“Before the game at Madison Square Garden, two gentlemen from the NBA begged me to take the shoes off,” said Kanter. “I was confused. I was getting ready for my citizenship test and I knew that the First Amendment is freedom of speech. Them telling me to take my shoes off went against my First Amendment rights. I said I would not take them off. I didn’t care if I got banned or fined. During halftime I received a text message from my manager: All the Celtics games were suddenly banned in China. It took one half of a Celtics game, with me wearing these shoes, on the bench, for the games to get banned.”

More on this storyline

“They asked me if I would wear those shoes again and I promised not to — but I wore ‘Free Uyghur,’” he said, referring to the minority Muslim ethnic group that has reportedly suffered human rights abuses in China. “The National Basketball Players Association called me and harassed me. I told them to stop calling and texting me.” -via New York Post / December 8, 2021
“Two years ago, I tweeted that Hong Kong should be free.” Then “Le Bron said he is not educated enough about the situation [to comment on it] and that what I tweeted hurt the league. It’s sad that these players are social justice warriors, but, when it comes to China, they are scared to say anything. [Professional wrestler] John Cena and other celebrities, they are so worried about the business side of it. I tell people to stand up for what’s right. Your values are more important than any money you can ever make from China.” -via New York Post / December 8, 2021

WATCH: Enes Freedom getting flak for ‘Tucker Carlson’ appearance on ‘Young Turks’ show

This likely isn’t the sort of awareness he was hoping to bring to his cause.

New citizen of the United States of America Enes Kanter Freedom is finding himself the subject of quite a few recent publications about his activism for human rights, but it may not be the sort of attention he was hoping for.

While his causes are widely supported as he does his best to champion human rights causes in his ancestral Turkey, around the world, and in China in particular, a recent appearance on the controversial Fox television “Tucker Carlson Show” and the comments he made on it are dominating the coverage the outspoken Celtics center has been getting in recent days.

And while his comments taken out of context are undoubtedly worse than otherwise, it seems that Freedom now finds himself at the center of a minor political kerfuffle that is not doing much to further his ostensible goals.

One such example is a recent episode captured on the video embedded above that features Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian reflecting on the Boston big man’s recent activism in the public sphere.

Twitter reacts to Enes Kanter Freedom saying Americans should ‘keep their mouth shut’ and not criticize their government

Enes Kanter Freedom is getting a robust response to his words on Fox’s Tucker Carlson show.

Enes Kanter Freedom is so happy to have gotten the security that comes with the freedom his brand-new US citizenship provides that he literally changed his last name to “Freedom” on getting said citizenship this past Monday.

The Boston Celtics center, an outspoken defender of human rights abroad, went on another television show soon after getting his citizenship and spoke about his beliefs in ways which he might not be able to do in his native Turkey. But his choice of venue and words both might be in the midst of teaching Freedom an important lesson about freedom — let us explain.

Freedom appeared on Fox’s “Tucker Carlson Show” to talk about his freedom, a show — and network — which has had some controversial stances on issues Freedom himself has used his freedom to speak up and even protest about.

Enes Kanter received a death threat

The Boston Celtics player and activist Enes Kanter told CNBC’s Eamon Javer he got a death threat after the Celtics game this weekend, and that the FBI once gave him a “panic button” to summon help in an emergency. But he said none of the blowback he’s received will keep him from standing up for human rights in China and around the world. And he blasted some American companies, including powerful NBA sponsor Nike for what he sees as a double standard on human rights.
