Oregon vs. Portland State: ‘Tale of the Tape’ for No. 15 Ducks vs. Vikings

A deep dive into the numbers for No. 15 Oregon vs. Portland State. TLDR: It could be a long Saturday for the Vikings.

Members of the Oregon Ducks are looking forward to hitting someone not wearing green and yellow this weekend, and fans of the Oregon Ducks are looking forward to watching some football.

Media members who cover the Oregon Ducks are just happy that we will have something other than finite periods of practice to analyze for a change.

That starts right now by looking ahead to Saturday’s game against the Portland State Vikings. While it’s a lopsided affair that the Ducks are projected to win by a large margin, we still can take a deeper dive into the matchup and see where the biggest strengths and weaknesses are that either team might be able to exploit.

I am happy to bring our ‘Tale of the Tape’ series out of storage and knock the dust off. So when you look at the tape and get into the numbers, which team is expected to have an advantage? Let’s take a look, using numbers from last season to project ahead.

Dan Lanning gives final thoughts on season opener vs. Portland State

Dan Lanning gives final thoughts on season opener vs. Portland State

We’ve talked to Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning a lot over the past month. Starting with the annual media day at the end of July, we’ve had a chance to chat with Lanning once or twice a week throughout the month of August while fall camp rolled through, getting updates on young players, returning players, and the process of schematic implementation over time.

To be completely honest, we’re running out of things to talk about.

Fortunately for all of us, meaningful football is around the corner. The Ducks kick off their 2023 season on Saturday afternoon by hosting the Portland State Vikings at noon in Autzen Stadium. The team is ready to hit someone not wearing green and yellow, and we all are ready to watch some football that actually matters.

On Wednesday, Lanning gave his final press conference of the week, giving one last update on the injury report and looking ahead to the weekend. Here are some of the most notable quotes from that interview:

Series History: How Oregon has fared against Portland State over the years

This weekend will be the 6th time Oregon has played Portland State. The previous five matchups went about as you would expect.

This Saturday, the Oregon Ducks will open their football season with a game against the Portland State Vikings, the first of their three non-conference games this season. This will be the Ducks’ sixth matchup against the Vikings, and their first since 2018.

In that 2018 matchup, Oregon won handily — much like they are expected to on Saturday. The final score of that game was 62-14 in favor of a Ducks team led by QB Justin Herbert — who threw for 4 TDs, 250 yards, and completed 20 of his 26 passes.

Oregon’s 2018 victory was their fifth victory against Portland State in as many games. The first time these two schools faced off was on September 3rd, 1994 and the Ducks won 58-16. That season, the Ducks finished 11th in the AP Poll after a 9-3 regular season record and a loss to Penn State in the Rose Bowl.

Obviously, anything but a decisive win for Oregon in this game would be a shock. However, that doesn’t mean this game shouldn’t hold weight for Oregon fans, players, and coaches. No matter how much better the Ducks are than the Vikings, the action the Ducks will experience in this game will be more intense than the offseason, and will help them prepare for Texas Tech and the rest of the season.

It’s the season opener. It’ll be exciting. Even if Oregon wins by 70.

Dan Lanning previews Portland State, talks injuries ahead of Week 1

Dan Lanning previews Portland State, talks injuries ahead of Week 1

It has been an incredibly long offseason for the Oregon Ducks.

243 days, to be exact.

That’s how long it has been since Dan Lanning wrapped up his first season as the head coach in Eugene with a victory over the North Carolina Tar Heels in the Holiday Bowl.

Since then, there have been departures, arrivals, and a whole lot of hype built for the Ducks. Now, at long last, we have entered game week in Eugene, and just mere days from now the stands at Autzen Stadium will be filled with green and yellow, and meaningful football will be played.

In attempts to preview that upcoming matchup against the Portland State Vikings on Saturday afternoon, Lanning met with media members for his weekly press conference on Monday night. He touched on the biggest challenges that the Vikings will face, what the Ducks can do to find success in Week 1, and gave an outlook on some injuries going forward.

Here are some of the best quotes from Lanning on Monday:

Injury Report: Updated news for Oregon Ducks ahead of game vs Portland State

It’s refreshing to see the Oregon Ducks injury report be short as the 2023 season opener with Portland State is coming up on Saturday.

As expected, the injury report is short this week as the Oregon Ducks football team prepares for its season opener on Saturday against Portland State.

The injury report was quite extensive last season, even before the season began, so it’s refreshing news to know the Ducks are fairly healthy as the 2023 year approaches.

Obviously, that’s bound to change as the season goes along, but hopefully Oregon can stay as healthy as humanly possible in 2023 in order to see their true potential.

It’s also important that the injury bug stay away in a game with the Vikings, a team the Ducks are expected to handle with ease.

Dan Lanning, Bo Nix give early thoughts on Portland State matchup

It’s not yet game week, but the Ducks are starting to think about the season opener with Portland State.

The Oregon Ducks football team officially starts to prepare for its season opener after an off-season that has seemed to last longer than usual.

It’s not quite game week yet, but the Ducks are thinking about that season-opening game against Portland State. The Vikings are quite the contrast compared to last season’s opening opponent, the defending national champion Georgia Bulldogs. The contest will be in Autzen, not Atlanta, and the Ducks will be overwhelming favorites.

Oregon head coach Dan Lanning said that Oregon will not overlook its FCS opponent from the northern part of the state.

“One thing, when you play Game 1’s, who are you going to see, who are they going to be? Each team is different, especially in college football now, from the last year to the next year,” he said. “I will say this, I have a lot of respect for their coach and their coaching staff. They’ve been there for a long time. They have some continuity there. There’s been some moving parts, but they do a good job, and they do have some explosive players on their team.”

Quarterback Bo Nix was asked about what success looks like when you play an opponent that you are expected to not only defeat but to defeat by a lot. Nix is already starting to sound like a coach.

“Run the ball to win, have some explosive plays, win situational football, don’t beat ourselves, don’t have any penalties, don’t turn the ball over, just do what we’re supposed to do and it will be a fun day,” Nix said. “We’ll put ourselves in a great position. We’ll be in good shape and go into Week 2 having some confidence and building off Week 1. We’re going to each week as a very important game and we just want to win.”

The Week 2 matchup will be a sneaky tough one as the Ducks will go down to Lubbock, Texas and face the Red Raiders of Texas Tech. The more confidence the Ducks have coming into that road game, the better.

Portland State coach picks up $14K beer tab after delivering on promise

Portland State coach Bruce Barnum said he would buy a beer for fans and he delivered

Portland State football coach Bruce Barnum is a man of his word. Recruits should recognize this when deciding whether to play for him.

Last week the coach went on a radio show in Oregon and said he would buy a beer for everyone who came out to the team’s game against Western Oregon last Saturday.

On Tuesday, Barnum posted the tab from Barny’s Beer Garden after the Vikings’ 21-17 victory.

It was a hefty one, to say the least.

The tune was 1,260 Coors Lights and 786 Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA.

The bill squeezed nearly $15,000 — $14,448 to be precise — out of the coach’s wallet.

A toast to Coach Barnum for making good on his boast.
