Pokemon Scarlet and Violet patch addresses some of the RPGs’ bugs

The first Pokemon Scarlet and Violet patch aims to squash some of the games’ peskier bugs, but many still remain

Nintendo announced the first Pokemon Scarlet and Violet patch is incoming, a meaty 1 GB patch set to release sometime on Dec. 1, 2022, and fix some of the monster-catching RPG’s many problems. The Redmond-based company announced the update on Twitter and reassured fans there and in the accompanying blog post that they were taking feedback and not ignoring the games’ issues.

“Our goal is always to give players a positive experience with our games, and we apologize for the inconvenience, Nintendo said. “We take the feedback from players seriously and are working on improvements to the games.”

Chief among the updates this first patch addresses is a bug that causes the battle theme during the Elite Four challenges to loop after just a few seconds. Other “select” bugs will be addressed too, though Nintendo didn’t say which ones.

Presumably, more patches are planned that will hopefully fix issues such as frequently clipping through objects, items and Pokemon flat-out disappearing, and the environment failing to load in multiple places. However, aside from promises to take feedback seriously, Nintendo didn’t say whether another patch is in the works.

Despite multiple reviews noting these problems, the Switch games sold over 10 million copies in their first weekend, making them Nintendo’s fastest-selling games ever.

Some Pokemon fans say Fuecoco breaks Scarlet and Violet Nuzlocke runs

Fuecoco is just too good for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Nuzlocke runs, fans say, as the starter demolishes the toughest competition

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Nuzlocke runs are just too easy, some fans say, at least if you pick Fuecoco as your Gen 9 starter. Nuzlocke runs involve a set of self-imposed rules to make Pokemon games more challenging. These vary depending on the player, but the main rule usually stipulates that any Pokemon who gets knocked out in battle can’t be used again for the entire game.

The goofy little critter might seem like an unassuming Fire starter, but their dual typing means that, after reaching their final evolved form, they can handle most of Paldea’s Gyms and even the Elite Four – the games’ ultimate challenge – with ease.

Fuecoco is naturally strong against the first two Gym Leaders, who use Bug and Grass types, respectively. They can also learn Ground-type moves to help against the third Gym, make short work of the Ice-type Gym, and after gaining the Ghost dual type, can also hold their own against the Psychic type challenges as well.

Add to this list of strengths the ability to recover their health and boost their attack, and you’ve got one of the strongest starting Pokemon in years. That may be fun for some fans, but most Nuzlocke players want a steeper challenge. Some players recommended the Nuzlocke community ban Fueicoco entirely, though since this is all unofficial – unlike the competitive scene, which has already officially banned Houndstone, the Ghost dog – players are free to fudge the rules and use their lil’ fire croc if they want.

Others pointed out that Nintendo quietly added what many fans have asked for since Black 2 and White 2: the return of difficulty levels. Scarlet and Violet’s challenge level changes significantly if you pick Sprigatito, for example, whose typing pushes you to build a completely different kind of team to overcome the game’s challenges.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet: The 10 best new Pokémon

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet added 103 new Pokémon, so it was a tall task to pick out the very best.

There are plenty of things to love about Pokémon, but the chances are what first drew you into the series are the Pokémon themselves. The new roster is always the most exciting part of a new game, and with Scarlet and Violet adding 103 of the critters – the most new additions since Generations 5 – there is a lot to choose from.

We’ve completed our Pokédex and have had time to get to know all of the new Pokémon well enough to pick out our favorites. We’ve already chosen the worst new Pokémon if you’d rather see the bottom of the barrel, but right now we’re spreading positivity and talking about the ones that bring us joy.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet: The 10 worst new Pokemon

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have added 103 new Pokémon, but they can’t all be winners. We’ve picked out the very worst.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet added 103 new Pokémon to catch, the most since Pokémon Black and White released all the way back in 2010, and that’s not even counting the admittedly small amount of Paldean forms. On the whole, the new cohort of Pokémon has been pretty great, but not every Pokémon can be a winner. In every generation, there are a few new Pokémon that really just don’t hit the mark, so we’ve gone through all of Generation 9’s new creatures to pick out the worst of what’s on offer.

If you’d prefer a more positive look at Paldea, then check out our list of the best new Pokémon instead.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet broke sales records in three days

The new Pokemon games outsold practically every other Nintendo game since the Switch launched

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet sales have shattered Nintendo’s previous record, the Redmond-based software developer announced in a press release, with the monster-catching RPGs selling over 10 million units in their first weekend. Nintendo said that makes the duo their fastest-selling games of all time, at least within the three-day time period.

Unlike most sales figures, these numbers actually include boxed sales and digital downloads. For reference, Nintendo announced earlier in 2022 that Pokemon Sword and Shield, the series’ previous installments, have sold 22 million in three years, and Pokemon Legends: Arceus, a spinoff that released in January 2022, sold 12 million in four months and 6 million in its first week.

Scarlet and Violet’s record-breaking sales come in spite of the games’ rather problematic performance issues, which were serious enough to prompt the technical analysis group Digital Foundry to call them a “comprehensive technical failure.” These range from cameras and characters clipping through objects to the game struggling to load assets when there’s too much movement.

What Nintendo plans for the games’ future, including whether Game Freak and The Pokemon Company will issue a patch that improves their performance, remains uncertain. Rather than publish a revised version of the previous games, Sword and Shield, as has been standard in the series’ past, Game Freak instead created two DLC expansions that added new areas and mechanics.
