Notre Dame unable to keep up with Florida State in loss

Not quite enough to win on a cold and snowy day.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The souls that braved the snowy and icy conditions in South Bend saw a good contest between Notre Dame and Florida State. It was a game that ultimately wasn’t decided until late in regulation. However, the Irish still are a young team learning how to win, and it didn’t happen in a 67-58 Seminoles victory.

The Irish (7-10, 2-4) trailed by four at halftime but have held the lead but for an 0-for-6 showing at the free-throw line from [autotag]Kebba Njie[/autotag] and [autotag]Matt Zona[/autotag]. The second half saw the Seminoles (10-6, 4-1) increase their lead to as much as 14.

While the Irish slowly chipped away and were able to cut that deficit to three with 1:25 to play, the Seminoles proved capable of weathering the storm and held on to win a game in which they had more success on offense as well as smothering defense.

Primo Spears led the Seminoles with 13 points off the bench. Jamir Watkins scored 12, and 10 points apiece came from Darin Green Jr. and Jalen Warley.

Despite the loss, [autotag]Markus Burton[/autotag] led all scorers with 20 points. [autotag]J.R. Konieczny[/autotag] contributed 11 points but also committed five turnovers.

Florida State Men’s Basketball adds Georgetown guard Primo Spears to roster

Florida State looking to rebound from a tough 2022-2023 season picked up a big piece of their roster for next season on Saturday.

The Florida State Seminoles and head coach Leonard Hamilton are working hard this offseason to get past a poor 2022-2023 season that saw the program go 9-23 overall.

On Saturday, the Seminoles added a big piece to their roster in Georgetown transfer guard Primo Spears.

Spears come to Tallahassee as one of the transfer portal’s top available scorers. This past season for Georgetown, he averaged 16.0 points on 40.0% shooting from the field, he also averaged 3.0 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game. Notably, it will be the third program that the Hartford, Connecticut native will be a part of as he was previously at Duquesne for the 2021-2022 season. As a freshman for the Dukes, he averaged 12.7 points per game.

While the NCAA usually only allows one free transfer in a player’s NCAA career, the coaching change at Georgetown which saw the departure of Patrick Ewing and the arrival of Ed Cooley, allowed Primo to enter the portal again and have immediate eligibility.

While Spears isn’t an efficient scorer, with his 40.8% shooting percentage which includes just 30% from deep, he did show improvement this past season while with Georgetown.

His overall shooting percentage increased from 36.7% to the aforementioned 40.8% including seeing his field goal percentage from within the perimeter rise from 39.1% to 43.4%. Spears’ effective field goal percentage and true shooting percentages also saw quality ticks up from 40.6% to 43.7% and 44.8% to 48.0% respectively. Notably, he is a quality free throw shooter, with a 77.2% conversion rate at the charity stripe.

With the Seminoles, Spears will join Devin Green in the backcourt. Green was the Seminoles’ No. 2 scorer this past season only behind guard Matthew Cleveland who has entered the transfer portal and is likely soon going to make a decision of his own. They also saw the departure of guard Caleb Mills, who is now at Memphis.

Spears will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Arkansas among finalists for talented Georgetown transfer Primo Spears

The transfer portal is heating up! Arkansas is among finalists for one of the most talented guards in the transfer portal.

The Arkansas Razorbacks are in the market for some backcourt help for next season and just made the final cut for one of the most talented transfers in the country.

Georgetown transfer guard [autotag]Primo Spears[/autotag] announced his final four schools and the Razorbacks were among those finalists. Kansas, Florida State and TCU were alongside Arkansas as other finalists for the talented guard’s services.

Spears spent his freshman season at Duquesne before transferring to Georgetown where he averaged 16.0 points (40.8 FG% and 30.0 3PT%), 3.0 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.1 steals for the Hoyas. At 6-3 and 185 pounds, Spears has decent size to compliment his elite shot making and playmaking ability that would translate very well in the SEC and Eric Musselman’s system.

When talking to 247Sports.com, Spears mentioned how Arkansas’ big wins in the NCAA Tournament are intriguing to him.

“The other two programs I’ve been apart of we couldn’t win. I feel like I’ve had individual stats but we couldn’t win,” said Spears. “With Arkansas in the last four years they’ve had Sweet 16 appearances and they need a lead guard like myself so it could be a good fit. I’ve had a great talk with coach Musselman and the staff and it’s great to hear what they have to say. I can’t wait to get on campus.”

The transfer guard didn’t set a decision date, but did say that he wanted to take visits to all four schools before making an announcement on where he’ll play next season. Right now, it seems like [autotag]Eric Musselman[/autotag] and the Hogs are in a pretty good place when it comes to Spears.

LSU has contacted talented Georgetown transfer Primo Spears, per report

Spears is one of the best players currently on the transfer market.

After a season that featured LSU’s first losing record overall since the final year under [autotag]Johnny Jones[/autotag] in 2017 and an embarrassing 2-16 mark in SEC play, no one expected coach [autotag]Matt McMahon[/autotag] to rest on his laurels entering Year 2.

In fact, the Tigers have undergone yet another campaign of offseason roster turnover. Four players have entered the portal since the conclusion of the season, and LSU has been in contact with several experienced transfers around the country.

The latest is Georgetown guard transfer [autotag]Primo Spears[/autotag], who LSU has reportedly been in contact with along with a litany of other power programs

The 6-foot-3 player out of Hartford, Connecticut, shined as a true freshman at Duquesne before transferring to the Hoyas, where he was even more productive as a sophomore in 2022-23.

He averaged 16.0 points, 5.3 assists and 3.0 rebounds, but following a frustrating season in Washington, D.C., that featured the firing of coach Patrick Ewing, Spears entered the portal.

A player of his caliber would be a major pickup for this LSU team, especially after losing starting point guard [autotag]Justice Hill[/autotag] to the transfer portal.

Seven players in the transfer portal who can help Rutgers basketball get back to the NCAA Tournament

Rutgers basketball needs to be active in the transfer portal.

Following Tuesday night’s loss to Hofstra in the NIT, Rutgers basketball clearly needs to be active in the transfer portal. Tuesday night showed that head coach Steve Pikiell needs to make the transfer portal a priority and add at least one starting veteran piece this offseason.

Things don’t need to be blown up when it comes to the roster construct as there are some strong returning pieces to the program. A healthy Mawot Mag and a growing Derek Simpson are an encouraging core, to say the least. Add incoming four-star forward Gavin Griffiths and a season of Big Ten experience for Cam Spencer and that is a nice core for Rutgers basketball to build in around.

If Cliff Omoruyi should return, then it would obviously be great news for Rutgers. And don’t forget about Paul Mulcahy, who could potentially return to Rutgers as well for a final season.

While Rutgers should and will continue to build via their high school recruiting, the transfer portal has changed the college game.
