Kelvin Joseph among Cowboys back at practice, Elliott limited, Dan Quinn straps on helmet for drills

Kelvin Joseph, Donovan Wilson, and Sean McKeon were back. Trevon Diggs sat out; Elliott was limited. And Dan Quinn wore a helmet for drills. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Cowboys executive vice president said earlier in the week that none of the team’s injured reserve players would be likely to play in Week 6 versus New England. But that doesn’t mean the clock hasn’t started on the return to action for some of them.

Rookie cornerback Kelvin Joseph and tight end Sean McKeon were set to participate in the individual portion of practice on Wednesday, head coach Mike McCarthy said in the morning’s press conference. With the designation to return placed on the two players, the Cowboys can activate either within the next 21 days. It sounds, though, as if the coaching staff will take a slow and easy approach, bringing them back more fully after the Week 7 bye.

Safety Donovan Wilson also practiced once again in a limited fashion, his first action after missing four straight games with a groin injury.

In other news from Wednesday’s session, cornerback Trevon Diggs (ankle) did not practice, nor did safety Damontae Kazee (hip). Defensive end Dorance Armstrong remained sidelined as well with an ankle injury.

Running back Ezekiel Elliott was limited, still sore from the blow he took to his lower back and ribs when he landed on a sideline pylon during Sunday’s win over the Giants. He fully expects to be ready for this week’s game in Foxborough.

Wednesday’s practice was held inside The Star at Frisco due to inclement weather in the Dallas area.

The most unusual development from the day’s drills, though, was defensive coordinator Dan Quinn pulling on a helmet to do some one-on-one (and head-to-head) instructional work with his unit.

According to Jon Machota from The Athletic, the “Cowboys are expecting more cut blocks this week, so Quinn was putting more emphasis on that in practice.”

He added this observation from linebacker Micah Parsons: “That’s the type of hands-on coach he is. My man put a helmet on and started diving at knees.”

Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott sits out Wednesday practice with knee discomfort

Neither Elliott nor Amari Cooper practiced Wednesday; both are expected to be ready to start Sunday against the Giants. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Two of the Cowboys’ biggest playmakers sat out Wednesday’s practice due to injury, four days before the division rival Giants come to town.

Running back Ezekiel Elliott did not practice because of knee discomfort. Wide receiver Amari Cooper was also a non-participant thanks to a hamstring pull he suffered during Sunday’s game against Carolina.

Both are expected to be ready to start in Week 5 versus New York; Elliott says he’ll be ready to practice again on Thursday.

“To be honest with you, I feel three times better than I did Monday,” Elliott said per the team website.

Edge rusher Dorance Armstrong remains sidelined with an ankle injury, and safety Donovan Wilson is still nursing a groin. Defensive end Randy Gregory (knee), defensive tackle Carlos Watkins (knee), and tackle Ty Nsekhe (illness) were limited participants in the Wednesday session.

Cornerback Trevon Diggs, who took a cleat to the back on Sunday and sat out the fourth quarter of the Cowboys’ 36-28 win, practiced fully and will look to continue his impressive streak of intercepting a pass in every game so far this season. He currently leads the league with five.

Practice report: Collins, Prescott, Goodwin, Wilson among Cowboys’ full participants

Dallas saw several key players participate fully in what coach Mike McCarthy dubbed the team’s “heaviest workload” before the season opener. | From @ToddBrock24f7

“Today is huge for us,” said Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy on Monday morning, in advance of the day’s practice session. With Dallas slated to kick off the 2021 season Thursday night, McCarthy and the team are several days ahead of their typical weekly workflow. That made the Labor Day practice a significant one, especially following the news that All-Pro right guard Zack Martin had tested positive for COVID over the weekend and would almost assuredly miss the season opener versus the Buccaneers.

But Monday’s practice- which McCarthy referred to as “our heaviest workload of the whole preparation” for Thursday’s game in Tampa- brought huge news indeed for several Cowboys players who are making their way back to game readiness.

Offensive tackle La’el Collins was a full participant on the day, as were quarterback Dak Prescott, cornerback C.J. Goodwin, edge rusher DeMarcus Lawrence, and safety Donovan Wilson.

Defensive end Chauncey Golston was at first listed as a full participant; the club later released a correction reclassifying the Iowa product as “limited.” Offensive lineman Ty Nsekhe was also limited in the day’s work.

Collins missed all of last season with hip issues and then was forced out of two separate practices in recent weeks with a neck stinger. His return to form will help an offensive line that will have its hands full Thursday, minus their best player and going against the defending Super Bowl champs, who just activated Ndamukong Suh off their Reserve/COVID list.

Wilson was pulled from practice on August 25th with a groin injury, and will be important to a defensive back rotation aiming to shut down Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Tom Brady’s cast of lethal pass-catchers.

Prescott, of course, is coming off last season’s horrific ankle injury and a muscle strain in his throwing shoulder that kept him out of preseason action entirely and limited for much of camp. It is no understatement to suggest that, as Prescott goes, so go the Cowboys.

Recovery from back surgery caused Lawrence to miss all of the team’s spring work and most of training camp. He was on the PUP list until August 3rd. He, too, was held out of preseason games and is eager to return to live action.

Special teams ace Goodwin missed four weeks with a bad hamstring and returned to practice just last Thursday.

Golston remains a mystery to anyone not inside the Cowboys’ facility. The rookie was selected in the third round of the draft, but started training camp on the PUP list with a hamstring malady.

Nsekhe has been bothered by a foot issue. His availability in Tampa will be important, given the focus on the offensive line and questions about whether the starters will be able to remain healthy.

Practice Report: Taylor Heinicke takes 1st-team reps; Terry McLaurin, Antonio Gibson work on side-field

It was Taylor Heinicke who got the first-team reps in Washington on Wednesday, but that’s no reason to sound the alarm bells for Alex Smith.

It was backup QB Taylor Heinicke who was taking the first-team reps in Washington’s practice on Wednesday, while Alex Smith was off to the side with a stocking cap on and not participating in team drills. This may not be ideal, but it is not a reason to sound the alarm bells, as it goes along with what we saw from Washington last week when Smith did end up starting.

Earlier in the week, coach Ron Rivera stated that there was a possibility that he would rotate both quarterbacks in the game, so it makes complete sense to give Heinicke a lot of practice time so he can feel more comfortable. We know that with Smith being a veteran, and also based on comments from Rivera in the past, there is complete comfort that he could play on the weekend even without getting reps in practice leading up to the game. We will learn more about Smith’s availability for Saturday’s game later in the week, but at this point, there is nothing out of the ordinary.

Elsewhere on the practice field, both WR Terry McLaurin and RB Antonio Gibson were present, though they remained off to the side working with trainers. McLaurin was seen doing some hurdling drills, which sounds positive when you consider the high-ankle sprain he has been dealing with, and Gibson looked good in action last week against the Eagles. At this point, there is little reason anyone should doubt their availability this weekend against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
