throughout his life and career.

“Nothing is given, everything is earned” feature on the DualSense touchpad and the center of the PS5 cover in a stylized font, while the controller’s right grip has “Build, uplift,” “Chosen ones,” and “I promise” in the same font.

The design also includes PlayStation’s signature buttons and crowns depicted in different colors.

Sony hasn’t opened pre-orders for the LeBron James DualSense yet, but if it’s anything like the recent Hogwarts Legacy DualSense, they probably won’t last long once they are available.

Some of the best PlayStation games are coming to PS Plus in February

Sony announced the PS Plus Extra and Premium games for February 2023, and among them are some of the PlayStation’s best, both old and new

Sony announced the PS Plus Extra and Premium games for February 2023, and among them are some of the PlayStation’s best, both old and new. Leading the charge is Horizon: Forbidden West for PS4 and PS5, a somewhat surprising addition considering the open-world game only launched in February 2022.

Premium and Extra members also The Quarry and Resident Evil 7, alongside Tekken 7, Borderlands 3, and the modern cult classic The Forgotten City. If you prefer your free games to have a bit more JRPG in them, then you’re in luck. Scarlet Nexus from Bandai Namco is also up for grabs on PS4 and PS5, along with a trio of games from Tokyo RPG Factory: I Am Setsuna, Lost Sphear, and Onikani.

Premium subscribers have a few new PS1 games to sink into. The Legend of Dragoon, Sony’s answer to Final Fantasy 7 back in the ‘90s, joins Wild Arms 2 and Harvest Moon: Back to Nature, the farm-sim game that eventually inspired Stardew Valley. Destroy All Humans is also a random inclusion for the Premium tier, so if you haven’t checked that out yet, here’s your chance.

All these games will be available beginning Feb. 21, 2023, and as always, games you download during this period will remain playable so long as your PS Plus subscription is active.

Subscribers to the basic tier can get a Destiny 2 expansion and Evil Dead The Game for free in February.

Sony unveils Hogwarts Legacy DualSense and it’s already sold out

Sony revealed a special-edition Hogwarts Legacy DualSense controller for the PlayStation 5, and as you’d expect, stock didn’t last long

Sony revealed a special-edition Hogwarts Legacy DualSense controller for the PlayStation 5, and as you’d expect, availability didn’t last long. Sony unveiled the controller early on Feb. 10, 2023, and opened pre-orders ahead of the DualSense’s launch in the U.S. on Feb. 28, 2023.

Within hours, stock was already gone, and scalpers were posting listings on social media and reseller sites.

The Hogwarts Legacy DualSense controller is black with heavy gold lines wrapping around the grips in waves. On the touchpad is a stylized version of Hogwarts itself, and the game’s name is on the back of the controller, presumably in case you forget what you bought at some point.

Outside of the design, it’s the same DualSense, which the game, admittedly, doesn’t make much use of anyway. The retail price should be the same as any other DualSense – $79.99 – so bear that in mind if you see it pop up on eBay or somewhere similar for eye-wateringly high prices.

The controller is a limited-time offer, so it’s unclear whether Sony will restock before launch or have more available at a later date. If you’re very keen, and slightly reckless with your possessions, you could always get a black DualSense and make your own Hogwarts design with glittery gold paint.

Sony is ending the PS Plus Collection for PS5

PS5 owners have until May 2023 to download the PS Plus Collection on their systems before Sony ends the offer of free PS4 games for good

PS5 owners have until May 9, 2023, to download the PS Plus Collection on their systems before Sony ends the offer for good. Since the console launched in 2020, Sony has provided a selection of the best PS4 games as free downloads for PS Plus subscribers at any tier on the PS5, including Persona 5, Bloodborne, God of War, and The Last of Us Remastered, but not for much longer.

Any games downloaded from the collection before that date will still be available so long as you remain a PS Plus subscriber. Here’s the full list of games included.

  • Batman: Arkham Knight
  • Battlefield 1
  • Bloodborne
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 3
  • Crash Bandicoot: N-Sane Trilogy
  • Days Gone
  • Detroit: Become Human
  • Fallout 4
  • Final Fantasy 15 Royal Edition (includes almost all DLC)
  • God of War (2018)
  • Infamous: Second Son
  • Monster Hunter: World
  • Mortal Kombat X
  • Persona 5
  • Ratchet & Clank (2016)
  • Resident Evil 7 biohazard
  • The Last Guardian
  • The Last of Us Remastered
  • Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
  • Until Dawn

Sony made no mention of why it’s shuttering the PS Plus Collection. Given the Santa Monica-based company’s focus on the revamped PS Plus subscription service, with a wider selection of popular games each month, perhaps the thought was that the two collections overlapped.

Whatever the reason, if you’re even remotely interested in any of the PS Plus Collection games, make sure to download them before May.
