Packers keeping modified practice schedule for LT David Bakhtiari during training camp

The Packers will keep a modified practice schedule for All-Pro left tackle David Bakhtiari during training camp.

David Bakhtiari is hopeful his knee issues are a thing of the past, but the Green Bay Packers are sticking with a modified practice schedule for the All-Pro left tackle during training camp.

Coach Matt LaFleur confirmed the Packers will give Bakhtiari time off as needed during training camp.

“He’ll definitely be modified, quite a bit,” LaFleur said. “It will be fluid. Just the communication with him, the medical staff, myself, the coaches. We know what type of player he is, he’s proved himself. Any time you have a veteran player with that much experience, then you’re willing to do that. You want the best for David, because when he’s out there and playing, we’re a better football team. It’s going to be fluid.”

LaFleur said the Packers have four practices this week, and he wouldn’t anticipate Bakhtiari doing much of anything during the team’s second practice on Thursday.

Bakhtiari tore his ACL and suffered other knee damage on Dec. 31, 2020, which kicked off a nightmare recovery stretch that featured three different surgeries. He finally returned last season and played in 11 games, but the knee occasionally popped up as a problem.

With a modified practice schedule, the Packers hope to keep stress off the knee and give Bakhtiari the best chance possible of playing in every game in 2023.

Per PFF, Bakhtiari gave up only 10 pressures (zero sacks) over 597 total snaps last season. He allowed one or fewer pressures in nine of 11 games.

If healthy, Bakhtiari could team up with Pro Bowler Elgton Jenkins to give the Packers the best left tackle-left guard combo in football in 2023.

The Packers open training camp with a practice at Ray Nitschke Field on Wednesday.

O.J. Howard on the challenge of playing with short rest on Thursday night

Howard made it clear that the abridged practice schedule presents a unique challenge to teams playing on Thursday nights

Thursday night games are tough, especially for teams that are struggling like the Houston Texans have this season. It takes a significant amount of preparation to put together a cohesive game plan, and with less time to get ready after a game on Sunday, teams are often up against the gun to make the best possible adjustments for the primetime matchup.

Houston is in a particularly tough position this week facing the undefeated Philadelphia Eagles, and are heavy underdogs heading into Thursday’s game. Tight end O.J. Howard commented on the challenge of preparing for the matchup at the Texans’ Monday press conference, telling the media that the abridged practice schedule will be hard to overcome.

“They’re tough because of the quick turnaround,” Howard said to a reporter who asked about the difficulty of Thursday night games. “If you go out there and play a physical game like our defense yesterday, the running back has 32 carries. They’re out there banging for I don’t know how many plays they played, but that’s a lot. Obviously, we had to go out there and run the ball and be physical. Then like you said it’s a quick turnaround. It [Thursday Night Football] probably won’t change. It’s definitely tough for us players, but it’s what we’ve got to deal with right now. It definitely can be really tough.”

Though the outcome of this game is already decided in the eyes of many fans and media members who are aware of the vastly different situations that the Texans and Eagles are in, Philadelphia is in the same position as Houston regarding their amended schedule for preparation this week. The Texans will be a long shot to win no matter what given their status as the AFC’s worst team by record, but in a league where anything can happen on a given week, they might be able to leverage the lack of practice time to their advantage.

Seahawks alter practice schedule to face Jaguars on short week

The Seattle Seahawks tweaked their practice schedule a bit to face the Jacksonville Jaguars on a short week coming off an MNF loss.

The Seattle Seahawks are desperate for a win after having dropped the last three contests on the national stage. This Sunday, they are set to host the Jacksonville Jaguars, who are just 1-5 on the season.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll isn’t counting on an easy battle, however, especially with Seattle coming off a Monday night contest. He’s had to tweak the team’s programming a bit to accommodate the schedule.

We have a short week turnaround, so we altered practice and the approach here a little bit, but it’s a serious week for us to get going and get a win,” Carroll told reporters Wednesday. “Really, it’s about one game and one game only. It always is, but it even seems more clear how the focus is really right. We start into it today, we’re underway, and we look forward to a pretty good return of guys to be healthy, I think. We need to put together a great week to get a win.”

When asked what he meant by “altered practice,” Carroll explained what he could.

“It’s a shortened week so we don’t get the normal rhythm,” he said. “We will do all of the same practice reps and get all of that done, but it’s a little different mode because the recovery time is less for the guys, so we took care of them in that regard.”

The Seahawks and Jaguars are set to kick off Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. PT.

Updated football practice schedule announced by Southeastern Conference

The revised calendar provides student-athletes with more days off and fewer practices than required by the NCAA.

The Southeastern Conference announced on Tuesday its adjusted dates for preseason football activities for its member schools with the first allowable practice now updated to August 17.

The press release includes the following.

The new preseason calendar was developed based on recommendations of the SEC’s Return to Activity and Medical Guidance Task Force.

Last week the SEC announced its intention to begin the 2020 season on September 26 as it continues to monitor developments around COVID-19. The original start date of September 5 would have allowed for preseason football practice to begin August 7.

In the revised SEC preseason football calendar, from August 7-16 schools are permitted to conduct up to 14 hours per week of strength and conditioning, meetings and walkthroughs.

Beginning August 17 and until the opening game, schools are allowed 25 practices with a limit of 20 hours per week of practice time. A five-day acclimatization period is required, with two days in helmets only, two days in shells and the fifth day in full pads.

Schools will be required to provide student-athletes a minimum of two days off each week until the week before the first game of the season.
