Four Notre Dame players make AP preseason All-American team

With the college football season almost here, the time has come for The Associated Press to unveil its preseason All-Americans. Notre Dame is expected to have another solid season, so it has fair representation on this list. It has four players on the list that are split evenly between the first and second teams. One of them is new to the Irish this year, making him one of seven transfers on this year’s team.

No, the preseason All-American team isn’t remembered or even celebrated nearly as much as the team unveiled at the end of the season. Still, if you’re going to watch college football this year, and you probably are given that you’re reading this story, you want to have some players to watch. They most likely will be the ones that define how 2022 goes, though several might fall all in favor of some surprises.

Here are Notre Dame’s representatives on this year’s preseason team:

All-American Roundup: Two more publications release their preseason selections

Two more preseason All-American teams released with a pair of Tigers making all three major lists.

We finally have all of the major preseason All-American teams released.

Both ESPN and CBS Sports have released their preseason All-American teams with both having the same two LSU Tigers on the first-team. This makes the duo unanimous on three of the major All-American preseason teams with just nine days until kickoff. On defense, Derek Stingley Jr was selected as was kicker Cade York for special teams.

These have been the two players listed on each and every preseason All-American team, including the ones from the major networks. Stingley is expected to return to form as the top cornerback in the country. York is currently No. 5 in LSU history for made field goals, how high could he climb in 2021?

The next member in LSU’s star-studded “DBU” club is Stingley, who returns as one of the most dynamic athletes in college football. The 6-1, 195-pound Stingley has started since his true freshman season and combines lockdown coverage skills with safety-like physicality. His cornerback cohort on the other side, sophomore Eli Ricks, is also supremely talented, which will make it difficult for teams to avoid one side of the field.

LSU doesn’t even have to reach the red zone to have a good chance of scoring points, not with a kicker like York. He enters his junior season having kicked field goals of 50 yards or longer in six of the Tigers’ 10 games a year ago. York has range up to 65 yards and was 9-of-11 from 40 yards or longer in 2020. His school-record 57-yarder in the heavy fog lifted LSU to its biggest win of the season, a 37-34 upset of Florida.

With the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll being released, we look at the preseason All-American team. The No. 13 Tigers saw two representatives on the first team and it should come as a shock to no one. Not a single offensive representative made the team but LSU received one on defense and one on special teams.

What Paul Myerberg Says…

As he heads into his third and likely final season with the Tigers, Stingley already has accumulated enough accolades to rank among the most decorated defensive backs in program history — quite a statement given the Tigers’ track record at cornerback and safety.

Derek Stingley Jr might be the best pound-for-pound NFL draft prospect in 2022. Hoping for a rebound season from the 2019 No. 3 overall recruit in 2021. As a freshman he recorded six interceptions, which is tied for 7th most in a season by a Tiger. Another performance like that 2019 season could put Stingley in the top three in school history behind Chris Williams and Corey Webster.

What Myerberg Says…

York leads the SEC with 39 made field goals during the past two seasons.

Currently, York sits at No. 5 in LSU history for the most made field goals in a career after just two seasons. He could become No. 1 with 22 made field goals in 2021. He is also the third-most accurate kicker in LSU history with an 81.3% conversion rate. Another big year for Cade York could be on the way and potentially taking home the Lou Groza Award for being the nation’s best kicker.

Irish have two stars honored as preseason All-Americans by CBS Sports

One Notre Dame star on the first team, one on the second team while a snub happens and head coach Brian Kelly gets some love as well.

The preseason accolades will be changing significantly with the absence of the Big Ten and Pac-12, but no Notre Dame player who gets nominated will care much about that. Today, 247Sports and CBS Sports, in conjunction announced their 2020 preseason All-American teams.

There was only one Fighting Irish star to make the first team, offensive tackle Liam Eichenberg. The presumed leader of the offensive line should complete his Notre Dame career with plenty of pancakes. He will literally have quarterback Ian Book’s back for the season. Linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah made the second team, but safety Kyle Hamilton was omitted from the list. I think the experts overlooked the rising sophomore star as he was named to the USA Today preseason All-American second team yesterday.

It shouldn’t be ignored that head coach Brian Kelly garnered votes for coach of the year, even if another ACC coach was selected, Clemson’s Dabo Swinney. Notre Dame should be able to navigate through their ACC schedule fairly easily, with the game against the Tigers in South Bend as the contest everyone has circled on their calendars. Kelly last took home coach of the year honors during the 2018 campaign, which he led the Irish to an undefeated regular season and berth into the College Football Playoffs.

These are big honors for Eichenberg and Owusu-Koramoah, as the culmination of their collegiate careers will hopefully be very fruitful. Also, keep an eye out for Kelly and Hamilton, they could potentially be in line for some postseason recognition.
