Ozzy Osbourne’s PlayStation VR2 trailer is bizarre, but hilarious

The prince of darkness is all about taking down robot lizards, it seems.

Mere days remain until PlayStation VR2 is out, and Ozzy Osbourne couldn’t be more excited – yes, the heavy metal icon is all for it.

At least, that’s what a bizarre new PlayStation VR2 trailer released Monday suggests. In it, Osbourne (pretends to) play through Horizon: Call of the Mountain – shouting about all the robot dinosaurs he wants to kill. Like, for real. The prince of darkness apparently loves cutting-edge tech; who knew? I wonder what his opinion on the Valve Index or Meta Quest headsets might be.

Check out the trailer for yourself below. It’s certainly a strange, if not memorable, way to showcase Sony’s new hardware.

If this doesn’t sell you on the device, nothing will. For those interested – PlayStation VR 2 comes out on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2023, and will start at $549.99. Of course, you’ll need a PS5 to use the PlayStation VR 2.

There’s a decent selection of launch titles, including Horizon: Call of the Mountain, Before Your Eyes, Cities VR, Rez Infinite, Pavlov VR, The Last Clockwinder, Creed: Rise to Glory, and many more. Several of this month’s biggest games are on the platform, so there are plenty of titles to play.

The PSVR 2 launch lineup includes Gran Turismo, Tetris, and more

Sony announced the PS VR 2 launch lineup of three dozen games, including Tetris Effect, Gran Turismo 7, and more

Sony announced the PS VR 2 launch lineup of three dozen games, including Tetris Effect, Gran Turismo 7, and more. Shawn Benson, Sony’s head of third-party relations, announced the lineup in a new PlayStation Blog post, highlighting some of the other indies and big-name games that will be available within a month of the PS VR 2 release date on Feb. 22, 2023.

Among these are the indie hit Before Your Eyes, Rez Infinite, Cities VR, and After The Fall. Resident Evil Village VR is also included on the list, along with a range of calmer puzzle games. The Last Clockwinder is one of them, where you make a network of clones to help create a haven for planting and harvesting the galaxy’s last seeds.

There’s also Puzzling Places, where you create miniatures of iconic locations from around the world using the PS VR 2’s unique features, including haptic feedback and tracking.

If you’re after something a bit more active, NFL Pro Era and Creed: Rise to Glory might scratch the itch, or you can pick up an enhanced version of Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge and The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners Chapter 2.

Guerrilla Games’ Horizon: Call of the Mountain is also still planned for a launch day release.

PlayStation VR2’s ‘see-through’ feature will ensure you don’t trip on furniture

The days of accidentally smashing your living room TV are presumably over.

The most challenging part of any VR setup is ensuring nobody crashes into a wall mid-session since you usually can’t see immediate surroundings while wearing one of those enormous headsets. Thankfully, Sony is combating this issue with some new functionality in PlayStation VR2.

On Tuesday, Sony gave everyone an early look at PlayStation VR2. Specifically, the headset’s all-new ‘see-through view’ feature.

“With PS VR2, you can see your surroundings while wearing the headset with our new see-through feature,” Yasuo Takahashi, senior staff product manager at SIE, said via the PlayStation Blog. “It comes in handy when you want to easily check where the PS VR2 Sense controllers are in your room without taking the headset off.”

Players can manually set boundaries with the device, where alerts will let you know if you’ve wandered out of bounds. Presumably, away from anything shouldn’t be bumped into (IE: mirrors or anything delicate). The safe zone can be changed at any time — pretty nifty stuff.

There isn’t a release date for PlayStation VR2 yet, though it may arrive either this fall or early in 2023. The device is taking full advantage of that PS5 horsepower too, so it’ll be a significant upgrade over prior iterations.

Here’s your first look at PS5’s VR headset

The PlayStation VR2 headset and VR2 Sense controllers have finally been revealed.

Sony has finally shown off the design for the brand new PlayStation VR2, the next-generation virtual reality headset designed for the PlayStation 5 console.

PlayStation VR was a surprisingly successful venture for Sony, even if the idea of a several hundred dollar peripheral put off many prospective buyers. Despite hesitance, it went on to sell well and has dozens of high-quality VR exclusives available for the platform.

Our new look at the PSVR’s successor comes courtesy of the PlayStation Blog and a post from Hideaki Nishino. In addition to the headset we also get to see the final revision of the VR2 Sense controller. The branding here seems to be an extension of the PS5 controller’s DualSense.

[mm-video type=video id=01fqmhspcsm008ja7k8e playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fqmhspcsm008ja7k8e/01fqmhspcsm008ja7k8e-28c1fd74a117a5ee1988272e9ff1e908.jpg]

Hideaki Nishino explains in the post that the PSVR2’s is intended to be more than functional, but; “become an attractive part of your living room decor,” which is certainly one way to look at it. The headset still uses the original PSVR design in many areas, such as the firm, adjustable headstrap, which is divisive among VR fans.

The blog also includes a design tidbit from Yujin Morisawa, who explains that the headset now includes a small vent on the inside to let air out and keep the lens from fogging up after extensive play. A nice move.

But what will be most exciting for anyone that owns a PlayStation VR headset currently is this piece of news: “the PS VR2 system comes in a simple, single cord set up so you can connect to your games immediately.” After the chaos PSVR owners have with breakout boxes, power cables and HDMI inputs, this is a God-send and will make the act of setting up and playing VR experiences much easier than the original.

The VR2 Sense controllers might be the most exciting part of this package, promising the same kind of detailed haptic feedback that you can experience on the DualSense controllers. If Sony’s promises all hold up this could easily be the biggest addition to the PSVR2 platform.

PlayStation VR2 development kits are already with game developers, but we currently can’t be sure when we’ll be able to buy PSVR2 headsets of our very own.

PS VR2 features a 4K OLED display and a new game: Horizon Call of the Mountain

Sony has officially unveiled its next-gen virtual reality headset for PS5.

Sony has officially unveiled PS VR2, its next-generation virtual reality headset for PS5. Featuring a 4K OLED screen with a 110-degree field of view, capable of frame rates between 90 and 120fps, it should offer a VR experience on par with premium PC headsets.

Much like the Quest 2, there’s no need for an external camera either. The new PlayStation VR2 Sense controller is tracked through cameras integrated into the headset itself. The headset also comes packed with sensory feedback, eye tracking, and 3D audio. Much like the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback, the sensory feedback will offer subtle vibrations to immerse you in the experience.

One of the most off-putting things about PSVR’s original form was how much of a pain it was to connect up. Thankfully, PS VR2 comes with a single cable setup for ease of use.

Here are the official specs:

  • Display method: OLED.
  • Panel resolution: 2000 x 2040 per eye.
  • Panel refresh rate: 90Hz, 120Hz.
  • Lens separation: Adjustable.
  • Field of View: Approx. 110 degrees.
  • Sensors: Motion Sensor: Six-axis motion sensing system (three-axis gyroscope, three-axis accelerometer).
  • Attachment Sensor: IR Proximity sensor.
  • Cameras: 4 cameras for headset and controller trackingIR camera for eye tracking per eye.
  • Feedback: Vibration on headset.
  • Communication with PS5: USB Type-C.
  • Audio Input: Built-in microphone; Output: Stereo headphone jack.

Sony has also announced the first game coming to the VR set: Horizon Call of the Mountain from Guerrilla, developer of Horizon Forbidden West, and Firesprite, developer of Playroom VR.

“The story of Horizon Call of the Mountain will be told through the eyes of an entirely new character,” Guerilla said in a statement on Twitter. “We’ll meet Aloy, as well as returning and new faces along the way, and we can’t wait for you to meet the protagonist of this adventure soon.”
