Kayshon Boutte named a preseason AP All-American

Boutte continues to rack up the preseason accolades.

When it comes to star power on this year’s LSU team, most minds immediately go to Kayshon Boutte, and for good reason.

Boutte was on pace for a monster season in 2021 before an ankle injury ended his campaign six games into the year. Still, he finished with a team-high nine receiving touchdowns. Boutte is back and healthy this fall, and he’s considered one of college football’s top receivers.

He was recently named a preseason Associated Press All-American at receiver, making the First Team alongside USC’s Jordan Addison — last year’s Biletnikoff winner at Pittsburgh — and Ohio State’s Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who was overshadowed by Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson last season but had a breakout performance in the Rose Bowl.

Boutte is seen as a potential first-round pick, and his inclusion alongside Addison and Smith-Njigba goes to show how much he has built up his reputation. He’s the only LSU player on the AP’s list, with the most notable omission being edge rusher [autotag]BJ Ojulari[/autotag].

Big things are expected from Boutte — who made the switch to No. 7 — this fall, and he continues to rack up the preseason accolades.

This Gator made CBS Sports’ 2022 Preseason All-America team

Florida’s best player heading into the 2022 season might be someone who wasn’t even on the team in 2021.

The SEC dominates most preseason All-American rosters, but the Florida Gators aren’t exactly stocked with the talent they’re used to having. Just one Gator made the CBS Sports 2022 Preseason All-America second team, and it’s an offensive lineman who wasn’t even in Gainesville a year ago, Louisiana transfer [autotag]O’Cyrus Torrence[/autotag].

Torrence was one of three Ragin’ Cajuns that followed [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] to Florida. He joined [autotag]Montrell Johnson[/autotag] and [autotag]Kamryn Waites[/autotag] as the newest additions to the Gators and has been considered a team leader since arriving. A four-year player, Torrence has come to the SEC to prove himself before entering his name into the draft pool and hopes to rack up as many accolades as he can. A preseason second-team nod is a good start, and there’s plenty of room to surprise people.

Despite his high ratings in the transfer portal and obvious interest from many Power Five programs, many still consider Torrence an underrated player. He allowed just three pressures last season in over 320 passing plays, so the numbers are there but playing in the Group of Five leaves questions for many at the next level.

The SEC doesn’t have that problem. Look no further than the makeup of the CBS Sports All-America teams for confirmation. Eighteen of 54 players across both rosters are on an SEC program. Surprisingly, not a single one of the five first-team offensive linemen hail from the conference. A big year on the ground from Florida/Torrence could change that.

Kayshon Boutte, Jarrick Bernard-Converse among PFF preseason All-Americans

Boutte made the First Team while Bernard-Converse was an honorable mention.

LSU may not be receiving a ton of hype heading into the first season under head coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag], but it returns an intriguing roster that could be better than many are giving it credit for.

One player whose abilities no one doubts is [autotag]Kayshon Boutte[/autotag], the junior receiver who was off to an incredible start in 2021 before a broken ankle ended his campaign after six games. Boutte is back and, if healthy, is expected to be one of the nation’s top pass-catchers.

Pro Football Focus agrees, naming Boutte as a preseason First Team All-American alongside Ohio State’s Jaxon Smith-Njigba and USC’s Jordan Addison. All three players are seen as likely first-round picks in the 2023 NFL draft.

Boutte is the only LSU player among the First, Second and Third Teams, but one other Tigers player did crack the honorable mention list: cornerback [autotag]Jarrick Bernard-Converse[/autotag], a transfer from Oklahoma State who many expect to be one of the SEC’s top defensive backs after a successful stint with a Cowboys defense that was one of the nation’s best last fall.

An interesting absence is edge rusher [autotag]BJ Ojulari[/autotag], who was named to the preseason All-SEC First Team by the media but doesn’t appear on any of PFF’s lists.

Regardless, LSU has an intriguing veteran core on the roster, and despite all the departures during the offseason, Kelly has done a fantastic job of replenishing the roster. Returning star players like Boutte certainly helps, and he brought in a talented transfer class that features Bernard-Converse and several other likely starters.
